Mrs. Star's Picture
Mrs. Star, New York City Age and Occupation: 22, Actress Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Casting Assistant Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Ceremony: The Kraine Theatre, Reception: Midtown Loft & Terrace About Me: I’m a professional actress who’s always had New York City in her blood and I'm finally getting the chance to make a home in Manhattan with my fiancé, my dog, and my big dreams! I love polka dots, craft projects, Dunkin’ Donuts’ iced coffee, and anything sparkly. I’m having a blast planning our elegant/dramatic/New York City/acting-themed/largely-DIY wedding and am thrilled to be the youngest current Miss Blogger!
About Mrs. Star

As I’ve mentioned, my cake baker and I were able to incorporate my favorite aspects of several different inspirational polka dotted cakes into the one singular cake that will be the unique Star cake. There was one picture that I loved that I just couldn’t get out of my mind, though, and that was this one:

Polka Dotted Cake - Taking a Stand : wedding cake Polkado01

I really think the cake stand makes this cake. So I did a Google search for black cake stands and came up with this one that I adore:

Polka Dotted Cake - Taking a Stand : wedding cake Cakest

The trouble is, not only is it not 12″ across, it’s almost $50, which I really can’t justify adding to the budget at this point.

My search on Etsy didn’t really yield anything, either, although I’m not ruling out an alchemy request to try to get someone to custom make me one. I don’t really care what material it’s made out of (whether it’s ceramic, wooden, etc.), so that could be an option.

I finally headed back on over to the CoveredInCrafts blog where I first found the cake picture to see where she got her stand, and as it turns out, she made it! She says she took a pillar candle holder and somehow attached it to the cake board. I’m not really sure how to do that myself or where to find a black taper holder, but I’m thinking of trying!

So what do you think, hive? Should I keep searching for an affordable stand to buy, put out an alchemy request on Etsy, or try to make one myself? Does anyone have any links to share with me?

Maybe ask Taffy if you can borrow hers- I think it was VERY similar. OR check out her tutorial.

You may want to see how big Stiletto’s cake stand is (she just blogged about her card box and mentioned that she’s not using her black cake stand). Not sure if it’s bigger, cheaper, or if she’s willing to part with it, but it’s worth a shot!

If those two suggestions don’t work out for you, I think you should try to make your own AND put a request on etsy. That way, if you’re trial doesn’t work out, you will have some options to work with. Good luck!

Here is a link to a diy stand. They used a plate and vase, but you could substitute a candle holder.

I’m a DIY bride, so I would say make one! =) But, if you don’t feel confident, I might suggest taking theeself to Etsy!

I bet if you get creative you can make one yourself…it seems like it wouldn’t be the hardest of tasks…but hey I don’t know for sure! Good luck!

hmm.. I say make one. just buy a candle holder with the shapes you like, a round piece of finished wood, screw together, and spray paint. it may be harder than it sounds.. but it seems so easy at the same time. good luck!

I did an alchemy request for one and I was told it would be really expensive just to send it to me. But you and I could probably work out a deal with mine …pm me :)

Ebay!!! The inventory changes daily, so you might have to wait a couple of days to find “the one” but seriously, there are some great options on there and lots for easily under $50.

@Miss Stiletto: I LOVE yours (umm, we found the exact same one??), but it’s less than 12″, right? Our bottom tier is 12″ :(

@Lillindy: I hadn’t thought of Ebay, I’ll check it out!

@Samantha: Samantha, I might just buy that one! Great find!!!

@Selina: I think I saw this awhile back before I decided that I needed a black stand. I might go this route, the trouble would just be finding the right candle holder and a large enough plate. I stopped by Pier 1 today (which I thought would be my best bet for a candle holder), and nothing good :(

@Miss Star: Yah, less than 12″ :( I had the same problems…terrible time finding a black stand, and then couldn’t find one big enough (I need a much bigger one than you do, I’ve finally just decided not to have one)….good luck in your search!!
