About Mrs. Joey

I’ve been working on the table numbers/menu/after party cards (which I’m calling thingies) for days. DAYS. You’d think it would be easy, but it’s not. Well, it’s not hard, but it is very time consuming. Because of the number and size of our tables, I need about 40 table thingies done.

The cutting took hours, and I watched all of the movie Milk and only got 17 thingies put together. I’m not even halfway there.

I did learn a few things, though. Even though the idea seemed simple, the execution took a long time (cutting and taping). I also learned that double-stick tape was my best bet. Glue made the edges look wrinkled, even when it dried. I tried Elmer’s white glue, glue stick, and rubber cement, but the pricier tape looked best.

I also played around a bit with the look. In my last post about the table thingies, I mentioned the numbers seemed to need something. I tried painting the edges with yellow paint and I tried creating a base with Fimo clay.

I didn’t like the paint. It made the edges wrinkled, and it was time consuming. I liked the Fimo OK, but I’m not sure if it really adds much. What do you think? Fimo base or no Fimo base?

I think the base is totally cute! A little funky and modern, and a bright *pop* of color. (Which, you probably know by now, I’m more than a little obsessed with!)

The base is a wonderful idea! It adds just the right amount of color, but does not take away from the simplicity of the “thingies”.

I like the base! I like the paint too. :-( Making Memories (a scrapbook company) sells paints that have had most of their water removed, so they don’t warp paper as much. Not to give you something else to buy….

Could you make a stencil and use a sponge around the edges? i am not sure either of these above are working for what you’re looking to do.

I just looked at your last post, and I see how they are going to work together. Could you maybe get some inexpensive, thin dowels, paint them bright yellow, and slip them through the middle of the whole thing, and THEN put them on the base? Vertically. It’s hard for me to explain! PM me if you are interested! I think it just needs a tweak and you’ll get it.

If it’s not too late in your construction, you might want to look into Xyron adhesives. They have little ‘machines’ where you run your paper through and it adds a thin layer of an adhesive to the paper (like making a big sticker). They do sell the same type of adhesive without needing to buy the whole ‘machine.’ This device adds a thin layer of adhesive and doesn’t wrinkle the paper or warp it any way. It works on all kinds of paper, I have used it mainly to add vellum paper to the front of ceremony programs. It is very sticky, so you need to be careful when placing the paper, but it is wonderful!!

I like the yellow base. Have you considered making the word “Table” in yellow? Or using a yellow Paint Pen to make the edges yellow . . . that might not be as “wet” either.

I like the Fimo base. I think it adds just enough but not too much that it would overwhelm the rest of your design.

I like the cute pop of color. Father than mess with making the base though, could you use something else yellow that you could just alter. Umm… I’m thinking cut a slit in a bouncy ball, a lemon?

I do like the base but if you’re still not satisfied - if you have the patience (I have a lot ) you could get a yellow marker such as a sharpie and draw a line with a ruler to add the ‘yellow’ punch

I definitely don’t like the paint, but the base is really cute! =) Like Miss Bruschetta said, it gives the menus a little modern touch, and a little oomph of colour.

@iswimibikeirun: All the numbers, menus and directions are all printed out.

@hokaroni: I thought about that but I just don’t think we have the time. :(

I like the fimo base. How about using some thing brightly colored tape for the edges? I seem to recall seeing masking tape in umpteen different colors. That might secure the edges and avoid the dreaded wrinklyness.

I like the base too. Another way you may want to add the stripe of color here or there is to use that same nice quality double faced tape and do a strip of yellow ribbon down just one side as a stripe. I would be a lovely pop of satin and color. Or even a strip of yellow card stock (you should only need a few sheets to cut strips out of them for all of yours). Card stock always works better for these things so it doesn’t wrinkle.
Also you could do a little bit of yellow rhinestones here and there for a little pop of yellow. Purchase a whole sheet of sticky yellow rhinestones and have fun with it! Good luck!

btw - the best 2 faced tape is the red ones that you can buy at Michael’s called duck tape. (not duct LOL - duck as in quack) LOL. They are a bit expensive but so worth it. They roll quickly and easily and will save you time. Use a coupon from the Sunday paper and save 40% off a set of 4 rolls. Take it from a pro who makes things for clients all the time. They are worth the money in the time they save you!

Yup, and if you don’t like rhinestones there are colored dot stickers that have the appearance of rhinestones but are flat. We used them on our programs instead of brads which are much more time consuming.

If they’re not put together yet you cold just add a yellow background and tape the current cards to them, then put them together… that would add the color ur looking for I think :-) LOVE the Fimo base… so cute!
