Stop the Presses!

July 17th, 2009 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Remember how I had decided to take the cap sleeves from my dress and use them as an embellishment around my waist instead? While in the dressing room, I convinced myself I liked this (even though I’ve always been into more simple things). The oohing and aahing from my mom and the seamstress had me going. But, I got home and looked over the pictures again and again, wondering if this was really, well, me.

This hint of beading added a silver-y tint to the overall look that I thought I could get past. You see, I’m much more into warm, golden tones, but then I started looking for jewelry and realized gold earrings just weren’t going to jive. This silver hurdle was kind of throwing my whole mojo off.

Then, while flipping through my J. Crew catalog today, I stumbled across this silk sash.

(source)

And it just made sense. Look how cute you can tie it? And I only imagine it looking twenty times more gorgeous on a wedding dress than on these everyday clothes.

(source)

(source)

I immediately called Saks to see if the waistband had already been finished and, sure enough, it wasn’t. I told them to hold off.

No, the sash from J. Crew is not as formal. And, I may not even end up liking it once it arrives in the mail. But it totally falls under soft, romantic, and feminine and fits all of the inspiration boards I’ve been using as guides to color and decor and feel.

And, if I decide not to use it, I can look for one I like, or have one made via Etsy, or just go without, which I love, too.

The other upside is I can wear all the gold I want.

Need a reminder of what my dress looks like without the embellishment?

What do you think? Do you like the flower sash? The waistband embellishment? Or completely without?

Did you happen to see the Today Show Throws a Wedding this week?? The bride wore this same dress! But with the cap sleeves. I have to say I kept thinking to myself that the dress would look better without the sleeves and sure enough seeing your pictures I am sure you made the right decision to go without the sleeves! I also agree to go without using them as a sash as well! That dress is so perfect as is. Also you look much better in the dress than the girl on the Today show did!

I love your dress…and I have to admit, I wasn’t keen on adding the sleeves around the waist…it looked super pretty, but added a level of glitz that didn’t seem like it fit with your style etc. So, I preferred it without…the flowers are really pretty and seem to totally fit with your theme/look…but you’d have to see it actually on the dress and see that the ivory (or white) matches…but has lots of potential! If it doesnt work, it looks amazing with nothing added! :)

I happen to like the waistband embellishment, but if you dont think it’s you, don’t do it. The flower sash looks super cute too though! I think it may look even better used as a headband in your hair, and leaving the dress plain.

Your dress makes me speechless. I think that the flower is MUCH better than the beaded embellishment, and that says alot coming from me because I LOVE beading! Again, your dress is beyond fabulous, with or without any embellishment!!!

beautiful dress… you just look stunning. i like the sash, but not sure how it will go with the dress, but if you don’t like it with your dress you could always use it on a rehearsal dinner dress or some other wedding event!

I love your dress. Very pretty.

Like some before, I like the original idea, but you have to love it.

why don’t you get Saks to make you a removable sash from the cap sleeves? And then you can try on both sashes with your final dress and see which you feel.

Depending on the lighting during your reception, if you have lots of candle/dim lighting, the silver might end up getting some warmth from the reflections.

I have actually tried on the flower sash from J Crew and I think you are going to be happier with the dress without it. I think the dress is just gorgeous just as it is and it doesn’t need a thing more than some beautiful earrings and shoes!

I have to say, our dresses are very similar. I have Amsale Tyler (I sound like a broken record bc I mentioned that before-sorry!) and the shape of the top and the skirt/fabric are the same. And that dress does have a sash with a flower (actually 2) on it http://www.amsale.com/bridal/amsalecollection/071207/0712523.shtml

That being said, I think the flower will be gorgeous! Cant wait to see pics :)

I’ve been waiting for one of these sashes to go on sale! I love it, but I’m not 100% sure how to wear it for everyday stuff, which is holding me back.

If you have a student or teachers’ ID you get 20% off and free shipping though!

The sash is lovely, but your dress is stunning no matter what you do! It’s easy to tell you’re not set on the cap sleeves’ beading, so skip them! I think the flower fits better with the light, airy feel of your dress.

I love the dress on it’s own but I also love the sash—-hmmmm, I say if the sash looks even more amazing then go with that, otherwise just the dress. It’s so beautiful and romantic :)

I want it without ANYTHING!!! Love that dress plain (cf. the Today Show bride from this year). PS, I have a question about the straplessness of that dress. Remember the sample you tried on? That looked straight up strapless. Why was it that your dress came with sleeves and your seamstress said that it couldn’t be done strapless.

I also think that the sash might look good tied in your hair.

I like it without anything really. I love the little belt from JCrew, but it’s such a pretty dress, why mess with it?

It’s the Today Show dress. I thought of you when I saw that!

Here’s just one more idea. Since the sash is removable, you could leave it off during the cermony and take some pics. Then put it on for the reception and take more pics. Just a thought.

I have to repeat the Today Show comment - when I saw the bride walk out I thought ‘OMG that’s Miss Cowboy Boot’s dress!’

Looked very pretty on that bride - but I suspect it’s going to look even better on you :)

@heather25: Hey! When I tried on the sample, I had tucked the beaded cap sleeves into the dress. That’s actually the last shot in the post, above. The seamstress wasn’t there when I tried on the sample and the saleswoman said they could “definitely” do it strapless. When the dress I ordered came in, the seamstress saw how the back came to two points meant for straps. Without straps, it looked like something was missing. She said it couldn’t be done strapless, but really, she just had to tuck those points down and sew it flat across the back. There’s a tiny dip under the arm which strapless dresses don’t have, but it’s not noticeable so I said, make it strapless anyway!

I would order it, and see how you like it. You could always have the more formal (without sash) for the ceremony and then for the after party tie it on! I think its totally adorable and fits your cheery nature!

I love the sash but I seriously think your dress is beautiful on its own. I think a beautiful pink flower or maybe the flowers from the sash, would look beautiful in your hair. Maybe with some pink jeweled earrings like this:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27321699
or the addition of a cute ass wrap for that feminine look:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25234948

these are from my favorites on Etsy…love them and think they would look amazing on you and your dress! Either way you will look awesome. Love Love Love the dress!

I too had this idea of embellishing my gown — as though the polka-dots weren’t enough — a beautiful blush flower fashioned after a coral peony from Twigs and Honey. Never wore it…on my wedding gown.

I think the sash would be a distraction from your dress which is so light, airy, just plain gorgeous to be frank. I think the idea of adding a blush/golden tone flower to your hair would be a nicer and more complementary look to the style you’re going for.

We’ll have to see once the sash arrives! I think it might look pretty, but you never know how something will mesh till you try it on. I do feel like your dress needs a little something on the waist, though.

Holy moly, the dress looks fabulous even without anything! But, I love love love the J Crew sash! I can’t wait to see pictures with all options available. And, even if the J Crew one doesn’t work out, I’d totally be keeping it to wear with something else…its fab!

I think it’s gorgeous without anything — but I’d be interested to see it with the sash. I’d probably go without, but it depends on what all your other accessories end up being.

I am with you on this idea! I have the same sash from J. Crew and going to take it to my fitting to see how it looks with dress. Can’t wait to see what you decide.
