GOOP Detox

July 14th, 2009 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Penguin

Do you GOOP? If you haven’t heard of GOOP yet, it’s a weekly lifestyle newsletter sent out by Gwyneth Paltrow. She writes about all kinds of things; each week focuses on a specific topic, like her favorite restaurants in LA, NY, and London, to her favorite cookie recipes, to gift ideas, to an extended discussion of “frenemies”. Some of it is fascinating, some of it I totally can’t relate to, but all in all, I love receiving the GOOP newsletter in my inbox once a week. A few weeks ago, the newsletter’s topic was a 1 week detox program that focused on resting your digestive system and expelling toxins from your body, while not actually starving yourself.

Ever since Mrs. Canary did the Blueprint Cleanse, I’ve wanted to participate in a detox program. Now that I’ve moved away from my parents’ house, I’ve also moved away from my gym, and eating with my 30 year old husband is very different from eating with my 60 year old parents who are hell bent on watching their cholesterol. After a nasty bout with E.Coli a few years back, my kidneys and bladder are a little bit damaged, and I find myself having to go pee 3-4 times a night, which is horrible for my sleeping patterns. Between my change in diet, leaving my gym, and my pee habits, I knew I wanted to give my insides a jump start. But the price tag of Blueprint was hard to swallow, and while I was ready to get on board and do it, Mr. Penguin refused to participate with the $85 a day price tag per person. And I knew I couldn’t go through a cleanse without a partner… especially if my partner was eating normal foods while I was cleansing. So, when GOOP’s detox newsletter came out, I showed the plan and recipes to Mr. Penguin, and he said he’d definitely get on board with this one.

As a disclaimer, you should discuss any sort of detox program you start with your doctor!

Last night, we purchased the food needed for the first 5 days of the program, using the recipes provided. It was an epic shopping trip. Check out our loot:

w197695

I’ve never bought that many groceries at once! We usually hit the grocery store once every day!

Surprisingly, the diet doesn’t cost much (considering you are not allowed to eat anything else). I bought all the food for the first 5 days, for the two of us, and the bill came out to $160. Keep in mind that I bought 2 expensive canisters of supplements ($14 for GreenSuperfood + $15 for whey powder) that I won’t buy on subsequent shopping trips. So that comes out to about $16 per day, per person, for food.

Some of the interesting additions to the detox are these:

w19769502

Whey protein
- A great source of protein (duh), and is more rapidly digestible than other sources of protein

Green SuperFood with probiotics - GOOP suggests a different brand (ProGreens) but the Green SuperFood was on sale at our grocery store for 50 percent off ($14) and we couldn’t resist a good deal.

Agave nectar - A natural sweetener that has a lower glycemic index than other natural sweeteners. It tastes really good, like a very light honey.

Grapeseed oil
- Holy moly! I thought this stuff was packaged in a green bottle, but as you can see, it’s actually that electric green color! It’s clean, neutral and light tasting.

Almond milk
- Made from ground almonds. This is completely vegan, and completely disgusting. I was describing the taste to Mrs. Bee last night, and I told her it tastes like baby pee. She said she didn’t know what baby pee tasted like. Ah, touche. Okay, so I don’t either, but I imagine that if you ever drank baby pee and almond milk side by side, you’d have a hard time telling the difference.

Coconut water - Coming from a Thai family, this is something I’m very familiar with. It’s the water that comes from young coconuts, and is very yummy! It’s a popular drink in tropical areas. You get to drink one a day!

Anyway, I won’t go too far into what the detox entails, as you can read about it here. But I will report back to you and let you know how it’s going! Here’s our day 1 meal plan:

7AM (or upon rising): Glass of room temperature lemon water
8AM: Herbal tea
10AM: (breakfast): Blueberry and Almond Smoothie
11:30AM: Coconut water*
1:30PM (lunch): Salad with Carrot and Ginger Dressing
4PM (snack): A handful of mixed pumpkin and sunflower seeds
6PM (dinner): Broccoli and Arugula Soup
*Make sure that the coconut water has no added sugar. Fresh is ideal but the brands Zico or Vita Coco are readily available.

I packed up Mr. Peng’s food for him to take to work (everything but the 6PM dinner). Here’s what it looks like:

w19769503

That nasty tub on the left is the blueberry almond smoothie. Doesn’t it sound delicious? Don’t be fooled by names. It’s a “plug your nose and chug” kind of drink. I’m still a little traumatized that I defiled delicious blueberries like that. Mrs. Coconut participated in this diet for a few days, and said it definitely made her body feel better, despite a couple foul tasting recipes.

I’ll report back a few days into it. Wish us luck!

Have you tried a detox?

My fiance LOVES sweetened chocolate almond milk, but the unsweetened stuff is kind of gross :(

GOOD LUCK!! We’ll be rooting for you!

I did an Herbalife detox but you can eat whatever you normally eat on that… you just take 2 pills before bed and 2 pills when you wake-up in the morning.

Interesting! I just read a blog post on this earlier today here: http://ohsheglows.com/2009/07/14/when-healthy-eating-goes-too-far/
It is a really interesting perspective. I’m curious to hear what you think!

Haha, as a vegan your groccery haul looks strikingly similiar to what I buy every week for grocceries. Obviously we (fiance is a vegan too) also eat lots of whole grains and protein like tofu, tempeh, seitan, and yes even the occaisonal boxed veggie burger, but that stuff usually lasts a while so I end up buying mostly produce and some odds and ends. We stopped eating meat, eggs, and dairy about 4 months ago and I have NEVER felt better!

@Mrs. Canary: The grapeseed oil is for the salad dressing… 1/4 cup per serving. It tastes so light… I’m going to start using it in salad dressings in general!

The fiance and I were thinking of going on the 3 day Fruit Flush by Jay Robb. We need to taste test some protein drink first though.

I cannot believe you don’t like Almond milk! I love that stuff and prefer it to milk and definitely to soy milk. I cannot stand soy milk. Although I have to say I’ve never drank almond milk straight…only in shakes or my cereal.

Good luck! Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

@Miss Hot Sauce: What brand do you buy? Some people were saying the sweetened or chocolate kind is good, but we are required to buy the plain kind. I saw some by Odwalla that looked pretty yummy, but it had lots of other stuff in it, so we couldn’t get it. This Pacific Natural brand Unsweetened is not great.

i coul dporbably live on avocados and salad and just plug my nose and suck down the rest. I would love to do this, just feel like it’s such a commitment.

I did a different form of detox diet a few months ago and it made me sick because I was craving carbs so bad! I was also really exhausted and always hungry.

How are you feeling so far?

I use the almond breeze unsweetened vanilla. You’re right- not so good. It is better w/ a little stevia or agave nectar though. If that’s allowed, try it.

Huh. That sounds interesting. =D I probably ouldn’t go through a detox, just ’cause I am not the type of person who will eat something that she finds disgusting, especially not for several days in a row!

I also get the GOOP emails and I always like reading them. I’ve made a couple of her recipes, although not the detox diet ones–the chocolate cherry cookies from a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I was considering doing this detox. I hope it goes well–I’m interested to hear your results.

Mrs Penguin, you might want to try the Blueberry Smoothie with coconut milk instead of the almond milk. The recipe mentions that is an acceptable alternative and I bet it would be much tastier!! Good luck with the detox!

I did a weeklong detox program at a yoga center once - it wasn’t too bad because someone else cooked all the meals and I just had to eat and do yoga! I second Mojito’s idea on the smoothie - coconut milk in smoothies is delicious! I just picked up some coconut water this week, but I still haven’t tasted it. I also love chocolate almond milk, I make a lot of my smoothies with it; but not allowed on your detox…:( I’m looking forward to hearing about how the detox is working for you!

Never tried one and I don’t think I ever could. lol I have a major texture issue when it comes to food. Meaning that I can’t eat things with the consistency of apple sauce, yogurt or something of the like. Foods of that consistency make me gag and nearly throw up.

I did this detox, I love 4-5 pounds and the salad dressing is awesome. I stopped the last couple days because I did not have a juicer, no beet juice or green juice for me. I did really like it and am contemplating doing it again.

Urk. I think I’d die after that first day! There is no solid food on there! And no, I don’t count salad as solid. Well, not green leafy salad anyway. Maybe if it had tons of chicken and stuff, but I imagine that rather ruins the point :-)

How long do you have to cope on this teeny food?

hmmm… this diet explains a lot. My mom is 60 years old, eats mostly only the foods included in your cleanse diet, and doesn’t look much older than 45. People tend to think that she’s my young aunt. Maybe I should get on board. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!!!

Detoxing is great, but it definitely isn’t for those who don’t have determination! Once every 6 months (well, its been a year now…I’ve been bad), I’ll do my own version for a week. You start with a 24 hour fast to “restart” everything (make sure to start it at night, so you have less time awake to be thinking about food). Then, for the rest of the week you eat only raw fruit and veggies (or very lightly cooked…steaming veggies takes away their nutrients). You can have servings of brown rice, and soy sauce to taste. No caffeine (that is a hard one for me, the first two days I do tend to get headaches…its crazy how much you depend on the stuff without realizing it). It takes about 2 days to get used to, but it isn’t so bad. And, honestly, you can feel all the toxins coming out of your body…I feel so good after I finish one! It is amazing to think of how much processed food we put into our bodies on a regular basis…

What I don’t understand us that you said almond milk tastes like baby pee! Almond milk is rich, delicious, and nourishing just like regular milk. You bought a sh*tty brand. I make my own at home in a blender in about 2 minutes. It is so rich, sweet, and delicious! - nothing like the boxed stuff. As with all foods, the fresher the better :)

To make almond milk just blend one part raw almonds with 3 parts water for 2 minutes. Strain with a muslin cloth into pitcher and serve! Please try this nutritious and super tasty milk and you may be a convert.
