About Mrs. Mary Jane

Suited Up

July 16th, 2009 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

Well, we can check one more thing off the list: Mr. Mary Jane’s suit. Last Friday, I received an email from my mom telling me Macy’s was having a 1 Day Sale. One of the heavily discounted items available? Menswear. Mr. Mary Jane was a very good boy: he agreed to go suit-shopping on a Friday evening.

We were originally unsure if we were going to buy an all new suit for Mr. MJ, or if he’d just get a new jacket to go with a pair of black pants he already owns. Once entering the store (and realizing we’d probably be better off if we’d actually had the pants WITH us), we decided to go all out and get a new matching pants/jacket set.

Mr. Mary Jane didn’t waste too much time deciding: he looked at a few jackets and decided he preferred a wider lapel over the narrower options. He then decided to go with a subtle pinstripe, rather than solid black. We had originally considered dressing Mr. MJ in a charcoal or medium-grey colored suit, but once in the store we both felt like the darker suit would be much more wearable for professional events (like job interviews) in the future.

Here are some photos. (Instead of a blue shirt and tie, picture a white shirt and [probably] green tie.) Those are the shoes he’ll be wearing, as well. They’re Bostonian Duralite Oxfords.

The price of Mr. Mary Jane’s outfit was the best news of all. A new suit can be a major investment. We were willing to make that investment because in addition to wearing his suit for the wedding, he’ll have it if he needs to be dressy for work. But our investment turned out to be less than I’d anticipated! His suit jacket, normally $325, was marked down to $129. With additional promotions we purchased it for $98. His pants, normally $125, were marked down to $60 and we got them for $48 after the promotions. His shoes were purchased weeks ago, but they were also on sale for $69 (marked down from $100). And I had a gift card (a benefit of having a Macy’s Rewards CC!) which made them free to us. The total full price for Mr. MJ’s outfit (minus shirt and tie, which have yet to be purchased): $550. The total price we paid? $146. I’d say that’s a good deal, wouldn’t you?

We chose to buy a suit because it’s a good investment for Mr. Mary Jane’s professional wardrobe. But if we’d been planning a more formal wedding (with tuxes), we’d have probably rented. Are you buying (or did you buy) your groom’s outfit?

We bought Mr. S’s suit. He already had a few and rarely dresses up for work, but he didn’t have one in the tan I wanted. It’s a good investment nonetheless I think, plus he looks really sharp.

That’s a great deal! Your Fi looks very stylish!

We ended up buying the Mister a (very nice) suit, since we’re grownups now and he may eventually need a nice suit to wear to weddings and such. The one suit he already owned was too big and hung like a sack on him. The new one is this great olive fitted suit with subtle pinstriping. He looks hot in it if I do say so myself. The tie he picked out is lacking in personality though.

@MissCamera: Same here! Mr. MJ had an old suit in the closet, but it looked kinda like a sack on him!

@MissCamera: and @Miss Mary Jane: I have the same problem with my FI! His old suit is a bag on him and he thinks his mom can “take it in”. I told him he just needs a new suit! HAHA I’m sure we will just be buying a nice suit for him to have so he has it—since he won’t use it for work, ever—he’s a mechanic. Too bad us ladies can’t get our dresses for $150 too!

Ooh, sexay. :)
That’s a great suit and a great deal! It really is a good investment. Mr. Spin had nothing in the way of a suit so he bought a nice black suit, grey trousers, a sports coat and quality dress shoes all in one go from MW when he was interviewing for PA school and it was totally worth it. Got him through all his interviews and all the weddings since then in style. ^_^

My fiance is going to buy a suit. The only suit he has, he has had since college graduation-oh 13 years ago! We also feel it is a great investment. And BTW, Mr. MJ is adorable!

Dang MJ, that’s a great deal. Not sure yet, but I think he wants to do a military wedding–no suit to worry about there.

We bought the hubby’s suit and asked each of the groomsmen to buy a grey suit of their liking (or wear one they already had). At first I felt a bit guilty about asking them to buy a suit but 1 already had one for work purposes and the other two were in similar situations where the suit they had no longer fit. We hit a sale at Macy’s as well and ended up only paying a few more $$ than Mr. MJ, we forwarded that information to our boys and everyone was set.

Now only a month post-wedding we’ve heard from both the guys who bought suits and each has had a situation arrise where they needed a suit (as has my hubby)…so now I’m guilt free :)

Cute pictures, I love how both of you pose outside to show us readers your outfits! We bought a suit as well, we didn’t save as much as you, but Bachrach was going out of business, so we bought a tan suit (he didn’t have one and will wear it again someday for a wedding or work) for 40% off. With alterations, I think it came to $250. I love getting deals!

Also, just had to mention it was thanks to you I found my wedding dress. One of your very early posts had you showing off that lace tiered BCBG dress. I loved it and searched on eBay for it and then won it that day for $100. :)

“suit up” love the How I Met Your Mother reference ;) We bought FH a suit as well. His is a 3 piece with a vest, which I hope will give it more mix & match options for future events. We found a steal on a Chaps suit at Kohl’s, gotta love those sales!

Good Lord. Macy’s won’t know what hit them! One day they’ll file for bankruptcy and site that a “Miss MJ robbed them blind”! Great job!

Our wedding was in our backyard, which overlooks the intracoastal waterway. We didn’t want tuxedos, because it was too formal, but our wedding also wasn’t a down-home barbecue….it was quite an elegant backyard wedding. We went with rented suits so that the guys did match, but weren’t so formal looking. It turned out great!

@pvaulter718: I try! But this one I have to give credit to my mom. I think she has Macy’s Sale Radar installed in her brain.
