I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

Altered States

July 16th, 2009 @ 11:32 am by Mrs. D'orsay

When I arrived back form England, I realized I had an important detail that I had left hanging, like a chad blowing in the winds of Florida: finding a seamstress to do my alterations.

I checked reviews on Wedding Wire, Yelp, Weddingbee, and The Knot, and found out there were two popular seamstresses that both capped their alterations at reasonable prices. Meaning, no matter what I wanted done, the price wouldn’t go above $200. Which was super sweet for this bee, since I’m asking her to hem the dress, take it in a few (hopefully more!) sizes, shorten the straps, elongate the armpit holes, create a crinoline, and make a bustle.

I foolishly thought I had remembered everything I needed to bring - shoes, undergarments, a veil. But I still hadn’t purchased my crinoline, and it had completely slipped my mind after even though I had just wrote a post about needing one! Luckily, my seamstress is much smarter than I, and suggested she make one and sew it directly into my dress. She had leftover tulle from another bride and just pinned it right between a few of the layers. This helped calm my fears that I would be a seriously hot sweaty mess dripping down the aisle in August. Instead of having 5 layers, I’ll now only have to worry about 4 (underthings, slip, satin slip, ivory lace). Huzzah!

With all the inspiration on the internet I started to have second thoughts about my dress.

Should I have gotten a ball gown? I didn’t really try any of those on, but what about that taffeta A-line one I saw… hmmm. Trying on the dress, which now felt like an over-sized potato sack didn’t really help ease my fears. But while the dress was being pinned to fit me to perfection, I began to feel the way I did when I tried on the sample. Simply perfect, just like me, but a little bit better.

I had been pretty undecided on my veil ’til I put it on with my dress during the alterations, but after I had it on, I thought, ‘So what if there are no other orchids in the wedding!’ Um… did I seriously just say that? Calm down, bridezilla. I go for my second alterations appointment next week, and after 2 weeks with Robert, I’m hoping she’ll have to take it in even more! I also received a very special package in the mail from a dear friend, and I can’t wait to show the hive what my “something borrowed” is!

Were you feeling more relieved after your first alterations appointment?

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one having second thoughts! I think my problem is I was 60/40 about the shape I chose vs. a-line…so when I see both, I still swoon! Anyone else feel like this?

Ha! Just to clarify: second thoughts ABOUT MY DRESS. I love Mr. Bruschetta completely, and that’s not gonna change. ;-) But whoa, that sounded wrong after reading my first comment!

Love it! Which one did you go to? I just saw Angie last month for my first fitting. I’m guessing you went to the other one since she’s in MD i think, and Angie’s way out in Fairfax. I love how cheap it is, and how great she’s supposed to be!

I love your dress — so pretty!

I haven’t seen my actual dress yet and every so often, I get dress anxiety, but I know it’s the perfect one for me!

We have the same dress! I wasn’t even doing a crinoline. Hmmm… Ah, August 8th isn’t that far off. I wonder if I have time for indecisiveness…

Yeah for loving your dress! Did you decide on a lace veil? When I found my lacy dress I put a lace mantilla veil with it and loved it! I’m having second thoughts now because it might be too much lace. You posted about that before, and I was wondering if you ended up going against the fashion rules and put a lace veil with a lace dress?

This totally made me laugh out loud at my desk: “important detail that I had left hanging, like a chad blowing in the winds of Florida.”

Well played, Miss D’Orsay! :)

Are you serious? There is a seamstress in MD that caps alterations at 200? Would that include hem and putting a corset back in my dress? Can you send me her name once you know if you’re satisfied????

Hello, gorgeous!! I LOVE YOUR DRESS!!

I had pretty easy alterations, but I definitely felt better after seeing it pinned back & actually fitting…

but I hear ya on falling in love with other dresses from browsing around the internet - namely, weddingbee! I blame it all on Miss CB…I wanted each and every wedding & bridesmaid dress she posted! :)

$200 for all that work is great!
I just had a alteration “planning” nightmare. I went to meet with a tailor in my Philly neighborhood- I need straps taken down and a bustle. I asked if she could add a piece of satin to take away some of my cleavage… she wanted to charge $450!!!!!!
So, I now I’m using the dry cleaner. Yes, you can think I’m crazy, but hey they are charging me $70 and they do great work all the time.
I trust them, but maybe I am a little nuts.

As funny as this may sound, I think the “tulle from another bride” is my tulle! I also used the same seamstress that is doing your alterations (I recognized the background in your photo) and at my recent fitting a couple weeks ago we took OUT some crinoline! You look Gorgeous :)
