About Mrs. Sunbeam

A Long Awaited Yes!

July 23rd, 2009 @ 1:33 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

Some of you have asked us to share our engagement story, and I am happy to oblige! After nearly nine years of dating, the big day had arrived. Here is how Mr. Sunbeam told the story on our personal wedding site, with a few added details by me:

A Long Awaited Yes! : wedding proposal Dscn10504

“At the time of our engagement, Miss Sunbeam and I had been dating for almost nine years, so I figured I should try and come up with something pretty special. I wanted the location to be quiet and intimate, but epic and breathtaking at the same time.

After a day of scouting locations, I planned a picnic lunch proposal on the side of Mount Tam. The view was perfect. You could see the city off to the left, the ocean straight ahead, and the beaches down below. I know she was suspicious Saturday morning when I told her to pack an overnight bag, but I tried not to let on. We drove up to Mt. Tam for our picnic and sat under a small cluster of trees, talking and snacking for a while. When it was time to pack up and go, Miss Sunbeam hopped up to her feet and turned around to gather our things. When she turned back, there I was on my knee, ring in hand, shaking like a man. I struggled to find the words I had rehearsed over and over. Every time I began to say something she interrupted me, yelling, “What are you doing!?” and laughing uncontrollably. I proposed between giggles. She said yes, and we popped the mini bottle of champagne I had hidden away.

We had a camera with us and attempted to capture the moment by balancing it on a rock. Needless to say, the camera took a tumble! After a quick stop to Best Buy, the engagement getaway was back on track. We drove up to Napa to wine taste and find a bottle of wine to “cellar” and commemorate the day. We ended the evening with a romantic dinner and stayed the night at an inn nearby.”

Celebratory dessert is always in order!

Miss Sunbeam here! I had assumed if he did propose that day it would be over dinner, so when I turned around with picnic junk in my arms I was really caught off guard! I dropped everything and started laughing uncontrollably. I wish I would have settled to listen to his proposal, but I had a major brain malfunction going on! He really put some time into planning a special weekend for the two of us! I can’t wait to be Mrs. Sunbeam!

Since you can’t really see it in the other pictures, here is my e-ring. Mr. Sunbeam told me he bought the diamond in February since he found one he liked, then looked for the perfect setting to put it in. I’ve always wanted a princess cut diamond, and the simple single diamond ring really suits me! He did a great job.

Did you suspect something was up the day your FI proposed? If so, did you completely misjudge when it would happen and end up caught off guard anyway, like I was?

cute story!!! I was caught completely off guard…and I almost ruined it for him by being a debbie downer and not wanting to stop playing rock band or get out of the car at the (very well chosen and sentimental) place he had chosen. Like you, I laughed, and kept saying “ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?” over and over until he was like “uh, still waiting on that yes.” hahahah. love it :)

I wish I had some sort of idea that my fiance was going to propose! LOL I can honestly say that I never, ever thought that he was going to ask me to marry him the day that he did! I expected it to be at least a year down the road—I guess I was wrong! But I would not have had it any other way at all!!!

I was completely thrown off guard too, which was hysterical since we’d been together 7 years, and I knew the ring was in his possession.

I was taking my assistant out to celebrate her promotion with another co-worker, and the plan was to come back to our apartment afterwards to meet our dogs. During dinner, not only was I complaining that it would never happen, I was also texting the then boyfriend to make sure that the house was in perfect order. Horrible, I know. At the end of the meal, my assistant says that she’s tired, and that they’ll just play with the dogs another time. I feel awful that the fella was spot-cleaning the place, and headed home.
Once I got there the lights were all out, and the dogs were in red bowties, which is a bit formal for our pups. He was on the balcony and had recreated one of our first dates. Turns out that “celebratory dinner”, was a plan to get me out of the house so he could set up. My co-workers were in on it the whole time. I was in complete shock, and it was one of the best moments of my life.

That was sweet! Our story was very similar in the “I thought something was up but it didn’t happen so I started to clean up the meal and turned around and he was on one knee” way! haha!
I love that you found a bottle of wine to hold on to and a token of the day. That’s so cute!

“Shaking like a man” –> that’s hilarious!

Yeah, I definitely thought something was up, but not a proposal!

My FI proposed on a hike, too, and despite me knowing he had the ring (and bugging him for months about when I might see it… sooo bad) I was still totally shocked when he pulled it out! I was positive I’d know when he was going to propose, cause he’d be acting all nervous and obvious, but he played it super cool!

Haha…I too was taken completely off guard…It was the last thing I had ever expected on a Monday afternoon trip to the dog park…I won’t go too far into detail, but you can read my post, all I will say is that I laughed too and cried and laughed and jumped up and down!! Oh and asked him if he was serious maybe 5 times!

Cute story. I knew my fiancee was going to propose, but I’ve never told him that — he likes thinking he surprised me! :-)

I was going to comment on the “shaking like a man” line too! Haha, how cute!! I figured it was gonna happen even though he claimed it was part of my birthday present, but I was still surprised with how it actually happened!

What a sweet proposal story! You have a keeper.
I too laughed uncontrollably and kept asking him, “Is this serious? Is this really happening?” Poor guy got really psyched out. I totally expected it that week but not at the moment sweaty from a three mile bike ride in 100 degree heat we’d stepped on the beach to cool off. I literally was thinking to myself I wonder how he is going to do this when bam he was on the ground.

I had it kinda figured out-he made me promise to climb the mountain at his parents before we had even left for vacation. Of course not 2 hours after arriving at his parents, he wanted me to go. lol. I should also mention I wasn’t allowed to go to his place of work for over a week because “there were people he didn’t want me to talk to.”

@KellyV: I said the same thing! Isn’t it sad that the first thing out of my mouth was “Are you serious” not “omg” or “yes”, lol
