About Mrs. Bruschetta

Shell Shocked

July 15th, 2009 @ 2:06 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

We have a thing for turtles.

It all started when I was 10, and our summer vacation — to the coastal New Jersey town of Sea Isle City — coincided with the Diamondback terrapin nesting season. Daddy Bruschetta and I first encountered a turtle wandering through our yard, and after shuttling her to a more private location to lay her eggs, we were hooked. For the remainder of our vacation — and during our subsequent summers in Sea Isle City — Daddy Bruschetta’s euphoria grew exponentially with each turtle we transported to safety (often stopping cars from crushing the poor things in the middle of the town’s busy streets), and he made sure I stayed involved in these endeavors.

The task at hand was “turtle hunting”, a misnomer we coined for our pastime — seeking out and assisting turtles in distress. After studying their nesting patterns, Daddy Bruschetta and I began an annual grassroots rescue effort.

During my first year on turtle “missions”, I served as little more than his assistant. He cornered the turtle, he picked it up, he carried it to safety. With time, however, I desired a more active role, and soon, I was eagerly stepping forward to snatch turtles out of harm’s way. Today, I’ll pick up any Diamondback (they’re not snappers, after all!).

To onlookers and passers-by, we were dutiful environmentalists; however, in reality, “turtling” was an essential, and extremely enjoyable, part of our yearly vacation which offered a way, albeit unconventional, of giving back.

Several years ago, with family vacations a thing of the past, I drove down to Sea Isle City on a day-trip to interact again with the reptiles and introduce Mr. Bruschetta to turtling. Initially, the mister exhibited the same hesitation towards plucking the terrapins from the street that I had 10 years earlier. Soon, though, he embraced this bizarre summer ritual. And for the past few summers, we’ve been selecting several isolated days over a period of several weeks for abbreviated missions.

We’re a team of three now, and the funny thing is, the dynamic when I’m with both Mr. and Daddy Bruschetta is constantly changing. Sometimes, I feel like it’s still father-daughter quality time, as was the case with our first-ever turtle excursions. At other times, though, I feel like the third wheel, eavesdropping on some serious male bonding, as the mister and my father discuss everything from baseball to politics. It’s a quintessential part of our summer now, and even with the wedding fast approaching, we found time to make three visits — in late May, mid June and early July — to continue our tradition.

(Trust me, there is a wedding connection — but you’ll have to wait for more details in a future post!)

Have you and/or your fiance joined in any of each other’s family rituals?

I am a Turle lover, too!!! I (living in FL) often see the poor things crossing the road, oblivious to the oncoming traffic. And down here, they can be quite large. But I always (and have my FI doing it now, too) stop and make sure they get to safety!

super cute post!

it’s not so much a ritual, but my fiance and his family (parents, sister, cousins, and uncle) have been involved with this youth leadership organization for the past forever, and when mr.v and i started dating, he drug :P me along to one of their seminars. for the first year or two, i felt like a total outsider, but as i got more involved and realized that whether i loved it or hated it, this organization was something extremely important not only to him but to his whole family as well, and i could either jump on the bandwagon and become involved myself or turn my back on it. welll, four years and five seminars later - i’m hooked. all of the events surrounding this organization have become one big family gathering that i am oh-so-excited to be part of! i’m so glad i decided to become invloved - it’s something we both totally believe in (supporting youth leadership) and it feels great to be making a difference with my future hubby and my future in-laws. oh, and if i hadn’t continued my involvement, i would have never met my maid of honor - and that would have sucked, lol.

Totally loving this ritual!! My dad is an avid fisher and FI loves it, so now my brother has to share my dad with him :) He goes every other weekend during the summer with my dad, and I know exactly what your saying about sometimes feeling like the third wheel! I ‘m just so glad they get along so well

My parents are making me feel so guilty - this is the first year we’re not going to sea isle because “they’ve got a wedding to pay for” (I’m the oldest and first getting married). That stretch of road right before the bridge is killer for the turtles!!! There are so many…my best friend growing up used to keep every single one and at one point they had 13! (one named after me because I jumped out of the car to grab it off the road!) Enjoy some Marita’s!

awe Bru, I LOVE this! I have a thing for turtles too, and this is so great to see. Too often people dont care about them because theyre “just animals” (ugh that makes me nauseous - and breaks my heart when I see one in distress or worse…) so its good to see that there are people helping out. I cant wait to see what the wedding connection is!!

Oh my gosh, my family has a thing for turtles too! My fiance and I now have a pet turtle together, just like my parents do. One of the best moments in our relationship was driving around the Jersey shore in Brigantine, seeing turtles crossing the road, and stopping to save them and put them back in the water!

I can’t wait to see how you tie turtles into the wedding. My only requirement for our honeymoon destination is that I get to see turtles :)

My dad and my man gang up on me! Mostly about money and my spending!! It’s incredibly cute actually, I love how they’ve bonded in their mutual cheap-ness (I can be cheap too–they just enjoy it as an art form!). They seem to think that together they can take my Mom and I. No way! :)

But more importantly—I LOOOOVE turtles too! And have almost wrecked my car many times in my rescues but they are so worth it. My Dad shares my love and always calls to tell me when he helps a lil turtle across the road.

So great that the three of you enjoy the same interests and can spend such quality time together!

Bru I need we were kindred spirits! I LOVE TURTLES! I have turtle stuff all over my room, I saved a dessert tortoise in high school and kept in my backyard for years (her name was Tessa) and on my 16th birthday a friend bought a sea turtle nest in my name and we camped out for it to hatch to we could make sure they all make it safely to the ocean. THAT is the BEST tradition EVER!
