The Motherload

July 22nd, 2009 @ 6:10 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

I’ve written about my garage sale habits before—those bright orange, yellow, or green signs luring me from street corners on Saturday mornings. This past weekend, though, I hit… The Motherload. In between brunch with friends and an afternoon hike, I turned into a small pocket in Santa Fe following three signs. The first, less than exciting, but the second? A vintage store-owner purging her life of all her old finds.

Everything was in stellar condition. Her driveway (which was very big) was full of vintage kitchen goods and beautiful crystal dishes; racks of embroidered, flared, and flowy cotton; a rack taller than me swirling with adorable aprons; and much, much more.

Here’s what I walked away with (for a total of $28):

The Motherload : wedding accessories cake dress P101000011

A blush-colored pearl clutch. There are a few pearls missing but I love it anyway.

(That’s my dress fabric around it)

The Motherload : wedding accessories cake dress P101001023

A beautiful vintage junior bridesmaid dress. We’ll replace the lavender ribbon with something in our scheme.

The Motherload : wedding accessories cake dress P101000012

The front two cake stands. I’m trying to build a collection of 12 for our pie bar.

I mentioned to the woman running the yard sale that these items were for my wedding. She was so thrilled she gave me five little goodies for my bridesmaids as gifts, as well as a bunch of vintage fabric. I’m using this (along with other fabric I’ve collected) to make napkins, tablecloths, and for other pops of color.

Have you checked out garage sales for goods for your wedding? What have you found?

Amazing finds! I’m kinda jealous… I’ve never had good luck at garage sales around here.

I used to love garage sales when I was a kid…. =) Haven’t gone to any in a long time, though.

I love plunder parlors (garage sale with a store front)! Here in DC, I have two in my neighborhood: Rough n’ Ready and Miss Pixie’s. It’s soooo fun to look through. Flea markets are awesome, too.

Finding things like you did is really exciting! It’s the thrill of the hunt, and when you find neat, one-of-a-kind things, it’s even more fun!

I love your finds!!!

LUCKY You! I’m doing a similar kind of dessert buffet (not all pie but 12 stands total) but I’ve been going back and forth between wanting all the stands to kind of match or to go for a sophisticated mix-match. I can’t wait to see pics of it all set up and in action!!! Your wedding is going to be so lovely!

I have about 12 cake stands similar to the ones you have - all ivory, white, or clear glass that I’ve been collecting from garage sales, goodwill, and flea markets for our centerpieces - our date is 10/3 and I see your’s is in October as well - let me know if you would like some of them! you can email me at hratclif@gmail.com

Oh I am so jealous of your finds! Speaking of vintage kitchenware, I long for old skool tupperware. I have two small 80s orange mixing bowls I adore, but I want so many more!!!

I found the lovely slip for my wedding at a thrift store and I would have paid lots for it!
