Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!
About Mrs. Kitten

Source

Three weeks before our wedding, I stumbled across a great idea for a DIY wedding gift on one of my favorite wedding blogs (aside from The ‘bee, of course!), OnceWed. The project is a pocket square (aka handkerchief) with a message to the groom. In the tutorial, Laurie used an excerpt from The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear:

“And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon.”

Although this project would be easy to personalize with whatever content you choose, this particular passage struck me as perfect for our seaside wedding. And the price for this DIY project was right as well!

Here are the materials I used:

Source

  • Cotton Pocket Square: $1.10
  • Embroidery Floss (two colors): $.65
  • Embroidery Hoop - $1.49
  • Embroidery Needles - $1.49

(Make sure the pocket square is cotton. I found mine at Men’s Wearhouse in a package of 12.)

Fast forward two weeks. It’s the night before our flight to the Cayman Islands. I had the materials, but due a bad bout with bronchitis, I hadn’t started the project! And never mind that I had never embroidered anything before! That’s when my cousin Susan stepped in. She is a knitting/embroidery queen and offered to help me “start” the project so I could work on our Scrapbook Table Numbers. Score! I directed her to the OnceWed tutorial so she could get the project started:

Before I knew it, she had finished the pocket square! And she even added a little moon—so perfect! Here it is, pressed and folded on the wedding day:

On the morning of the wedding, I sent one of my bridesmaids to bring Mr. K his pocket square. Joe Simon was filming the guys getting ready, and filmed Mr. K reading it out loud. He put the audio clip at the end of our wedding movie trailer and I love how it turned out!

Have any of your “DIY” projects turned in to “DISE” (delegate it to someone else)?

I forgot to mention! Mr. K actually used his hankie all night! We had an outdoor, tropical-weather reception so it got REALLY used. But the embroidery held up perfectly, so I just hand washed it and it’s good as new. :)

Thanks for the info on the tutorial! I have been planning on doing something like this for our moms. I have been having a heck of a time finding handkercheifs though!

Also that was one of my favorite poems from my childhood! I used to request it every night before bed, my dad still knows it by heart.

Love it! I may have to do what Quiche is thinking of and making it for our anniversary. I certainly DISE on my DIY projects. My sister made our ring bearer pillows, my veil and my hair piece.

I love this idea! I am DISE the table runner sewing to the FMIL. She has been known to whip up a table runner between lunch and dinner on a whim so she was more than willing to help. In fact, she may be the best FMIL ever. She offered to help in any way we needed with the DIY stuff but said if I’d rather her butt out, that’s fine as well. Of course I want her help, especially since my mother is not the craftiest. My mom believes that if someone works for a living at something, you should pay them to do it for you. My favorite part of the Bee is all the DIY ideas. Keep them coming please!

What a fantastic idea. It’s a bit late for me to make Mr June one (although we do have an anniversary coming up!) but I think my eldest will love this idea when I tell her. Thank you.
