Wedding Traditions: Something Blue

July 8th, 2009 @ 11:05 am by Mrs. Joey

I’ve already shared my something old and my something borrowed, so now it’s time for my something blue.

My something blue is the garter FMIL Joey wore at her wedding. Her Aunt made it for her. It’s very simple and very light blue.

We weren’t sure we were going to do a garter toss, but when FMIL gave me the blue garter, I knew we had to. She wasn’t making us, or anything. I knew we had to because it was the only heirloom or tradition we had from Mr. Joey’s family, and I really wanted to incorporate it into the wedding.

The garter needs a little work.

The elastic needs replacing. Mr. Joey and I were talking and we thought it would be fun to make the garter our own. We want to add a little something to it. We were thinking of either stitching our wedding date onto it or adding a flower to it. Then, the next person who wears it can add their own history to it.

Are you adding anything to any wedding heirlooms you hope to pass along?

I love the idea of each person adding to the garter. Maybe a charm that “says” something about you and Mr. Joey?

so I assume you’ll actually be tossing a different garter then right? Why would you want to toss one with such family history?

Oh, and Andie has a good point. You might want to make a different toss garter, or else make sure the guys know that if they catch this garter, they have to return it to one of your relatives before they leave.

That’s really cool! I don’t have any wedding heirlooms as of yet. But I think it’s a great idea to make it your own.

I love the idea of adding to it and making it your own and then passing it on. Great way to continue the tradition :)

If you add you wedding date, you should think about added the date from the first wedding too. The garter would then spot light every wedding date it has been a part of.

That’s kind of what we did! My mom made her own garter for her wedding, with my parents monogram on it. Then, my sister used it at hers and stitched their monogram on it. I’m making my mom stitch monogram, but I’m wearing it at my wedding as well.
**Andie - we bought a wal-mart garter for the toss, and used the heirloom more for pictures and wearing during the ceremony!

I love the charm idea too! We didn’t have any heirlooms. Both of our sets of parents had small weddings and our moms weren’t really into the whole wedding thing. Hopefully I can think of something to pass down to our kids!
