Old, New, Borrowed & Blue

July 16th, 2009 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Old, New, Borrowed and Blue : wedding traditions Oldnew
I have something old - a vintage broach turned hair clip.

I have something new - (well, many somethings, actually :), take your pick)

I’m lacking something borrowed,

and maybe something blue - (I have a pair of blue VS ’bridal’ undies that I will probably wear)

Obviously, I Googled ’something borrowed’ to figure out what I should be looking for, and got this:

“Something borrowed” should be an item from a happily married woman. The borrowing will give the new bride good luck, (which is why the “loaner” needs to be a happily married woman). “Something borrowed” also reminds the new bride to look to her friends and family when she needs help.

What have you/will you borrow? Did it mean something special to you?

My grandmother’s pearls, who was happily married to my grandpa til he died the summer of 1958. I can’t wait to wear them to remember her

:-( So no borrowing something from my unmarried aunt and godmother?

I really want to borrow something that once belonged to my (now deceased) maternal grandmother…but would love to continue the tradition of bee-orrowing something from another bee as well!

I am borrowing my grandmother’s rosary to hold in my hands around my boquet. She’s been married more than 50 years - so hopefully that will bring me some luck & longetivity!

I borrowed my mom’s diamond studs. I have two piercings in each ear and needed something to go in the second spot. (I already had a set that matched the necklace I was wearing.)

I borrowed my grandmother’s “Oprah” pearl necklace!

It’s called the “Oprah” necklace because 10 years ago my grandfather (who was a jeweler) was invited to the Christmas gift special, and he brought that necklace to show!

I loved that my something borrowed had a unique story and is now a family heirloom!

How sad is it that I have no happily (and durably) married women in my family? My parents and grandparents are divorced, and the grandparents on the other side are deceased. FMIL may be able to lend me something (they’ve been married over 30 years), but I’m not sure what. We sort of have mis-matched tastes in jewelry. ;)

My “borrowed” is my grandmother’s pearl necklace given to her by my grandfather for their 5th wedding anniversary. Beautiful!

Is that incredibly strange that I never knew that you had to borrow something from a happily married friend?

Oops! I loaned my girlfriend an earring last year for her wedding - at the last minute we figured out she had nothing borrowed and pinned it under her dress. But I wasn’t married! I hope I didn’t ruin her marriage!

I’m borrowing my veil from one of my bridesmaids. Every bridesmaid in her wedding party has worn her veil. There’s something about the tradition of it as well that I like.

is it cheating to have something that is old, borrowed, and blue and calling it a day? I am borrowing from my gma, my great gmas blue broach like clip on earrings to use as shoe charms. I’m sure I can find something else for two of them if that is in deed being a cheater :)

I didn’t borrow anything. Whoops! It totally slipped my mind.

Actually I was going to borrow my grandmothers necklace but then my Mom dropped it and it shattered (it was a glass bead containing opals) the week of the wedding.

I hope to loan out some of my things though, maybe that will bring me good luck.

I will borrow one of my grandmother’s embroidered handkerchiefs. I’m also planning on embroidering my own handkerchiefs for the bridal party, so hopefully that will be a cool theme on our day. (we’ll see how the embroidery goes…)

I borrowed $1 from my happily married aunt! I put it in the bodice of my dress…it worked out perfectly! I already had all of my accessories, so this just made sense!

@Mrs. Penguin: I never knew either! And sadly, I haven’t even started thinking about what I’m going to do for my somethings list!
