Mrs. Labrador's Picture
Mrs. Labrador Retriever, Athens/Savannah Age and Occupation: 24, Student/Sports Reporter Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Physical Therapy Assistant Student/Future Dr. of PT Engagement Date: December 31, 2008 Wedding Date: November 2009 Venue: Whitfield Square/Savannah Station About Me: I'm working on my second degree from UGA (Go Dawgs!). I'm a self-proclaimed attention-w****. If it involves a camera, I'm in front of it! You'll never meet a girlier tomboy than me. I can go toe to toe with any guy on the subject of college football, and lift more than any girl in my gym, all without chipping a nail. I hope to someday be the only person you want delivering your sports news. My FI and I are the loving parents of three Labrador Retrievers (one of each color) and are planning a "Southern Romantic Charm" wedding in the beautiful, historic city of Savannah. I'm not extreme in anything except moderation... and wedding planning.
About Mrs. Labrador

Last Sunday my future in-laws and I stopped by Publix to pick up my cake samples. Boy were we surprised at Publix’s idea of a “sample” size.

Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc0423 It was practically an ENTIRE cake! I honestly thought I wouldn’t have enough to share with my FMIL & SIL when we went to try it. I was clearly wrong. Publix even threw in an extra flavor combo (half & half, aka chocolate & vanilla). It was around lunch time when we brought home our sample, so we undoubtedly gorged ourselves. Hey, it’s all in the name of wedding planning, right? ;)

Um, Mr. Lab, I am going to politely ask that you refrain from clicking the “read more” link below. K, thx!

As expected, I went with the red velvet and vanilla with raspberry filling, all in buttercream frosting. We managed to quit stuffing our faces long enough to wrap up some of the cake to take back to Mr. Lab when I visit him next week. Look how nom nom nom, er… yummy, they look!

Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc042301 The perfectionist dwelling inside me loves how the two flavors are alternating colors. It’s going to be pretty even after the cake has been sliced and diced! As for the updated price for the red velvet flavor I mentioned in Part 1, Evelyn put down the same $165 on my order form! I’m assuming she gave me the prices with the extra 20% included already. Nonetheless, it’s on the contract, so that’s what I’m paying!

So now that the wedding cake was all settled, I excitedly moved on the groom’s cake!

Some of you may remember my scare with Mr. Lab and his desire of a meat cake. Well, he assured me that it was mostly a joke. He definitely thinks meat cake is totally awesome and wants to try it one day, but he also said that he didn’t really want it for his groom’s cake. Whew! I’m was so relieved he felt that way!* It meant that I could move forward with my plans for a (surprise) cake that represents the pastime we both share a love of: Georgia football games!

I had a vision that our cake would be a replication of our beloved Sanford Stadium with a few added personal details. It would be presented soon after the cake cutting to the Georgia fight song and placed on a table full of photos of me and Mr. Lab at Georgia games.

Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dearflo Just some good-hearted fun with our arch enemies! :P

On the field would sit a “cake topper” of me and Mr. Lab playing some football, kinda like this:

I love how the bride looks like she’s tackling the groom. That’s what I’m talking about! And to play on the idea of us in the middle of a “game”, I’d have the JumboTron personalized with our “score”: LeiLani (me) winning 11 to 7 against Chris (Mr. Lab). The 11-7 score reflects our wedding date and the fact that Mr. Lab scored a touchdown and made his PAT, and I would have had to score a touchdown, miss the PAT, and have kicked 2 field goals OR scored a touchdown, made the PAT, and gotten two safeties OR, well… you get the point! Can you tell I’m ready for the college football season to start? And can you tell that I take competition seriously? ;)

Anyways, the first place we went for the groom’s cake was Custom Cakes by Minette Rushing. She is Savannah’s premiere cake designer. She’s even making the wedding cakes featured in the movie Miley Cyrus is currently filming in Savannah! But because of her talent, she comes with quite the price tag. She doesn’t sell any cakes under 100 servings or $550. I decided to still have a consult with her because I was saving so much with my wedding cake. So, my FSIL and I booked an appointment.

When we walked in the door, the first thing I saw was this:

Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc0424
Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc042401 I thought it was pretty ironic that I was there for a cake honoring the Georgia Bulldogs and ran into a gator! But I was helplessly in awe. I couldn’t believe this was a CAKE! I felt extremely confident that Minette would be able to carry out my vision flawlessly. I mean, look at some of her other work on display around the room!

Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc0422
Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc042201
Piece of Cake Part 2: There's Nothing Finer in the Land : wedding cake Dsc042202 But alas! After the consultation, she sent me the price for what my vision would cost: $1200 plus tax! YIKES. I have expensive visions. For that price, I would have to put the cake in a glass box and display it in my living room for the next 50 years.

So I went back to the search. I happened to run across a Sanford Stadium cake online and found out that the baker doesn’t live far from Savannah. Thank goodness it’s the weekend, so I actually have the time to give her a call. Isn’t this cool?!?

So stay with me. This cake saga isn’t over yet!

*Oh, and just because Mr. Lab was a good boy (hehe) about the meat cake, I’m planning to make him one in honor of our fourth anniversary in October! :D

Those are beautiful cakes! My fiance saw the meat cake on an episode of “Who’s Wedding Is It Anyway?” and I quickly told him that our venue allows no outside food.. so meat cake averted!

@Carbon Girl: I 2nd Go Gators! :)

I think it’s such a cool idea to do a UGA cake, even though I’m a Gator. :)

Can’t wait to see how your cakes turn out!

Love the cake idea! We wanted to do the same thing for our wedding - but ran into the price problem you did. After much searching for a lower price and total failure - we went back to our dream vendor and asked for other options. She came up with this little doozy for us and we loved it!

It was almost 1/2 the price but gave us the feel that we wanted. I loved the cake topers she made for us as well! It’s just an idea, but if you are still searching for better priced alternatives - we loved this one! Now don’t hate just because we’re USC ;)

OMG those cakes slices are huge! I want some! I love the football cake topper - so much better than the ones where the groom is frowning and the bride is dragging him away from his hobby. I can’t wait to see your cake! Mmm. Cake.

Our grocery store actually gave us three 1/4 sheet cakes for sampling. And we did this twice! Sampling six 1/4 sheet cakes is probably the reason why I gained so much weight the past year!!!

Alonn the “meat cake” idea, did you check out Publix “Cheeseburger” cake? I got that once, and it looks incredible!

Geez, all the gators are out today. Where are my Dawgs?!?! lol :P

@Emily: I’m not hatin’! You guys just have some awesome California talent and recruiting. I didn’t like the Leinhart-era, but other than that, mad respect. (Besides, I would have been born in Cali had my mom & dad not been stationed in Germany at the time, so I consider myself a Cali-girl by proxy!). That cake is awesome btw!

@Karma007: Haha, no, haven’t checked that one out! I’m fascinated by cakes that look like other foods though! :)

I ran into the same problem - I wanted to do a replica of Notre Dame Stadium, but it was just going to be way too expensive. We ended up not doing a groom’s cake but did still incorporate ND by naming the table #’s after places on campus.

Also, I went to high school in GA, and I think about 90% of my graduating class went to UGA, so I’ve seen my share of UGA cakes - I think even if you can’t do a stadium, you could do a bulldog, or a sheet cake of the football field, or a helmet cake - there’s lot of options!

@Jessie516: Haha, too funny!

@kitty25kat25: I know, I just have my heart set on the stadium. If I can’t find anyone to do it in my price range, I’ll definitely have backups!

@Hayley: The groom’s cake is totally self-serving! He’s going to love it, but so will I!!! lol
