Yesterday we tweeted an open call for new bee applications, so I thought we could take a few minutes and share a bit of what we look for in bees! We receive anywhere between 20-40 applications a month, and usually accept 2 new bees per month, so we read a lot of applications!
Great style - No matter your budget, we look for people that are able to work within their means to create gorgeous, inspiring, and cohesive weddings. Being able to take aspects of your wedding day and making them uniquely your own is something that is really key to being a bee!
Willingness to share - Bees not only have the unique ability to hunt down the best and freshest ideas, tips, and sales, but they’re also awesome at sharing them with the hive! From how-tos, to great sales, to negotiation methods, bees are all about making the inaccessible accessible!
Emotional openness - We’ve noticed that people that are really willing to share not just the aesthetics of their weddings, but also the emotion involved in wedding planning are received really well by the hive. Bees are not just pretty faces; they are real people with real emotions, triumphs, and tribulations, and they are all willing to share their stories publicly.
Unique perspective - $1K wedding? Platinum wedding? Courthouse wedding? 2nd wedding? Same sex? Older brides? Interfaith? Younger brides? Planning from afar? We’re open to everyone. Bees aren’t cookie cutter, and part of the success of the hive lies in the fact that all the bees provide different and unique perspectives in their wedding planning.
A passion for blogging - Sometimes we receive interesting applications, but notice that the blogger has written 20 entries over the last 6 months or so. Bees update their blogs at least 3 times a week with meaningful content, and it’s important that each bee maintains a weekly presence on the blog! If you’re considering applying, try blogging 3+ times a week for several weeks, and see if that’s something that you’d be willing to do throughout your wedding planning process. Blogging takes passion and commitment!
A strong and memorable voice - Personality is key! I’ve personally met several bees in real life over the past couple years, and it’s so great to see how their personalities translate to their blogging voice. Whether they be bold and boisterous, to shy and sweet, a great blogger is able to inject their real personality into their writing.
There is definitely no magic formula to becoming a bee, and obviously, applicants don’t have to strike all these points! Different bees embody different aspects of the list. What’s most important is that you be you, be open, and blog frequently! And, if you apply and aren’t accepted—keep trying! Because we have so few slots, sometimes we can’t even accept bloggers we really like, but as weeks pass, slots open up again, and we always reevaluate applications that are resubmitted! Just don’t give up on blogging… blog often between your first go ’round and your second (or third!). We definitely notice if you haven’t updated much between submissions.
If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a bee, check out our application and submit it today! We’ve got so many cute characters for you to choose from!

So many bees have been recently married, and we’re looking for a few new bees today! We’re currently accepting applications for brides (and grooms!) that are getting married between now and March 2010.
