About Mrs. Sunbeam

Sunny Honeymoon

July 18th, 2009 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

Choosing our honeymoon location was not an easy decision! We wanted a place with wine, good food, beaches, and plenty of relaxing. One place we always pictured ourselves honeymooning was Europe. Two years ago, an internship made it possible for us to spend some time together in France. One of our favorite stops was Nice, so we set our sites on the French and Italian Riviera. Look how beautiful the towns are! With great wine and cheese, to boot. Ti Amo Italia!

We initially thought a two week trip would be perfect! We searched for flights, train tickets, car rentals, even bike tours. Needless to say, it added up quickly, since we really wanted to travel on our own. Then we discovered most of this coast was not going to be a beachy time like we had in France, because most of this area of the coast is, well, a cliff.

A beach is quintessentially honeymoon right?

So we thought we’d check out more “beachy” areas. My coworker has gone on the most amazing trips to places like Bali and Maldives, seen below. They took these with an everyday digital camera.

So amazing. After researching Bali and overwater bungalows—swooooon—Mr. Sunbeam wasn’t sure he was up for ten days in Indonesia, since the cost was at least equivalent to Europe, and there didn’t seem to be much to do. And at that point, we had started house hunting.

Since this is “the time to buy a house”, we couldn’t ignore all the for sale signs going up in our neighborhood. After some serious thought, we decided to cut our honeymoon budget in lieu of a house fund. Luckily, that still gives us money to go somewhere special. We looked into the Napa Valley. A few days at a really nice hotel with a spa, wine, and reservations at top restaurants like Gary Danko and The French Laundry (if we could get in) sounded pretty good.

We’ve always enjoyed going to the wine country, since it’s just outside the city, but that was also a turnoff. It won’t feel like much of a getaway in Napa. If we wanted, we could go here any given weekend, and I’d probably want to stop home to visit our furball if she’s only 45 minutes down the road. So, we tucked this plan away as a backup.

Finally, we decided on Hawaii. We’re going to do a 6 day trip, mostly spent in Kauai. Everyone on the West Coast says San Francisco is so close to Hawaii, that you kind of have to go while you’re here! It might not have the five star restaurants or fine wine and cheese we had hoped for initially, but it’s just far enough to get away and merit a shorter visit. It’s beachy, full of activities (if we want them) ;), and who can turn down a couple’s massage on the beach?! Not. I.

Not only that, but some of our friends have been there, loved it, and have great recommendations to pass along. And as one more added bonus, the hotel we are staying at is opening the day we arrive! I love the thought of a fresh bed waiting for us! The foodies in us made the biggest compromise with this trip, so we plan to end the honeymoon with a one night stay in Napa, hopefully after an uber fancy meal the French Laundry, thanks to a gift certificate from Momma Sunbeam. As for Italy and Maldives, we know we’ll see you soon! Hopefully by then we’ll be leaving behind a house we can call our own.

Too funny that you considered Italy (where we’re honeymooning) and ultimately selected Hawaii (where Sister and BIL Bruschetta went)! Can’t wait to see your recap pics!

What hotel did you end up picking? I spent a lot of time there while I was little (hop skip jump from Seattle!) and it’s very pretty.

Hawaii is great! Relaxing, tropical, very honeymoony! We spent two weeks in northern Italy, including the Italian Riviera and Lake Como. It was definitely nice - and will be there waiting for you!

My family has a condo in Kauai, so I’ve gone there every summer for years. It is the most beautiful island, and although it is a compromise from Europe, I think you will be pleasantly surprised! For some amazing food, check out Cafe Coco in Wailua, right before Poipu. It’s a diamond in the rough! :)

I think we’re going to Hawaii for ours! Growing up in Seattle (hi, Miss Sapphire!) my family was lucky enough to go three times. And as for the food… it may not be as fancy-gourmet, but oh my goodness luau pork is amazing. And piles and piles of fresh fruit :-)

We were thinking of going to Kauai for our one year anniversary in September. Where is the place you’ll be staying, it might be worth checking out for us!

We’re having a hard time deciding on a honeymoon locale, too. We keep going back and forth with many ideas. With September being hurricane season, we’ve been trying to stay away from the Caribbean; we just didn’t want to risk it. Good choice with Hawaii!

That looks so relaxing right now and how could you pass up being the first to sleep in the hotel room!
Right now, the thing I’m most looking forward to before our wedding is the night before when I sleep in THE most comfy bed at the RB Inn across the street from our venue (and where The Ducklings are getting hitched).

We went to Kauai for our honeymoon, and we loved it - we stayed in my grandparent’s timeshare at the ResortQuest Islander at the beach, so we got a steal on accomodations, and we didn’t want an all-inclusive, so it was actually the perfect hotel for us - it had a pool, a bar & a beachfront locale (& restaurants & shops about 50 feet away).

There’s definitely lots of cool stuff to do in Kauai. Definitely check out Princeville Ranch, we went ziplining there, you can also do horseback riding, etc. We also did a boat tour through Captain Andy’s which was really cool; and we went on a chocolate farm tour at Steelgrass Chocolate Farm. There’s definitely lots of cool activities, and of course, beautiful beaches!

Oh, and you must eat at the Hukilau Lanai in Kapaa - TripAdvisor said it was the best restaurant in Kauai, and they were definitely right - it’s one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been too actually.

You’ll have a blast in Kauai. If you’re not scared of flying, definitely do a helicopter tour of the island. It’s the only way to see some of the most gorgeous parts of the island without involving a multi-day hike.

Kauai is the place that convinced me I wanted to live in Hawaii for a little bit. I did, five years ago, and it was amazing. Take surf lessons in Hanalei, hike to Kipu Falls for an amazing rope swing into a deep swimming hole (or jump off the waterfall), and definitely hike or take a boat along the Nepali Coast. It’s unreal.

This sounds awesome but make sure you get adequate trip insurance in case (worst of worst possibilities, I know) your hotel isn’t finished on the day you arrive!

We are headed to Kauai for our honeymoon, too, and are really psyched about it. All the photos of Na Pali coast look gorgeous.

Miss Sunbeam–can you share some of your friends recommendations for good restaurants or fun things to do?

I second all the recommendations to see the Na Pali coast - we saw it through our Captain Andy’s evening dinner boat cruise, and it was amazingly gorgeous!
