Grow Grow!

July 16th, 2009 @ 4:54 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

Before last March, if you had seen me on one of the rare days that I wore my hair down, you might have noticed a glaringly obvious line where my highlights stopped and my actual hair color began creeping down around my ears. Normally I would be cringing, too. But the neglect was intentional! A week before we got engaged, I got my hair highlighted and chopped (thanks for the warning, Mr. Sunbeam)! They must have taken off something like 5 inches. Siiigh. Ever since, I’ve been watching the highlight line move down my head, silently cheering on the growth! Look at that sweet progress:

Day after engagement (May ’08):

Grow Grow! : wedding hair Hair1

NYE (7 months later… mmm, bridal diet whaat?):

Grow Grow! : wedding hair Hair01 Not bad right? You can sorta see the highlight line above my ear in the second pic. I finally caved this past March and got my hair trimmed and highlighted again because I just couldn’t take the hideous line any longer. I’m still trying to track the growth and doing what I can to help it along for my wedding hair plans! I was initially thinking GIANT BUN.

Which requires lots o’ hair. I also considered down and curly—a lady of the meadow style, which would fit in nicely with our casual tone and barn reception. Either way, I am keeping an open mind until I do my hair trials, just in case we discover something unexpectedly fantastic. Thanks to the hive, I’ve seen some growing secrets mentioned, and have taken note. Like prenatal vitamins! I’ve heard they don’t make you more fertile or anything, but they give your body a lot of good stuff, like lots of folic acid—rumored to be good for hair. So I think I’ll pick some up if I can remember to add it to my grocery list! It can’t hurt, right? I’ve also been told by FMIL Sunbeam that flax seed helps, so I’ve been sprinkling it into my baking endeavors and homemade granola bars just in case it’s true!

Are there any other hair growing secrets I should know about out there?

I don’t know any hair growing secrets, but I’m thinking you might still be able to do a bun no? It’s amazing what a hair stylist can do and I think they might still be able to do that big bun for you. I’ve had friends that your “after e” pic and had their hair up full looking like that they had long hair. =)

I take biotin for hair growth — and try to minimize heat styling. Would you consider extensions or fake hair to achieve your desired look?

do you have a hair stylist picked out yet? If so you might want to show them your inspiration photo and have them tell you how much length is enough. I didn’t have my trial until a few weeks before the wedding and found out I had too much length for my preferred style. I’d been stressing over trying to make it grow, grow, grow….and then ended up cutting almost 3 inches off the week before the wedding. Of course I have really thick hair…but I could have stressed less on the length had I checked with my stylist first.

my hair was about the length of yours in the second picture, but it’s incredibly thick. It was more than long enough for my wedding ‘do. If your hair is thick this is definitely doable

Biotin and Super B Complex! Also helps with nails and weight loss. Man, what a super vitamin!

My hair grows at an annoying pace. I take a daily women’s mulitvitamin that strengthens my hair & my nails - and keeps me healthy!

there was an article in vogue last year about great chignons and the secret was a hair piece. It’ll be especially easy for you since you’re doing a bun — a stylist can use it to poof up the size of your bun big time.

Haha I loved reading this post!! I can totally feel your pain…last Nov. I had hair down to my middle back, but needed a change so chopped it to a shoulder length bob…more recently (we are talking about two weeks before he proposed) I got even more chopped (to about chin length) and got highlights. Lucky for me my hair grows like a weed..it’s already grown nearly an 3/4′ since last month, but I am still worried that it won’t grow long enough for our Oct2010 wedding. I would think that if you use extensions as suggested you may be able to pull of the giant bun look….I have seen a friend do this where the “hair” was only added to the bun and you could never tell it was not hers!

If you are going for an up-do (like the gorgeous giant bun) you can always have some “fake” hair woven in to add a bit more volume and give you the illusion of length. So many hair stylists are using them now that they come in a ridiculous assortment of hair color shades. Good luck, regardless!

Oh, I have no tips (I have curly hair and it never goes past my shoulders for some reason)—-but, I think your hair is very cute long or short and I love that giant bun.

Side note: I would LOVE to know your homemade granola recipe :) Would you be willing to share with us?!

No growing tips, but in an effort to strengthen mine and cut the frizziness, I’ve gone to washing only 2x per week. (Ick! I know, but as hard as it been to get used to, I’m noticing a difference. The day I wash it, it’s a little frizzy, day 2 looks awesome, and by day 3, with the help of some dry shampoo, it’s not that bad). It’s definatley looking healthier.

I’ve been taking biotin, too. Have any of you noticed much of a difference?

@Curlysue: I’ll be sure to add sharing my recipe to the to do list too!

Thanks for all the advice/compliments! I’ll have to look into this Biotin.

Wow, I love that giant bun hairstyle! Inspiration for me! ;)

If you want to use flax seed oil most effectively, buy it in the refrigerated aisle (high end health food grocery stores sell it this way; maybe other places do, too?) and keep it refrigerated. I take it by the tablespoon followed by some orange juice (it tastes gross), but you can make it into a salad dressing and I hear it tastes great. Once you heat it (or store it at room temperatures), it loses a lot of its potency.

I love your long hair! Do you think you’ll cut it after the wedding? That hair inspiration pic looks great!

I had always heard that taking prenatal vitamins makes your hari grow, as well as makes fingernails stronger. Urban myth?
