The Newlywed 10… Wait, Umm… 15

July 8th, 2009 @ 6:12 pm by Mrs. Avocado

In 17 days, my little sister and I will be switching roles from the ones we had last October. I’ll be the MOH and she’ll be the bride! LDS girls tend to have short engagements (mine was quite long at 7 months), and she’s pulling this thing together in just over two months.

avo

I’m so happy for her, and I’m very excited to be wearing the black dress and new nude heels seen below (please try to pretend I’m wearing makeup and did my hair), but I’ve been feeling a little soft around the edges lately after gaining a total of 15 LBS since my wedding day in October.

http://www.weddingbee.com/

I worked hard to look and feel confident on my wedding day, and I swore that I wouldn’t let myself slide back into bad habits once the honeymoon was over. Unfortunately, the call of our new KitchenAid mixer and the row of pretty new cookbooks were too much for me to handle and I started baking and cooking with a focus on taste, not on health. I made my first chocolate cake, used Phyllo dough for the first time, and went through multiple sticks of butter. And, worst of all, I started dishing out equal portions for both of us. He would eat half the pizza, and I would eat the other half.

Mr. Avocado has been supportive and wonderful, both telling me he loves the way I look, and encouraging me in my efforts to lose weight when I ask him for help. I lost about 50 lbs a few years ago by tracking my calories using Fitday (I use the desktop version) and decided to start weighing and measuring my meals once again, but Suavacado suggested adding a second element to my routine to help with the fitness and activity side of things. I would start tracking both my calories in, and my calories out in a very controlled manner.

You may have seen this black armband on The Biggest Loser contestants before. It’s called the Bodybugg, and it tracks calorie output. It measures how fast your body is moving, the amount of heat your body is giving off, the electrical conductivity of your skin, and skin temperature. Yeah, I have no idea what that means, but it’s supposed to be really accurate!

1

It’s not the most fashionable thing I’ve ever worn, so I try to convince myself I look really tough and cool whenever I wear it. :)

2

I also bought a digital display, which gives me the chance to see how I’m doing in real time. 2291 calories burned is still not quite what I need to lose weight as fast as I would like, but that’s actually a really good number for me. Yesterday I burned a pitiful 1747, and only walked 1901 steps. I don’t have to wonder why I’m gaining weight anymore, I’m realizing that I’m very, very inactive!

3

I’m grateful that my Mr. Avo was willing to splurge on this for me, because it has made a huge difference in my motivation to be active. I’m getting a lot more workouts in than I normally do because I want to see my number of calories burned be as high as possible.

That being said, in the end it’s just a fancy “toy” that tells me I need to get up and start moving around a lot more. Something I actually already knew! This was definitely a pricey investment for us, and knowing how much money we put into it makes me want to use it as much as possible (similar to the way entering into a contract with a personal trainer makes you workout more often). If you can budget the money for it, I think it’s a great investment (as long as you don’t mind wearing the big black band on your arm all the time!).

But if you can’t afford it, I think that’s okay, too. The overall message for me was to get outside and get moving, and I’ve started doing that, even in this unbearable Dallas heat. If you’re trying to lose like I am, I believe you can do it!

What kind of activities do you participate in to get yourself moving during the heat of the summer?

That looks like a great way to count calories! I love to cycle in the summer, and enjoy the cool breeze as I speed along. However, this summer has been so rainy I’ve gotten less than 100 miles in. I also participate in Tae Kwon Do all year round. That’s a motivator for two reasons: (1) I pay $85 a month, and (2), if I don’t show up, people ask me where I’ve been! It’s been great as a way to tone up though! Good luck with staying active this summer.

Avo, I was just looking on your blog and thinking how thin you looked! (date night post) I think it is great that you are working toward being more healthy though- I haven’t unpacked the KitchenAid mixer yet due to lack of space, but it is calling to me!!!

Have you seen the infomercials for P90X? My fiance bought it in February, and we did the 90 day program together. The results are fab, I am in the best shape of my life!

Yeah…. I gained 5 lbs on our honeymoon alone. And I agree that it’s the portions - I really shouldn’t eat as much as my husband! Plus, now it feels like we need to have a “real” dinner every night, instead of just a bowl of cereal or salad if I’m not hungry.

It’s great that Mr. A is being supportive. My husband and I exercise together, and it makes all the difference to have a spouse who loves you for who you are but also encourages you to be healthy.

You look awesome, though! The dress is smashing on you. And congrats to your sister!!

Love your bolero!

P.S. I’m a big fan of Wii Fit for staying active in the summer without having the brave the outdoors and the heat.

I think its so cool that your weddings are so close together. My sister and I are almost exactly a year apart. I think its awesome going through everything together.

I need to get motivated for her fall wedding, so if you have any other good tips, please share! :0)

I get up early to exercise because I know I won’t do it after work or in the evenings. I’m always too tired and hungry then. It’s hard to wake up early at first, but then you totally get used to it and feel better throughout the day.

Good luck! You can do it!

No matter the temp, I make myself go out for walks at lunch — it helps me clear my head and relax even when I’m really stressed…and is great exercise as well!

Thanks for this, Avo. I’m still on my honeymoon (Mr. Bunny is asleep beside me!), but I’ve already had to remind myself multiple times that he is a man and it’s NOT OK for me to be eating the same amount he does.

I just looked up the BodyBugg and it’s about $250 online.

I force myself to use my lunch break to take a walk. Around the building, around the office, whatever. For 30 minutes, I do nothing work or wedding related and just walk. It helps get my heart rate up a little for an afternoon of sitting, and helps clear my mind. I don’t mind the heat, and I love getting a good sweat on, so working out in the summer is great to me.

Mrs. Avocado, you are not alone! I’ve gained 10 pounds since my own October wedding. I’ve lost most of my interest in tracking points on weight watchers and eat whatever I want to at restaurants.

i know quite a few people that have gained considerable more weight than 15 lbs (i’m talking 30-40). My fiance and I joined a gym immediately after getting home from the honeymoon, and my first big grocery shopping trip was to an organic produce market.

I’m going to try to be reasonable, but our budget is going to force me to be pretty creative in this fitness/healthy eating department!
