About Mrs. Penguin

Yesterday we tweeted an open call for new bee applications, so I thought we could take a few minutes and share a bit of what we look for in bees! We receive anywhere between 20-40 applications a month, and usually accept 2 new bees per month, so we read a lot of applications!

Great style - No matter your budget, we look for people that are able to work within their means to create gorgeous, inspiring, and cohesive weddings. Being able to take aspects of your wedding day and making them uniquely your own is something that is really key to being a bee!

Willingness to share - Bees not only have the unique ability to hunt down the best and freshest ideas, tips, and sales, but they’re also awesome at sharing them with the hive! From how-tos, to great sales, to negotiation methods, bees are all about making the inaccessible accessible!

Emotional openness - We’ve noticed that people that are really willing to share not just the aesthetics of their weddings, but also the emotion involved in wedding planning are received really well by the hive. Bees are not just pretty faces; they are real people with real emotions, triumphs, and tribulations, and they are all willing to share their stories publicly.

Unique perspective - $1K wedding? Platinum wedding? Courthouse wedding? 2nd wedding? Same sex? Older brides? Interfaith? Younger brides? Planning from afar? We’re open to everyone. Bees aren’t cookie cutter, and part of the success of the hive lies in the fact that all the bees provide different and unique perspectives in their wedding planning.

A passion for blogging - Sometimes we receive interesting applications, but notice that the blogger has written 20 entries over the last 6 months or so. Bees update their blogs at least 3 times a week with meaningful content, and it’s important that each bee maintains a weekly presence on the blog! If you’re considering applying, try blogging 3+ times a week for several weeks, and see if that’s something that you’d be willing to do throughout your wedding planning process. Blogging takes passion and commitment!

A strong and memorable voice - Personality is key! I’ve personally met several bees in real life over the past couple years, and it’s so great to see how their personalities translate to their blogging voice. Whether they be bold and boisterous, to shy and sweet, a great blogger is able to inject their real personality into their writing.

There is definitely no magic formula to becoming a bee, and obviously, applicants don’t have to strike all these points! Different bees embody different aspects of the list. What’s most important is that you be you, be open, and blog frequently! And, if you apply and aren’t accepted—keep trying! Because we have so few slots, sometimes we can’t even accept bloggers we really like, but as weeks pass, slots open up again, and we always reevaluate applications that are resubmitted! Just don’t give up on blogging… blog often between your first go ’round and your second (or third!). We definitely notice if you haven’t updated much between submissions.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a bee, check out our application and submit it today! We’ve got so many cute characters for you to choose from!

characters-remaining

So many bees have been recently married, and we’re looking for a few new bees today! We’re currently accepting applications for brides (and grooms!) that are getting married between now and March 2010.

I’ve noticed as of late that a lot of the new Bees are getting married within 4-5 months of being a Bee even though the cut off is 9months prior to your wedding. I’m a little bummed at this so I wonder if maybe there are not enough applicants or applications are unable to be reviewed quickly enough due to staffing? Or it’s just been the nature of the applicants lately? I kinda feel like with 4 months left so many of the decisions have been made already so it’s more like I’m getting a recap rather than a live blog. If that makes any sense??
Just purely my observation and perhaps it’s wrong! =)

I’ve still got 5 more months till I can even think of applying…!!!

I am on pins and needles waiting to hear a response (I love that Miss Sunbeam). No matter what WeddingBee is one of my “most visited” sites (according to FireFox) so I will still be here till after the wedding, I am sure!

@Gerbera: I may be wrong, but I think it was just the people applying at that moment in their planning. I was picked fairly quickly after applying and I applied right at the 8 month mark. I did notice the same thing though (Bunny, Yorkie, etc.). It’s still fun reading their blogs and having a quick wedding to look forward to.

Penguin, thanks for the run-down. I know I do not have the time to commit to blogging, but I have wondered what the requirements, minimums, maximums, etc were for your bees. I must say, you all do a fantastic job of picking Bees :)

You should include the “willingness to recap in a timely fashion” in what you’re looking for. So many of the brides blog like crazy in the weeks leading up to the wedding, but then when it’s over and the hectic planning process is complete, they disappear! I’m not asking for a day-after-review, but come on. I know a lot of the brides say they’re waiting for professional pictures, but don’t tell me there weren’t at least 20 digital cameras capturing every moment. Don’t get me wrong, I love WB!! But, I’m always disappointed when my fave bloggers finally get married and vanish from the boards. The wedding day pictures are the most important part, after following you and your DIY projects, invitations, flowers… I want to see is how it all came together in the end.

I have a random question… we’re get married at cityhall but then having a family wedding (and they think we’ll be getting married there, they don’t know about the legal wedding months before), if I were to apply, which wedding would I need to be applying for?

Our big family wedding is months apart too…

@ruby39: I love instant gratification, too :) The bees try their best, and they’re volunteers, so we try not to “require” anything of the bees, as they are so gracious to share their weddings with us!

Don’t know about other bees, but I really wanted to wait and recap with my pro pics, not just with guest pics, and the pics took many months to make their way into our hands! Recaps are very emotional to write, and sometimes it’s hard to get thoughts all down in writing.

This is kind of random, but how often do you come out with new icons? When you get down to a certan number does a new generation come out? Just curious! :)

The current ones are so cute, I’m partial to the Husky. I have one that looks pretty similar.

@ruby39: I agree with Penguin that I really wanted to wait to have all of my pro pics in order to recap the wedding — no matter how many pics our guests took, snapshots didn’t do the details justice! :-) It took us 5 months to get all of our images on disc from our photographers (we got married at the height of wedding season, so it took a while!), and it is a REALLY huge task doing recaps. If you had asked me before the wedding, I would have said I’d have all my recaps done within a month of getting our pro photos!… but in reality, there is a LOT to catch up on in life after the wedding (and a new hubby to spend time with), and it’s easy to lose momentum with recaps when each one takes several hours to organize and write.

Just a little insight into our world :-) I agree that fast recaps are amazing! But sometimes it’s hard to make that promise when you don’t know how many pictures you’ll get or how you’ll want to tell your story to the readers :-)

I can’t wait for my turn to apply. It is the reason I started blogging and now am obsessed with it. It really has helped me in so many ways. Even if I don’t become a bee. Blogging about this wedding helped me be okay with being girl and dreaming of a wedding! Thanks ladies!

I’m so glad your posting a more detailed profile of what a bee should be, so we can try to work on our blogs ;)

Today we got the Email we were waiting for 133 days and we can finally set a date (Visa petition approved yay!) So now I’m officially on time.

I’m still new at blogging and trying to do the best I can (I started as a way to get better on English, and share my process with FI’s family and my closest friends) but I don’t know if I am “good enough” to be a BEE. I’m way better at writting on Spanish lol.

Now that I’m so addicted to WB I wish so bad I could get pick!!

As far as Bees who are close to their weddings go, I know it just took me a long while to get the nerve up to apply! Now I wish I had just done it sooner and could have been sharing more decisions throughout the whole 8 months! Oh well :)

I just started my wedding blog for this! I was updating a planning site but would LOVE to be a bee! I have kept a pug blog for over a year now (CLEARLY shooting for Miss Pug!) and after I get the required # of entries, I’ll be applying! I’m a March 2010 girl so I just meet the deadline! We have an underlying pug theme for our wedding… come on now, who wouldn’t want to hear about that!? ;-)
