Woah… That Happened Fast!

July 8th, 2009 @ 3:02 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

Remember when I was on a mission to lose weight? I was doing pretty darn well… 20 lbs. down. My, how things have changed since the wedding!

I found myself not caring about going to get a meal at Chick Fil-A, eating ice cream everyday, and only working out 1-2 times a week, if that. What happened to me? I gained 10, count that, 10 POUNDS back since the wedding. Yes, our wedding that was a little over a month ago. Just a month! How did that happen? :(

When I went back to my kickboxing class, I almost passed out again. I remember that feeling when I took the first class back in January. Why did I let myself go? I still have no idea, but it’s time to change again.

Just a side note: I’ve been really hesitant to write this post, because I’m truly embarrassed and ashamed of how much I let myself go. However, now that it’s gotten this bad, I felt that I should admit my faults.

My local YMCA is offering a “July Journey to Panama City” challenge where your workouts convert to miles. The distance from Baton Rouge to Panama City is 325 miles, and so far, I’ve logged 38 miles. 1 mile = 3 minutes of workouts. If you are 1st, 2nd or 3rd to reach Panama City in the challenge, you get a prize. I couldn’t care less about what the prize is, but to know I can win this challenge has pushed me to re-up my goals to 4-5 workouts per week again. :) I’m also back to food journaling, and it’s made me realize so far that my snacking is out of control.

It’s good to be back, and I hope that this quickly becomes routine again!

Did you have any surprising post-wedding weight gain? How did you deal with it?

Oh, honey, don’t be embarrassed! It happens to all of us.

I found myself slightly relieved that I wouldn’t be wearing my dress to our hometown reception, because I wasn’t sure it would fit! I’ve gained about five pounds in a month and I’m feeling very bloaty and lazy — probably due to the extra weight.

So don’t feel bad. And now you’ve inspired me to NOT eat Chick-fil-a tonight. Well, maybe….

Don’t be embarrassed! I weighed myself last night and I’ve gained 10 pounds since my wedding back in May. Yes, it’s sad, but I think part of it is that I just was so stressed there for a while, that I had to let something go after the wedding. Not to mention that what’s done is done and I don’t have to worry about The Dress anymore.

Hang in there. I’m using this as a chance to refocus and get back on track! You can do it too! :)

Although FWIW, we don’t have Chik-Fil-A in Michigan…jealous!

You can do it BF! I got all stagnant after coming back home, hopefully I can work it off too! Though, I don’t think I get a prize. :)

Don’t worry–happens to all of us! Good luck on starting back up to a healthier you!

But…Chick-fil-a…isn’t that one of the healthier, better for you fast food chains? At least you’re not a wendy’s or mcdonalds junkie like me.

What better place than here to discuss? I bet you could throw a plan out there and have a bunch of people join you in some work outs / tracking / etc. You can do it!

I got married in May and I also gained 10 pounds. I also think it was a part of just exhaling all the stress from the wedding and inhaling yummy food I deprived myself of. Thank you for posting this because I need the motivation to get back on track because I think about how bad I have been with food and not exercising all the time. I also need to get back on track!

Don’t be embarrassed. I’m afraid to weigh myself. I stopped eating so healthily (and stopped denying myself a lot of stuff) then I hurt my back, so I can’t work out. I’m just trying to be kind to myself, reminding myself that I’m having to adjust to a lot of new and different things in my life and trying to take it one day at a time. So be kind to yourself, too! You have the tools to live the healthy lifestyle you want, you just need some time to figure out how to do that without the motivation of being in a wedding dress. That’s my problem, anyway.

I am right there with you Mrs Ballet Flat. I gained weight on the honeymoon. I came home and all my clothes are tighter. Back to yoga for me…now only if I can motivate myself to get up off the couch and actually go.

Funny to see you post this today. I saw on MSN.com the top 10 worst drinks in the US. Of course the Starbucks Frap was on their. It says drink one of these a day for a year and you’ll gain 28lbs. They also listed the Monster Smoothie from Smoothie King. Man I was surprised to see these drinks on here and all the calories. It is good to give yourself the mental check every now and then. I’m not married yet but I’m trying to keep my weight off so I can fit in my dress! I usually go up and down in weight by 5-10 lbs monthly so I need to get that in check!

Oh, me too! I’ve gained TWENTY pounds since my wedding 10 months ago. Yikes! I just purchased a Bodybugg (like Mrs. Avocado has) to get me back on track. So far I have lost 1/2 of a pound…it’s not much but at least I’ve stopped gaining! I think this happens to everyone. All my friends got super thin for their weddings, then plumped up after, then slowly got back to normal after a while.

Don’t be ashamed! I think it’s normal to gain back wait after you have been pushing yourself with a specific goal in mind (your wedding). Now all you need is a new goal, and it sounds like you’ve got it! Thanks for sharing and please keep us posted!!

I’m in the same boat, and here’s how I’ve rationalized this: I was so damn sick of being in control of EVERYTHING before the wedding in May that I relinquished all control of everything as soon as the wedding was over. That included food — I just didn’t want to care about things anymore; I wanted to relax and live life without pressure for a while. I don’t think this is uncommon at all. Just like you, I’ve recognized the problem and am feeling ready to jump back on the wagon again!

I just gained 4 lbs on vacation last week. I have my final dress fitting next week. Thank God it has a corset back. Don’t feel bad or be embarrassed, just get back on the wagon! I’m snacking on blackberries and I’ve run 8 miles this week so far. You’ll be to Panama in no time.

Mrs. Ballet Flat, please please please don’t take offense at this; I say it with the best intentions. Have you considered gastric bypass surgery? I had it 3.5 years ago (my high was 261, I’m 5′10″), and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My relationship with food and weight is finally normal, and I realize now how futile all my short-lived diet/exercise plans were.

Some of us will simply never get to a healthy weight — AND STAY THERE — by diet, exercise, and willpower alone. NIH backs me up on this; they found only 5 percent of people who lose 100 or more pounds keep it off, and most of that 5 percent has become fanatical about it, like they teach aerobics, for example — something that’s not really practical or likely for most people.

Anyway, it just pains me to see someone still stuck in that same rut of feeling motivated, then succumbing to *normal* behavior (wanting to enjoy what we eat, for instance), and beating yourself up over it. That’s no way to live.

@Staceyrp: Oh yeah, I had to give up Fraps a long time ago. Easy to resist now, but when Pumpkin Spice comes out in the fall, it will be a little more difficult!
@maizybug: OMG…I think you found the reason. That has to be it…I just didn’t care and I cared so much before. You must be channeling my brain!
@Lina: I actually did once consider it, but I have a friend who had it done who completely scared me away from it. It is going to be very difficult to lose these 80 lbs. but I’m just hoping that once I get that kick start, like I did last time, I’ll be unstoppable. :) Thanks for the suggestion though!
@sarsk624: You are a running superstar! Wow!

Mine started before the wedding. Initially I needed my dress tucked at the waist, but by D-Day I had gained enough weight to fit into it and save myself the money (I’m really trying to think positively about it since it’s over and done with…). But then the all-you-can-eat-at-every-meal-and-every-minute-for-that-matter cruise honeymoon is where I gained another 10. Since I teach and come home right before dinner (nope, we don’t get to go home when the bell rings at 3), I don’t have much time to exercise (I signed up for summer school too… why, I don’t know) and am at a total for 15-20 gained. Game plan: I recently bought a couple 10-minute Solution DVDs. Yesterday was Day 1 and I’m feeling better already! Post-wedding-15 be gone!

Good luck with the contest! I also find it SO much easier to get inspired to exercise when I have a specific goal–or a buddy that I feel bad bailing on!

I also do kickboxing, and had this exact experience one week ago today - it was my first session back in like a month and my sidekicks left much to be desired. It was ugly. So I feel you on that!! But I’m going back today!

At least you caught yourself at 10, I just let it keep going, and going and going! Now my little sister is getting married and both of our weddings will be splashed all over the house, and I’m so worried that there will be a huge difference in my photos :(.

One thing my BodyBugg has taught me is that you don’t necessarily have to be running every single day to burn enough calories. One day I met my target goal of calories burned by cooking. Yes cooking! All of that time spent on my feet (it was a cooking marathon that lasted for hours and hours) really burnt a lot of calories. Of course I ate it all back when I ate all the food I just made, but you get the idea :) Chopping up vegetables, taking out the trash, doing the laundry, cleaning the bathroom… all of those things on top of your workouts (even if your workouts are only a few days a week) can make a huge difference if you are watching what you eat at the same time.

Go you for being so brave and talking about these things in such a public forum!
