About Mrs. Star

So after getting all of your wonderful feedback and opinions on our polka dotted cake options (thank you, ladies!!), I had a meeting with our cake baker. I showed her some of the same pictures that I showed all of you and told her what I liked about each one. Like some of you suggested, she thought that it would be best to create an amalgamation of all of the things that I like about the cakes I’ve seen and make it into a unique Mr. and Mrs. Star cake!

Please excuse my TERRIBLE drawing skills, but this was the only way I could think of to give you a good visual of what we came up with. If our actual cake isn’t 100 times prettier than this drawing, I’ll be shocked.

Polka Dotted Cake - Decision Time! : wedding cake Img 413

Like I said, please don’t judge.

We decided on decorating the bottom and top tiers with white frosting and black polka dots, and the middle tier with black frosting with white polka dots. This serves two functions:

One, I get some visual interest by having the middle tier be different (a la the green polka dot and striped cake I showed you!) and we also won’t have an entirely black cake, which didn’t sound appetizing to me. We are also planning on having the polka dots be differing sizes: some larger and some smaller, also to help give it some visual interest. Our baker will also be making two oversized fondant bows and attaching one to the corner of the top tier and one to the opposite corner of the bottom tier. The way she drew it was much cuter, believe me, but her drawing was on lined paper and didn’t have colors! This lets us incorporate both the bows (which a lot of you loved) and a little bit of our purple. We’ll also have our adorable cake topper on top, which I have yet to show you (but I will soon!). What do you think?

Did you have your cake baker make a replica of a beautiful inspiration photo you found or did you make a “frankencake” like we did?

=) I’m glad that your baker was so willing to amalgamate all the ideas from your cake-spiration! I didn’t vote in the poll on the other post because I was of a similar mind — why not combine all the good points into one cake?! And hooray, now you are going to have a rockin’ unique, Mr. & Mrs. Star cake for your wedding. =)

be careful if your middle tier is going to be black buttercream (as opposed to fondant)– black colouring will stain everybody’s teeth!

@cakegirl: I’m not too worried, since we have lots of extra cake and if some people don’t want to eat the black cake, they won’t have to! Also, there are lots of foods that aren’t attractive to eat that are still yummy enough to eat anyways! We’ll have a teeth-checking buddy system :)

I think your cake is amazing, but I do have to second cakegirl’s sentiment about the black middle tier though. My fiance and i went to a wedding last year and everyone’s mouths were black from the frosting. It was not a great memory from the day. I know you said that people could choose but not everyone will know about the dangers of the black frosting and some might still end up with black teeth. i do love your cake - I just think that this is something to think about.

Love it! I saw the CUTEST black cake stand at HomeGoods over the weekend. I couldn’t justify buying it (which is shocking for me!), but wish I could go back, buy it & send it to you! Well, I guess I’d need to know the diameter of your cake - but still, it would have rocked.

that’s all ;)

@Mrs. Quiche: Oh, Mrs. Quiche, it pains me to hear you say that! Just wait until my next post! :) Thanks for thinking of me, though.

It is so cute!
I have to warn you, our groom’s cake was black, and it turned your mouth a black/teal/green color! It looked like we had smeared black lipstick on our lips. We had to floss and brush our teeth to get rid of the stain! Luckily, they never cut the groom’s cake at the wedding and we discovered the issue the next day at home. I am going to blog about it in our recaps because the pictures are so funny.

We did have buttercream, so hopefully fondant won’t have the same effect! Definitely talk to your baker about though, just to make sure.

Another person chiming in on the dangers of black food dye, be it in frosting or fondant. If your guests eat anything dyed black - frosting or fondant - their teeth/mouth/lips WILL turn greenish black and it’s really unattractive and embarrassing.

If you’re set on a black tier, it has to be covered in fondant, and it needs to be removed from the cake before the guests eat it. While you might not like fondant (many people do not), it’s really the only safe way to do black on a cake.

I’m a semi-professional baker (I have a day job but I bake for events on the side) so I know a thing or two about the perils of bright/deep colors of food dye. :)

For what it’s worth, my cake is entirely black and all four tiers are going to be covered in fondant. I hate fondant, but it’s the only way to go if I want a black cake. I have instructed my caterer to remove the fondant before serving the cake so that our guests mouths don’t get dyed.

Miss Star, please please please take our words of warning to heart and do not use black frosting!!!

xoxo, a fellow New York City girl and professional baker (and September NYC bride)
