Bombs Away!

July 13th, 2009 @ 11:49 am by Mrs. Star

So, we mailed out our 80 invitations this week. It was quite the relief, because pretty much every piece of those things was handcrafted by yours truly. This was by far my most ambitious wedding DIY project. I’ll post later with pictures of them and some tips on what I learned, but for now, I’ll give you some pictures that tell the story of our mailing saga.

We had quite the drama over what would be the correct postage for these puppies. I delegated to Mr. Star the arduous task of taking a finished invitation to the post office (which is ALWAYS crowded in New York, despite the fact that there are about 5 within a few blocks!) and getting it weighed to find out how much it would cost to mail them.

He went to one postal worker who told him it would be nearly $2 to mail each invitation, and while this seemed high to him, he didn’t know how much I was expecting to spend and went ahead and bought $160 worth of postage.

When he came home and told me what had happened, I freaked.

Hoping to have spent somewhere in the $60-$70 range and knowing that USPS would be unlikely to give us our money back, I was distraught. Mr. Star quickly went to another nearby post office and was given a much better .61 cent quote by two different postal workers who both thought that the original guy was crazy.

To make a long story (and about 8 visits to the post office and 5 phone calls to the USPS complaint line by Mr. Star) short, we did end up getting our money back and were given the correct stamps. It did end up delaying us getting our invitations out by about a week, though, which may not seem like such a big deal to anyone else, but to me it definitely was. I had just seriously busted my butt to get all the calligraphy done quickly and then had our finished invitations sitting around our kitchen for a week—it was frustrating.

So that might be why Mr. Star looks so happy and relieved to be carrying the box of invites to the post office:

Isn’t he cute?

I felt a little sad because I was handing the pride and joy of my wedding paper crafting over to the postal workers whom I know will not treat my invitations in the manner I would like. I told Mr. Star that after all that work there should be trumpets or something. At which point, he proceeded to make loud trumpet noises as I walked down the crowded sidewalk. This is my reaction to that:

But in the end, we were both more than a little happy to have them in the mail and on their way!

My message to you is this: please, please, PLEASE have your invitations weighed and priced at more than one post office if you think there’s anything wonky about the quote they gave you.

What invitation mailing snafus have you run into?

ditto on that! i have had some shady dealings at USPS and if it were cost effective for me to individually put the invitation in a UPS or FedEx envelope and mail that way, I would have. I hated spending even 1 cent at USPS.

Congrats on getting those puppies out and i have my fingers and toes crossed that they arrive to your guests safe and sound!

Y’know, I think sometimes having men doing even the most simple dask can turn into a circus. Case in point - Sent Fiance to Liquor Store to buy wine. Gave him the example bottle to take with him. He comes home with extra large sized bottle of wine, because “it was a better deal” nevermind that I’d already made the table numbers to go on them, or that they wouldn’t fit in the wine coasters I’d already made, painted, and slaved over. All of this nonsense for “A better deal”

I would have passed out if they said $2 dollars to mail them. UGH! I am so glad that you got your money back and everything worked out!

Many many snafus with my invites! Good thing I had buffered in an extra week - even though it took 3 extra weeks! Now I’m sending them out with just under 8 weeks until the wedding - YIKES! Not a big deal to most… but to me it makes me nervous. Good thing I sent out STDs!

You’re so on top of the ball! Invites out already! Our wedding is exactly 2 months away and we still don’t have the envelopes printed or addressed. No wonder I haven’t slept well in a week! They’re going out tomorrow - I swear.

Wow, it’s great that you got your money back! NYC USPS are especially cranky, I find.

I just mailed mine on Saturday! So exciting. We were lucky to sneak by with just 1 regular 44 cent stamp! …I just hope that guy wasn’t lying to me and they all come back! the horror!

Is it because they’re stiff? Our STDs had the same issue, and it was “because they’re stiff, not flexible, and that changes the charge”. We ended up getting 1/3 back, returned for insufficient postage. I hope that doesn’t happen to you!

Man, postage is definitely one of those hidden costs you don’t think about until you need it! But it sounds like everything worked out (better late than never!). And you looked super cute on the NYC streets! Like a mini SATC character! :D

I made the mistake of assuming that ours would be 44 cents, since I wasn’t putting in a lot of extras, but the envelope liners ended up adding a lot of weight. We used the food scale at home and determined that they would be 61 cents, but I would have splurged for the 62 cents dragonfly stamps if I hadn’t already purchased the king and queen stamps.

I also felt nervous putting them in the mail, the invitation had been such a huge investment of my time and they looked so nice. This weekend it was my sister’s bridal shower, and I was told by someone that it was maybe the prettiest invitation she had ever received. It was so nice to hear after all the hours spent working on them.

We’re lucky here in Canada — as long as we make ours to fit a certain size long and tall, and as long as they’re not too thick (and, of course, not too heavy!), we can just use a regular stamp to send them anywhere in the country. =) We only need to send one to the US, and one internationally, so whee for us!

We had 4 totally different quotes from USPS and decided to pick the lowest and to send a test invite. It ended up working out and no invites were returned! So random how they are not all consistent in their answers!? Can’t wait to see your invitations. :)

@Gilneas: Yes, they are especially cranky in NYC! I hate having to go to the post office here, which is why I made the mistake of delegating to Mr. Star. Oops.

And to everyone who’s jealous of me getting my invites out: don’t feel bad. I only sent out email save-the-dates and we have half of our guests coming in from out-of-state, so I felt the pressure to get these puppies out!

I have had ours weighed at 4 differnt places, and I’m looking at about 1$ each. It makes me cringe to think about it..

OMG! The exact same thing happened to me with our STDs. I had a mini-meltdown in the post office when I showed up with 60 under-stamped envelopes and had to buy ugly 10 cent stamps to finish them out. I will not make the same mistake again!!!
