About Mrs. Sunbeam

What’s Red, Ivory, and Grey?

July 22nd, 2009 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Sunbeam

Our wedding colors! I sort of hinted at this here and there, but thought it was time for a color post. There are so many inspiration boards out there that choosing colors can become quite a task (remember my swatch pile?!). One excellent source is Snippet & Ink. This was the first board that caught my eye from S&I.

I love the neutrals of it all, with hints of gold and grey. If our venue was at all white, or had the white swags like the upper right image, this might have worked, because I feel like the lightness of it all is really the main appeal. Since our venue is 100% wood from top to bottom, it might be hard to pull of this light airy feeling, and a punch of color would be nice to dress my girls in.

Then, I came across this similar board that had a bit more color with softer golds, pinks and browns.

So pretty! This had me picturing our men in brown suits, and the ladies in peach or gold. Unfortunately, Mr. Sunbeam did not want to put the guys in anything but grey or black, regardless of how pretty this inspiration board was! I guess it could have worked in grey, but everything is just so warm in those images, that I knew I could find something that would suit us better.

Finally, the board that won us over:

What's Red, Ivory, and Grey? : wedding color schemes Pallet

It’s sort of light and airy like the first, had grey for the guys, and yet, had some warmth to it. This board became our jumping off point. We decided to use medium and charcoal grey, ivory or light peachy colors, and for a burst of color—red. I had promised my MOH a while back I wouldn’t make her wear pink, and the boys were already wearing grey, so we added red to the scheme for a bit of color and a touch of fall. I used the last image to generate a color palette here, then made my own adjustments in Photoshop.

This is roughly our color palette:

Here is the color break down: my BMs are wearing various shades of bright reds, and the men will be in charcoal grey. As for flowers, I going to do all creamy colors to brighten things up. All of our stationery has medium grey fonts with red accents, and the plan is to use muslin bags decorated with a red stamped image as OOT bags for our guests. To try to lighten up our reception space as much as possible, we’re sticking with a lot of cream/white linens and decorations with red or grey accents here and there, if possible. Our color choices aren’t too exciting or exotic, but we’re keeping it simple and I think it will pull together nicely for our big day! Did I mention the barn we’re partying in is red?? Purely coincidental!

Where did you find inspiration for your wedding colors? Did you make an inspiration board to keep yourself on track?

beautiful! I am using lots of creams, golds, and burgundy - with hints of slate blue and sage green from vintage maps. I have been struggling over having another standard color for the men’s suits, etc, but couldn’t think of something that would look right… no black for sure. I was leaning towards khaki or cream of some sort, but I love the grey! Thanks!

I love the idea of having a color pallette instead of only 1 or 2 colors! Looks great!!!

That’s such a unique color pallette - I’ve never seen those colors combined before, but it sounds and looks like it will be beautiful! Is it another coincidence that Grove City College’s colors are crimson? :)

We used that last board too. :-) We ended up with pewter and blush. No pop of red for us. We’re also in a venue that’s wood from floor to ceiling. Here’s hoping it all works!!

Oh i love it! I’m really loving grey in weddings right now. What if you added a few red anemone’s (red flower with black center) to the bouquets? That could be gorgeous.
