Polka Dotted Cake

July 12th, 2009 @ 11:20 am by Mrs. Star

I’ve known ever since we decided to incorporate polka dots into our wedding scheme that a polka dotted cake would be the perfect way to showcase the theme at the reception!

There sure are a lot of different ways to do polka dots on a cake, though! Surprisingly many! I’d love to share a few of them with you and get your feedback.

I like this one because I love the idea of having a polka dot cake with a differently-decorated tier in the middle. Plus, the green is so cute!

This one is in our colors! And aren’t those black bows just too cute to eat? Only thing is, I really want black with white polka dots like the rest of our current polkas.

Look at this cute little thing! How flirty are those big, white dots? That cake stand has me drooling, too…

I had to include this one because it’s just a fabulous representation of a polka dotted cake, but come to think of it, it really doesn’t fit in with our wedding at all. The style is adorable, but it’s a little too cutesy for the city vibe we’ve got going. I love pink weddings done right, though.

This one is probably closest to the current vision I’ve had going on in my head. You might recognize it from my teensy little inspiration board!

This Martha cake is darling, of course. I love that the dots are different sizes and that they’re more three-dimensional.

So what do you think? Which one do you think fits the style of our wedding the best?

I like the style of the pink one but I would do the black with white polka dots. My second fav is the blue Martha cake.

Love the pink one - but for what you’re going for - Chocolate polka dot!

I love the bows…could you switch the colors and make them white on a black cake. They are so elegant!

OK, so I voted for the pink polka dot cake, not because I think it fits the style of your wedding, but because I think you could incorporate the larger and smaller dots into your cake design. I think it would look adorable in your colors!

I voted for Martha, both because the three-dimensional frosting looks super tasty and homemade (in the best, best possible sense - everyone knows homemade cake tastes better than store-bought!), and because the really flat, fondant-looking frosting looks… well, flat. There’s a lot more texture to traditional frosting, which I love. A wedding cake is meant to be eaten!

I do really like the middle tier being a different pattern, though. Imagine a three-tier cake with dimensional frosting, and a different middle layer. Yum!

Hi Star!

I had this inspiration board in my favorite places from months ago when our color story was still black, white and green. The cake was always my favorite, though it was white with black polkadots… you may have seen it before: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3041/2531199640_4f71184e75_o.jpg

It’s been in my favorites for so long I’m not sure where I found it so I can’t give credit.

@Jennarationnext: Thanks so much for sharing this with me! What a gorgeous inspiration board! It’s kind’ve creepy how similar my tastes are with that board without having seen it: the bouts, the cake, even aspects of the bouquet…weird!

Miss Star: I love the green and white with the polka dots and stripes. Maybe you could get it in your colors though? I’m biased——I heart polka dots and stripes:-)

All of them are soo cute! However why not do a black cake with white dots with a ‘third’ color to ‘pop’ out the cake. Since you liked the green in the first one - why not put that in as the accent color.

No problem! I thought of you when I pulled it up and saw the boutonnieres and the headpiece!

That cake would even look pretty with white polkadots on black, and where the solid black is at the top of each tier it could be your purple.

Even though your other polka dots are white dots on black, I really like the look of black dots on white when it comes to the cake. I guess when I think wedding cake I imagine a white base with color on top if you like, just like I imagine a white base to a wedding dress!

Ms. Star I like the polka dots very cute. I voted for the black with white dots/bows.. however I noticed that it has rounded edges vs. square. The green, blue and pink cakes have squared edges. The others have round edges. I think I like the clean squared edges for the modern classy clean look. Something to think about. I hadn’t thought about the two different edges till my cake lady mentioned it this week. It does make a difference how the dots look.

I love love love all those cakes. How fun and modern! I love the the white cake with black bows. I think though that the dots are too big and may be better smaller or with several different sized dots. I too would worn against a back cake with white polka dots. There is just something about black cake that is not that appetizing and if it is the opposite pattern as the rest of your polka dot patterns it will add interest. I can’t wait to see what you choose.

I’m doing a polka dot cake too- getting married on new year’s eve with a champagne bubble theme. There’s a gorgeous polka dot ivory on sparkly-ivory cake in a preview for the show “platinum weddings” on WE, but after hours of searching online I can’t find it. Wish I could give you a link to it cause you just might move it to the top of your list! Anyone know what cake I’m talking about?

Could you combine the things you love about these cakes (black with white dots, unique middle layers, bows, 3-d dots) into one idea? I’m sure if you visited your baker with these pictures, they could combine them into a cake that was totally “Mr. and Mrs. Star”! Do make sure that you taste-test the frosting they’re going to use beforehand, though, because sometimes black frosting/fondant tastes absolutely disgusting.

Are you sure you want black icing? I went to a wedding with royal blue icing on the cake, and it turned everyone’s teeth etc. blue. Black icing/fondant looks a little scary…it is pretty but doesn’t look like something that one should put in their mouth. Just another pov.
