Frocks For My Friends

July 20th, 2009 @ 9:30 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

I’ve gotten a lot of questions and comments about my bridesmaids’ fabulous dresses, so I thought I’d take a quick little break from my recaps to let you know how that look all came together.

It was basically born out of laziness. I knew that I did not have the desire or the energy to pick out a dress for my girls that they would all like, and even want to wear again. So instead, I passed the buck to them!

Now, originally, waaaay back when Mr. Powder Puff and I first became engaged, I decided that I wanted my girls to wear navy dresses. Well, as many of you know, your wedding starts to take on a life of its own after planning is underway, and navy dresses did not fit into my scheme that was taking shape. So I axed that idea and instead told my girls to pick a brightly-colored dress that was no longer than knee length.

Wah-BAM! Gorgeous, right?

So here are the deets on those dresses. We’ll start from the left in the above picture. Kristyn, on the far left, is wearing the J.Crew Juliet dress in vintage blue. The next girl in line, Jamie, is wearing the J.Crew Sophia dress in sweet cantaloupe (currently on sale!). Keri, on the right side of the photo is wearing the Behind the Clouds dress from Anthropologie. And finally, on the far right, my sister and maid of honor, Kate, is wearing the J.Crew Erica dress in tea rose (also on sale!).

I have to admit, I was nervous as to how this was all going to come together. But in the end, I’m so happy with the end result. And most importantly, my girls are happy because they have dresses that they can actually, truly wear again.

Did you take a chance with your bridesmaids’ dresses?

i LOVE them! wow :)

my girls are wearing jcrew silk taffeta dresses in “burnished olive” (sounds gross, i know) but they picked their own style…so two are wearing the delores, one wearing the lorelei and one wearing the corin.

Oh wow I love how the colours look together. Did they colour coordinate or did it just work out that way?

Again, I love love love the multi-colored dress. I think myy plan will be to give my bridesmaids a color, and let them choose the dress.

@MollyMosby: Half and half. I let them choose whatever color they wanted, but I had them moniter who had what color so they wouldn’t repeat.

I’m letting them choose, just within the color palette of the wedding (white/cream/silver/black) - Even though there are a few naysayers that have commented to me, pics like yours reinforce that I’m doing the right thing!

I told my bridesmaids to pick one of three colors and a dress that was around knee-length. They all ended up with the same color and I haven’t seen all their dresses yet, but I am really excited to see them together!

That’s wonderful! mine all picked the same dress out of the 5 options we had chosen together. Knee-length was forgiving whether they were short or tall, and it has thicker straps so no one feels uncomfortable, including grandma!

Your girls look fabulous! Did they communicate at all in their dress shopping? Because they look co-ordinated despite all wearing totally different dresses. Nicely done!

I am obsessed with how awesome that came together! i wish I could get that to work with my BM’s!

Ahhh I want to see more pics of the blue dress! I currently have selected the vintage blue silk chiffon dresses from J Crew…I’m letting them pick whichever style they like in that shade, and I have been dying to see some real pics of people in a dress in that color! Bring on the pics!!!! Can’t wait to see more!

I love the idea of having the MOH be in a different color than the other BM. I never thought of everyone having their own colors. These pictures show each girls personality and character and they each seem comfortable in their own skin (and not uncomfortable in a lime green taffeta gown, because one night you thought it would be a great idea.) Its true! Laziness pays off :)

This seems to be one of those ideas that looks gorgeous in wedding magazines but feels impossible to implement without a professional! Props to you, Puff! The girls look awesome and your wedding looks like it came out of a magazine!

It totally reminds me of the wedding in the Sex and the City movie… each bridesmaid in a different, bold color. I love it!
