About Mrs. Mary Jane

Green and Sashy

July 21st, 2009 @ 6:12 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

I bought the fabric for my new sash over the weekend! If you recall, my dress came with a piece of black satiny ribbon attached to it:

And that’s just not fitting with anything else in my or Mr. Mary Jane’s attire. I also wanted to lower the sash just a bit, since it’s supposed to drape around the natural waist, and as a tall girl, it currently drapes around my ribcage.

Off to Jo-Ann’s I went! I decided I wanted to find something with green in it to match my shoes.

I was really hoping for a punchy green and white pattern of some kind, but I ended up preferring this solid “Spinach” green taffeta.

It’s a pretty good match for my shoe, isn’t it! It’s not a perfect match, but it’s really damn close. When your shoes aren’t dyeable, you take what you can get. And if it shows up funny in pictures, I can color-correct it in Photoshop later. (This is my mentality about pretty much everything related to my wedding day look!)

I didn’t want a seam, so I bought two yards of this fabric. Something tells me I’m going to be using up scraps of spinach-colored taffeta for the next 10 years.

I have no pattern for this sash, but I’m pretty good at sewing simple projects. Once I get to work on it, I’ll share the results!

Are you sewing any of your wedding day accessories?

I’m sewing my invitations : )

I don’t know if I’m good enough to sew anything that I’d actually wear, though.

(too bad you can’t edit comments, or I would have added…)

I think the green will look really nice with your layered skirt. Can’t wait to see it all together!

How tall are you? I’ve been having that “supposed to tie at the natural waist but winds up at my rib cage” thing with nearly everything I’ve bought recently and I’m only 5′6″. And on the 6′ tall models in the pictures it seems to hit them at the natural waist. I just don’t get it!

I sewed a ribbon on my TTD dress & added one to my RD dress :) This wedding really brought out a love of ribbon that I never knew before…

Great color match! I went to AC Moore and bought a ribbon that almost matches my shoes. I am trying to figure out what to do with it that involves little sewing and comes out looking good.

(Ms Mary Jane, did you wear the shoes to the store to find a matching fabric, or just brought a shoe in? :D I had to wear the shoes - I felt too silly otherwise)

LOVE the green!! I, too, am sewing my own green sash for my dress, and bought an obscene amount of fabric for one little sash… but it’ll be worth it for the lack of seams!

the color match looks great! I actually think it’s cool you’re having *slightly* different shades of green combined. can’t wait to see the finished sash!

Am I the only Bee who doesn’t have sewing skills? Geeeeeez.

Can’t wait to see the finished product! And don’t worry about not being a perfect match with the colors. Wearing them that far apart from each other will mean that they’ll seem to match! :)

I love your dress! I just replaced my black sash with a nude one instead. I’m not very crafty so I actually brought it to a tailor instead. Can’t wait to get it back.

Don’t forget to make the sash very slightly curved so that it will go round your waist properly! I’m sure you can find easy patterns online. :)

@chicagobride092010: I’m 5′10″. Once I got this dress, it was clear that the model wearing it online was quite petite. It hangs well over her knees, for example, whereas on me, It’s barely over knees!

@Miss Labrador: Well I haven’t done it yet, so reserve your judgment until you see the result (Which could be horrifying!) I’m certainly nowhere near Miss Poodle’s talent!

@flutterby: That never even occurred to me! The current sash is just a straight ribbon…

I think the two colors of green will look wonderful together. If everything is exactly the same shade it’s boring and has no depth. I think it is going to be great!!! Good luck with the sash. I have faith that you can do it!!
