Registering - Part 2 - ETSY!!

July 9th, 2009 @ 4:21 pm by Mrs. Apple Cider

After our experience with the “big brands” (e.g. Bed, Bath & Beyond and Williams-Sonoma), we felt an overwhelming need to find more “us” stuff. Don’t get me wrong… we registered for plenty of stuff at BB&B, but we have a love of unique art pieces, so I thought we should create an Etsy registry.

Currently Etsy doesn’t have an official registry, so I decided to create a button on our wedding website and a post a few items that we liked.

(this button is on our website but not clickable here)

I asked people to comment on the blog post on our site if they purchase anything. I wanted to share with you some of the items that we registered for!

Square Bird and Branch Dish by Laurel Begley Ceramics - $14

Super Bowl in Outfit pattern, Vapid Colorway by Jill Rosenwald - $200

NYC Coaster Set by PepperSprouts - $25

Would you consider setting up an Etsy registry? What would you register for there?

I would definitely register for Whitney Smith! Her peony platter and bowls are to die for! Throw in one of her bird cake stands and a few leaf trays and I’d be in heaven. I would also register for a lot of vintage items on there. I love milk glass vases and vintage salt and pepper shakers. You can get vintage china, baking dishes etc. I would have appreciate it a lot more than buying new stuff and it would have been a lot more green.

btw, there are ways to set up an etsy registry, just not on the etsy site. See here: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6200077

Here is an article that discusses the best way to set up an etsy registry and lists all the sites you can consider: http://www.etsy.com/storque/reviews/handmade-weddings-custom-registry-websites-1350/
Also, this site also lets you do an etsy registry of sorts but alos lets you include handmade items from other sites as well! https://www.byhand.me/component/option,com_content/id,3247/task,view/

myregistry.com seems to be pretty user friendly. We’re planning on using it for all of our “other stuff” from Anthropologie, a few prints from Etsy, etc.

@MrsLifeAccounts I had never seen Whitney Smith’s work before, but I love it!

I think you can also add Etsy items to sites like http://www.MyRegistry.com, where you put all the items you want (online and in stores) in one list, instead of having a separate list per store.

That is such a great idea! We’ve been having the same dilemma, because we’d love to register for art or handmade goods on Etsy, but couldn’t figure out a way to control that kind of registry.

Wow, what a great idea! Maybe Etsy will create this as an option is a few people suggest it!

I think it would be wonderful if Etsy set up a registry. I would also wee myself if IKEA would get on board with setting one up. I keep emailing them, but no luck so far!

An etsy registry would be awesome. I just found out tenthousandvillages.com has a registry. I wish I knew that sooner bc they have a lot of awesome original stuff.

I set up an Etsy wish list and added it to our registry links - I wish there was an easier way, but even if it inspired people to shop at the local gallery boutique or craft show, I’m happy - I love artisan made home accessories!

alternativegiftregistry.org is another site to use to set up a registry with etsy & other items — we used it for our wedding!

I also registered for various things from etsy in order to avoid the big box stores. I don’t buy from them in my everyday life, so why would I want to be “registered” there. Eww, no offence but it sends chills down my spine.

Unfortunately not everyone in my family thinks the alternative registry is a good idea. One relative sniffed that there was no way she would buy me “that old stuff” (referring to a gorgeous vintage serving piece). This has been the most difficult part of the wedding so far. It is heartbreaking to me that the people I love want me to conform to their idea of corporate consumption. No one has bought anything from the registry so far (not even the towels which are new and from an eco-friendly store).

Just wanted to add I rarely point out to my family that I try and make these choices daily. In other words I don’t try to change them and I don’t preach my values to them, so I don’t think it is some kind of passive resistance.

I’m definitely registering for things on Etsy - but I’m using the myregistery.com tool. I also think that I might contact the sellers of the items I would like to see if they’ll reserve the listings for me for a few months so that I’m not having to constantly check to see if the items have sold to someone else.
