Mrs. Mouse, Austin Age and Occupation: 25, Weddingbee Editor/Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Civil Engineer Engagement Date: December 19, 2007 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Barr Mansion About Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!

The Dude Does DIY!

July 16th, 2009 @ 3:43 pm by Mrs. Mouse

A few weeks ago I started a pretty simple DIY project. It all began when the Dude and I received a package from his sister, J-dawg. While she was visiting Austin for SXSW, she took a few pictures of us for a photography class she was taking. We just assumed they were for a project and would never see the results. Instead, eight black-and-white glossy photos showed up in our mailbox! I just knew that I had to incorporate them into the wedding somehow.

I decided on six of the photos to use and hit up my local Goodwill for some picture frames on the cheap. Two trips later, and I had these bad boys for under $15 total!

I selected frames in roughly the same size (about 11×7). I didn’t have to worry too much with exact size because of the generous white borders around the pictures. I was going for interesting textures, so that once I hit them with some black spray paint, they would still have some dimension to offer. I even picked out one faux-leather frame!

I laid out some scrap cardboard to protect our lawn, and then spray painted the frames, backside first. After letting them dry for an hour, I flipped them and sprayed the front. It only took one coat.

Little did I know, the hard part was yet to come. None of the pictures fit perfectly into the frames–the borders would have to be trimmed. I took a pair of scissors to the first two and almost cried at the horrible, crooked hack jobs I had given them. The photos and frames hung out on the living room floor for several days until I had a brilliant idea–hand this project over to the Dude! He’s a civil engineer, so he’s incredibly meticulous. Besides, I needed to study for the bar. So I set him to task with some scissors, Windex, and my finished frames.

Here’s the final product. I originally wanted to connect them to each other with wire and suspend them from something (not sure what) in the ballroom for our reception. However, I have decided just arranging them with the cake and cookie tower will be so much easier, and will still look great.

The Dude Does DIY! : wedding decor diy reception Dscn01302 Have you handed any DIY projects over to your fiance?

Super cute - I am doing something similar with the table names (vintage postcards inside) and Memorial table with grandparents, parents, etc. wedding pictures - which would be nice to throw over to FH to spray paint once i get them!
No DIY’ing by my FH - He seriously doesnt have one creative inch in him what so over. However, he is good at taking instructions ever so often - so thanks for the idea - just might consider it next time Im swamped! Which is always lately!

That’s awesome! My fiance did our invitations including design, printing, assembly and mailing! He’s significantly more creative and patient than I am.

They look great! My finace will be in charge of a lot of our DIY projects with me as the helper. He is an architect / designer, so a lot of the design aspects of our wedding are right up his alley. Plus, he is oh so meticulous, so nothing that he sets out to work on will ever end up sloppy. He will be setting up our wedding website and designing all of our invites / STDs / programs / menus / etc. I am here to help with creative inspiration :-)

Wow! I love how the frames turned out! And what a gift to have a partner so willing and able to help…I, too, consider myself pretty lucky with the FH. He’ll be in charge of executing the STD, invites, & website, since they’re all tech/digitally based. Can’t wait to get started on all those projects!

I’m trying to pursuade mine to make some table number holders out of wire. I’m looking into buying him a wigjig or a thing-a-ma-jig to use. The funny thing was he told his mom about the project and said I should invite my friends over to help . . . but he explained it was to be HIS project, pointing out that I asked him, “Do you think you could make something like this?” rather than “Do you think we culd make something like this?”

Haha, use “studying for the bar” as an excuse to get out of DIY projects! Love it! (Especially when you’re still on the Bee all the time! ;))

Nice job! My dude is fully hands-on. If I can give clear instructions, he’ll do whatever I ask. So far he’s sewn 160 napkins, made ~500 throwies, cut out 200 square recipe stickers, helped assemble 400 cupcake toppers, punched and grommeted (is that a word?!) 150 invitations, and assembled a whole mess of direction signs. And he keeps saying to me “give me a list, let’s make this a productive weekend.” He’s even taken off a week and a half of work before the wedding to take care of all the last minute things - like punching and grommeting the programs ;)

Great project! I have handed over our SAVE THE DATES…I am still in shock. I had this great postcard, fake Polaroid photoshop idea, with one issue…I don’t photoshop.

I tried to get a photoshop friend to help but schedules kept conflicting. So I stated talking to the honey about etsy and out sourcing the project. He wouldn’t hear of it! So a week later we have the photos picked out and they are in the middle of the photoshop process.

He is so proud of his work. Yay for honey input.
