Crowning Glory : wedding veil Bridedu

(source)

Okay, I wont be wearing a crown or a tiara. That’s just not my thing, and my dress doesn’t really warrant that kind of accessory. I am talking about a veil! I know, I know, “What about the hair flower, didn’t we cover this?!” I’m definitely still wearing the flower for the reception, but I might wear a veil during the ceremony. I had been considering a veil on and off but thought with the extra cost I’d probably just forgo it. But then I started noticing Momma Sunbeam casually asking here and there, not if I would get a veil, but when. She even gave me a little extra something just in case cost was holding me back. I know, what a great mom! So I thought, it can’t hurt to look, and made a stop to Priscilla of Boston in SF to try on some veils the day I picked my dress up from the seamstress.

I was so surprised how much I started loving them!

Initially I thought with my lacy, layer-y dress, a veil might just be too much. Especially one with lace edging. Then I tried them on and now I might just love the lace veils! Let me share my trip with you in pictures.

The fingertip lengths seemed to suit my dress the best because the veil ended shortly before the layers in the back started. Veil #1 has lace and a little bling that sits just above the end of the toile.

The second veil under consideration has a pencil edge. It’s very plain, so it doesn’t compete with the dress at all but still gives me that bridal look!

And our final contender. This veil has a wide strip of lace along the bottom, as well as a few lacy bits here and there.

It’s the morning after and I’ve officially recovered from the sticker shock of these babies. Some were just as  expensive as my dress! Ahhk! Now I’m stuck on deciding if I should get a veil, and if so, which one to get! At this point I am just over two months out, so the clock is a-tickin’. It’s go time.

I know there are a lot bees with lace dresses in the hive - did you get a veil to go with your dress? Or did you find that it was too much with all the lacy goodness of your dress? Should I go for it? Or, is there too much going on?

I’m in a similar situation - my dress has a lot going on, wasn’t sure I wanted a veil, but my mom definitely wants me to have one.

Personally, I like the pencil veil because I don’t think it “competes” with the lace of your dress.

I really like the style of the first veil, but I got sticker shock trying on veils at my bridal salon, too. That’s when I decided to make mine! Or maybe have someone on Etsy make it?

I really like the first one the best. The sticker shock is tough, but making a veil is pretty easy. Especially if you want something simple. If you mess up and hate it, you’re only out $20 in supplies so if you have to you can still buy one but it might be worth trying first.

I had a lace dress and stuck to a simple 1 tier veil with small swarovski crystals, but that is only because the lace veil I had to have was sold when I came back for it!! The lace veils really are pricey, maybe shop around for less expensive lace veils? If your going with something like #2 I would definitely shop around for a cheaper veil. Ugh I am not help, I like #1 out of all your choices.

I’m not wearing a veil, but it’s more for personal (feminist) reasons.
It is a difficult choice, though, with a lace dress. Ultimately, I think that if you like a veil, you should wear it. I think having confidence in the clothing (and hair accessories) you wear is more beautiful than anything!

I love #1, but I vote for #2, simply because I don’t think you need any more lace, and I think a lace veil might be too much. I second what Miss Star said - definitely check out Etsy!

i LOVE the look of a veil…there’s just something so romantic and bridal about it. As for which of these I think looks best, I’d have to go with the pencil edge veil. it’s soft and beautiful and doesn’t compete with the dress at all but just adds to it. I think that with a lace dress with as much detail as you have (it’s BEAUTIFUL by the way!) the lace edging on the veils does compete a little bit. Also - as for the sticker shock…I’m with you on that one! I bought my veil at http://www.occanseydesigns.com/ and I HIGHLY recommend them! Kathy is so helpful, so detailed, and so flexible. She’ll totally custom create your veil. If you do decide to go with one of these you can just send her the pics and she’ll create a veil just like it for probably a 1/4 of the price! You can pick the lace, the edging, the cut, the fullness, etc., etc. I actually got a cathedral length veil with lace edging just across the bottom and slightly up the sides….it turned out so beautiful!

good luck deciding! :)

I wore a mantilla with my lace dress. I’m with you on the sticker shock! A veil from my dress designer would have cost 3 times what the one that I ended up with did, which wasn’t cheap either. That being said, I love your first option! :o)

I think you should go with the first one! It has the look and feel of your dress but it isn’t too much. I think the pencil veil is too plain to go with your dress. And the third one is just way too much lace!

i think the first one is perfect for your dress, but i would definitely check other bridal shops or etsy for a less expensive option!

The first one is gorgeous! Not too much, not too little. I love veils though, so I’m def. biased towards wearing one :)

I just have to say… I. Love. Your. Dress. *drooooool*. I think I’d go with the second one. As much as I love lace, your dress is rocking plenty of it already!

oh, i love the first one on you too. to me, #2 is a little to plain for your dress. i have a lace dress as well though, and can’t decide either…

I personally like the second choice, but that’s just because I’m not a huge fan of lace-on-lace. When you have an all lace dress, I think a lace veil can overwhelm things sometimes. But that’s just my silly opinion :) In the end, it should be whatever creates that look you love!

I like #1 and #2. #2 would be my personal choice, but I’m all about things that are understated and simple. If you go with lace, #1 compliments your dress beautifully. I also agree on the etsy / DIY options if you want to save some $$ :-)

I love the first one! It has just the right amount of lace to complement your dress without competing with it. And that profile shot of you in front of the mirror is just too darn pretty!

I think choosing a veil is much like choosing a dress - you just know. I tried on quite a few veils before I found mine - one that set off my dress just right and reduced me to a fit of silly bridal giggles. On one hand, my dress was under budget, so I was able to choose a higher-priced veil. But on the other hand, you’ve already invested in your dress, so you want to put the same time and thought into the rest of your trimmings :)

I think if your going to do a veil, you should do the plain one so it doesn’t compete with your dress.

For anyone looking for an inexpensive veil, Mrs Meatball linked to a great website that has wholesale pretty much anything for weddings. http://www.thebridalwarehouse.net
