I Want to Be Somebody Loved

July 9th, 2009 @ 1:50 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

Mr. Bear Cub and I have been busying ourselves with quite a lot of wedding tasks recently—one of which is dance lessons! We’re making some headway on our fancy footwork, but I’ll save the details for another post. Right now, our lovely dance instructor is helping us choreograph our first dance. You need a song to be able to choreograph, so we’ve been pondering the “first dance” song pretty heavily!

Last weekend when while Mr. Cubbie and I were on a 10-mile run (marathon training full steam ahead!), one of my favorite songs played in my iPod.

The song, Somebody Loved, is by The Weepies. Even though their name is a bit of a downer, they play some of the happiest, upbeat music ever! It’s great running music! This song is one of their slower ones, but I think it’s so beautiful. If you have a minute, you should read the lyrics along with the song (linked here).

The thing we’re grappling with however, is how do you dance to a song like this? It’s beautiful, the lyrics describe us, but the tune is a little hard to actually choreograph. Our dance instructor started us with a whole bunch of lyrical moves, but that is not us. We don’t really feel comfortable dancing for show, but we definitely want to do a much more technical dance than the 8th-grade sway.

Maybe we need to change our song to a more up-tempo one.

Take It From Me is very sweet, and a little more up-tempo…

and Jolene sounds like it could be very fun to dance to! I don’t know if the lyrics are very fitting for a “first dance”, though.

The other end of the stick is that we have our band! I’m really excited to have them play our wedding - they’re a local Oregon folk/bluegrass band, with a bit of an Irish sentiment to their style. We’ve asked them to play our first song, but this raises another issue - they don’t have a female singer. Normally not a biggie (I like guys’ singing voices all the same), but “Somebody Loved” is sung by a girl. Seeing as how the major melody for the song is in her voice, I don’t know how well it will translate into a cover by 3 guys, a mandolin, bass, and violin. Their style is a bit more “Jolene”, if you know what I mean.

Should we keep looking for a first dance song? Mr. Bear Cub and I both love folk music - Hem, Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek, Mark Kozelek, Laura Veirs, Josh Ritter, Joan Baez, Iron & Wine, Dick Gaughan, Damien Rice, Charlie Cutten, Billie Bragg, Beth Orton, The Be Good Tanyas, … Actually, we like a lot of music.

Or should we stay with our song, and try to learn some dance moves that won’t leave us feeling like awkward 13-year-olds? Do you know of a good dance style that would go with our song? Do you have an even better suggestion for a song?

I LOVE Somebody Loved - it’s one of my favorite songs. My MOST favorite is Ray LaMontagne “Hold You in My Arms.”

We’re taking dance lessons as well! Our song is an oldie with some pep to it, so our dance will be a combination of “foxy” (less formal foxtrot) and swing. :-)

Love your song choice, but if you want another folk type song. Check out the song we danced to- Jaymay, You are the only one I love. It was the hit of the evening (everyone was asking about it) and we totally did the 13yo sway.

Can’t wait to hear about the dance lessons. Similarly, I wish I could listen to the songs you posted (worksite won’t allow video! darnit!).

LOVE!!! the Be Good Tanyas. Our first dance song was the Littlest Birds for sentimental reasons, it was the first song the man and I danced to ever. He taught me how to swing to that one.

Personally, I think you should go with the song that means more to you. I am loving “somebody loved”, and it wouldnt be all taht difficult to dance to. We took a few dance lessons (enough that we were comfortable with basic steps, a few turns, and a couple lifts) and then we put it together ourselves. Would Mary Murphy tell us it was all wrong? Probably. But we enjoyed ourselves, weren’t stressed over what step was next, and everyone said it was a beautiful first dance. Learn teh basics, pick a key point in the music for a special turn or lift, and just dance the relaxed basics for the rest.

If I were you, I’d totally 8th grade sway to the Weepies!

We have the same music taste…I love it! :)

I woke up to “Somebody Loved” in my head today. Love that song! :)

I was just on Pandora.com radio, and found a new song, “Sandusky” by Uncle Tupelo. It’s instrumental and would be great as a prelude/processional song, or as backdrop to a slideshow. Check that out. You can never go wrong with Pandora - I find tons of new music this way!

I LOVE the Weepies!! What about their song “Gotta Have You?” That’s a little more up tempo but it’s still a great love song…”nothing else will do, I’ve gotta have you.”

I think you should do whatever song means the most to you and go from there with the dancing.

Gosh, the first song is so beautiful! I think you guys could pull off a great first dance to that.
I can’t help but thinking of the Dolly Parton song “Jolene” when I hear this one!

I love the weepies and was considering take it from me for our wedding! Would love to hear what your band says-we are also having a bluegrass band and I am sort of assuming they won’t really be able to play something like that and we should just let them choose our first dance song. On another note–I have some questions about life in La Serena, Chile. Is there a way to pm you? I couldn’t figure it out. Thanks!

I had never heard of the Weepies, but am now in love with their music! You should stick to your gut instinct and use “Somebody Loved”. It is a Rumba and a ballroom choreographer should be able to give you a dance which is sexy and romantic without being “lyrical” or “8th grade sway”.

“Somebody Loved” is desperate to be your processional. It’s the perfect tempo for a processional. It was born to be a processional. Please help it fulfill its life’s purpose by making it your processional? :-)
