I’m certainly not talking about Mr. Sunbeam! I definitely think he is “the one”. I’m talking about the wedding dress! In all, I must have tried on something like 30 dresses, trying desperately to sort out my preferences and hoping to find something that fit the feel of our wedding. I became a firm disbeliever in this so called idea that you’d “just know when it’s THE dress”, until it finally happened!

Remember this dress by Claire Pettibone? What made me love it was plunging v-neck and wide open back. It also had a nice layer of chiffon over satin that gave the dress a subtle swishy movement. The problem is that it didn’t look quite the same on me as it does on the model (what, I’m not a model??). The top wasn’t as deep and the drape was not so nice. My mom was not a fan either. So I moved on.
I just happened to be trying on the Pettibone again while Christos was having a trunk show at Saks. The consultant obviously forgot about my price point when she slipped this one on me.

Granted I did not like the flutters, which Momma Sunbeam loved, but I liked the dress, and spent time mulling over its $4K price tag. I found a place in China that would makes a knock off version for $200, but that seemed so risky, even if it was really cheap! Again, I moved on.
My next crush was on a Vera. What bride can resist Vera Wang? I thought I could. I was wrong. While this dress was also expensive, I nearly bought it as a sample at Saks for $2500.

But, the sample was too off-white for me. I’m talking a very vintage looking brown/yellow off-white. Meh. I also thought the night-gownish look just wasn’t right for our chapel wedding. Are you starting to think that I over analyze things?! I can’t help it. On two different blogs I spotted brides wearing this dress. It looked great on them and fit in so well with their vineyard weddings, but that wasn’t the type of wedding we are having. In the end, the doubts did not justify the price, so I moved on again, but a theme was starting to arise!
The next dress was the final toad before I found my prince… well, princess. Oh Monique Lhuillier, you are so pretty and lacy with v-necks and deep backs…

… but so expensive, even secondhand, on sites like Once Wed. Once Wed has some great secondhand deals, but I was worried about not trying on the dress before handing over some cash. So, I found similar dresses at sample sales, and discovered this style didn’t look so hot, after all. It had no structure, so it showed every bump and divot. Eek.
After trying on so many dresses and thinking so many could be it, but only to change my mind, I became a firm disbeliever in brides just knowing when it’s “The One”. But then, it seriously happened! I just knew the moment I saw my dress that it was “The One”!. So, next up… “The One!”
Did “The One” hit you like a sock full of nickels? Or were you an over analyzer, like me?
