Are Those Sea Urchins?

Are Those Sea Urchins? : wedding diy Other004

No, this isn’t a sea urchin. This is my attempt at making paper poms. Making these suckers wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Come on, tissue paper and wire? I can do that. Nope.

Well, I can do that, but they don’t look as nice as the ready-made ones you see on Etsy. My “petals” were wrinkled and my poms didn’t look as round as Martha’s.

Why the poms? Well, at first I thought about using 6-8 of them to give our chapel a little splash of color but as I was practicing by making small poms, I realized the poms would give our tables and centerpieces the texture I had been looking for.

I think I’m going to stay away from the pointy edged poms (aka sea urchins) and stick with the round edged ones.

What DIY fooled you into thinking it was easy to execute?

I had some trouble with these too. If you’re still making them try not cutting the points not so deep. Just clip the very ends into a point. Then they look amazing! I really like your color choices!

I haven’t tried poms yet, so I’m sure those will fool me. This wasn’t for the wedding but I once tried to make my friend’s new baby an upholstered letter and I finally had to give up b/c I burned myself w/ the glue gun too much :-/

Hee hee! I forayed into DIY with a pom a few months ago and it actually came out pretty darn good…(I’m so not crafty so it was a pleasant surprise). My guy came home and asked where I had bought it…:)

Sea urchins hahah your hilarious! I think you did a great job, the pointy ones are cool but the round edges look great!! I can’t wait to see your updated table decor I love what you have so far.

I bought the Martha Stewart kit about a year ago just because I thought they looked neat… I had every intention on hanging them in the bedroom, but they became a cat toy instead.

Anyway, I think your rounded edge ones look nice! I agree with April… if you do decide to do pointy ones, make the edge more like a flat zigzag than long points– at least that’s how Martha’s were pre-cut : )

Pom should definitely come with a warning sign “May look easier than they appear”!

I tried these too. My mom and I used to make them out of tissue when i was younger and they wold come out so pretty and full. We’d tie them together with thread. Somehow, the tissue paper and wire was not working for me. Then I tried it with ribbon and it worked out even worse. LOL I am planning on putting poms on the favor boxes so I need to practice some more.

I think there’s some hidden wisdom to the fact that it takes a long time to get the hang of shaping the poms, and it takes many poms to make a full pomander…..I made three poms and they took be long long long-ass time, but it looked better as I went along. Mine had long, not-to-narrow petals but I rounded them at the end. Pointy + black = kinda harsh looking (or, as you mention, sea urchin looking!)

Yeah, just say no to pointy edges. I’ve tried, and maybe I just can’t fluff correctly, but I get much better flowers (half a globe) than poms (full globe).

Oh thank you for posting this. I was beginning to think every Bee was craft-i-ly gifted. I agree that they should come with a warning. may appear easier then they really are. I think you prolly got some good advice here and think they don’t look bad at all!

If you use more paper they’ll be fuller and then of course look better and then fluff all to one side and then do all to the other side. My sister figured out the opposite side part. I pulled the paper all to the same side and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t looking too fab. But it’s coming along! This is so much harder than it looks. Practice! Thank goodness it’s so cheap to do them!

I’m still pretty impressed with your poms. My mother and sister bought the Martha kit for my shower and it still took them forever to eek them out. I actually like the urchin look :)

Ha! That’s exactly what my dad called them when my mom took on this task. Needless to say we won’t be using the first round!

I bought them from PomLove on Etsy and while the turned out looking great, it took a little while to get used to fluffing. Don’t give up because they were soooo cute for my daughter’s party.

How many pieces of tissue are you using? Mine had 12 each.

I like the more paper suggestion to make them fuller — my practice pom looked a little thin. I did find that the a smaller scallop cut on the edge makes them prettier in my opinion! I am using floral wire to attach them to the chairs along the aisle for the ceremony and adding ribbons.

I tried doing the round ones also following the instructions on Martha’s website and ended up with a mess. Did you follow the instructions exactly? if not what did you change I only had on hand 20 in by 20 in tissue paper as opposed to the 20 in by 30in I didnt even realize they weren’t the right size when I bought them :( and used only 8 sheets Im wondering what else I can try I really want to make these for my babyshower in 2 weeks
