About Mrs. Swan

Mini-Moonin’ It

July 23rd, 2009 @ 12:14 pm by Mrs. Swan

I am sure that I mentioned before, but we’re not really sure if and when we’ll be taking a full-fledged honeymoon. Between lack of ample vacation time for me and no job yet for the Mr., we’re still hoping that we can find our way overseas for an adventure and some relaxation sometime soon in the future. Instead, we’ll be taking some time away after the wedding to Newport, Rhode Island.

Why Newport? Well, it’s got the makings for an easy and low-cost minimoon, since it’s Mr. Swan’s home state.

Here’s why:

  1. A free place to stay in Mr. Swan’s family apartment house there (don’t worry, they don’t live there. They live in a separate town)
  2. We can borrow one of the family cars
  3. Newport is not that far of a drive from NYC, and we’ll be driving there with the FFIL and FMIL Swan the day after the wedding
  4. It looks like this in the summertime:

I will admit to you that I was not very excited when Mr. Swan suggested we go to Newport. For one, in addition to being Miss Swan, I like to also think of myself as Miss Adventure. I’d already been to Newport for an afternoon with him, so I kinda figured that maybe we wouldn’t have much left to see. Also, going to Rhode Island is not really all that new for me, since I’ve been going there to visit friends who lived there for years even before I’d met Mr. Swan. To me, it was just going to be another trip to Rhodey (Rhode Island brides, please forgive me!).

Anyway, I recently started to research our trip, and I’ve actually started to get really excited about some of the things we’ll be able to do there. For one, we’ll get to see fabulous homes.

Of course, one of the most well-known aspects of a visit to Newport is the collection of gorgeous mansions. You can take tours of these old stately homes that have been restored to their former glory. These “summer cottages” (yeah, y’all these are just the summer homes) were built by wealthy and prominent families like the Vanderbilts. I think I’ll enjoy a little history lesson on our trip.

Newport also has wonderful restaurants, especially those featuring fresh seafood. I actually went to the one pictured above my first time in Newport. They’ve got really good chowder. I’m marrying a born and raised New Englander, so I better like me some chowder. :)

Newport is also known for its harbor and sailing activities. Some consider it the sailing capital of the U.S. (maybe even the world) because it’s hosted the America’s Cup sailing race so many times. Mr. Swan wants to take a harbor cruise for the first time since he was a kid. He spent most of his childhood years on a boat in the summertime, especially around the Newport area, so it will be fun to be able to share this experience with him.

Unfortunately, we will miss the Newport Jazz Festival again this year. It’s too bad, because I’d love to see (or hear, I guess) Chaka Khan, Branford Marsalis, and even Tony Bennett. Maybe next year!

Are you minimoonin’ it too? Where are you going, and what aspects of your trip are you looking forward to?

Also, does anyone have any Newport recs for me? I know Mr. Swan is a native, but it’s always cool to hear others’ picks. Thanks in advance!

I love New England — haven’t been back since finishing grad school in December ‘06, but really can’t wait to visit again, hopefully soon after the wedding!

We’re doing a mini-moon, too. It was a matter of vacation days (for me) and money. We’re going to Cape May, NJ for a few days and staying at a bed and breakfast. I’m looking forward to lounging on the beach.

We’re going to go to California and Costa Rica in December for Christmas.

I love Rhode Island! I’ve never been to Newport, but I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time. All the pics you posted are beautiful.

We’re mini mooning in Newport too! We’re gettign married there and thought we’d just extend our stay. We love it there, it’s where we met.

There are sooooo many amazing restaraunts and night life. The mansions are unbelievable. If you go to the Breakers, you’ll be on my college campus :)

I have a million recommendations for Newport. Depending on the vibe you want.

For a fancy dinner, I love the Newport Restaraunt Group including The Mooring, 22’s and Castle Hill (gorgeous place for drinks on the lawn over looking the water and Newport bridge), for Italian, we love Sardella’s. For touristy/popular, Brick Alley, the Red Parrot, Clarke Cooke’s are all good choices. Off the beaten path- Nory’s on Broadway (Amazing and fairly inexpensive). The Atlantic Beach Club is a cool place to go during the day, its on the beach and has music, volleyball, drinks and food. For sandwiches, we love Bliss! Its organic and delicious.

The Newport Winery (in Middletown) is fun for wine tasting. They have a cute sandwich/bakery shop next door with amazing soup. The wine tasting is $5.00 and you can keep the glass. They also do tours. Newport Storm Brewery also has tours/tasting for UI think $5 on Fridays. My fiance went a few times.

Also, Thrd Beach is a more secluded beach in Middletwon about 5 minutes away.

I have so many more idea,s if your looking for soemthing in particular, PM me! I’m so excited to see what you end up doing. I’ll definitely be checkign out the recaps! :)

Ooo and if you love Fudge, Country Kettle on Thames is pretty famous.

I absolutely love Newport.

LOVE it there! I used to have a family home in Quonnachantaug (Quonnie) and loved visiting Newport. The mansions are beyond amazing- do the tours. And for a quick lunch or dinnertime excursion check out Watch Hill- I used to love shopping there, just a quaint little area. I miss living in NJ/the northeast :(

I used to work in Newport….Visit Rough Point, Doris Duke’s Newport mansion. It’s a separate organization than the rest of the mansions, but definitely worth it– they have an exhibit of designer clothes of Doris Duke’s on display now and it’s incredible!

Also a funky spot to eat dinner– Salvation Cafe on Broadway. And if you are there on a Saturday, go to Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth ( about 10 minutes from Newport proper)– they have wine tastings and jazz concerts on Saturday afternoons. Newport Polo is on Saturdays too!

I second the dinner at Salvation Cafe! It’s a favorite spot for my boyfriend and I. Very ecclectic decor, really friendly, and AMAZING fusion food. The menu changes seasonally and there’s always something amazing to have! I live about 40 minutes from Newport, you could always take a day/night trip to Providence to see a show, have dinner, maybe catch Waterfire? *Look up Waterfire online, it’s amazing and so romantic!!

Sounds fun and relaxing! Fresh seafood is always a “vacation” thing for me, so it sounds like a great mini-moon locale!

We are not beach people, and we didn’t have 5 thousand dollars (or more) to spend on a honeymoon- so we are going to Cape Cod and Lenox Mass! We are staying in Bed and Breakfasts. We have never been to New England before, so we are soooo excited to see the history and the beauty of New England in the fall!
I love that you are doing a similar mini-moon!
All of my friends were like “What?!?! huh???” when I didn’t say we were staying at an all-inclusive in Cancun… nice to know there are others!

Oooo! I’m actually kind of jealous. Newport looks so cute, and I think it’s a great place for a mini-moon. I’m a big fan of relaxed, easy honeymoons. Mostly because all I see myself wanting to do after the wedding is a lot of nothing.

I don’t have any rec’s for ya, but I just wanted to comment and say congrats on your decision!

Okay, so I’m a long-time creeper but I couldn’t resist commenting on this. Newport is fabulous! I went to school not too far from there. Once you’re done checking out the old mansions, check out Ocean Drive and see the new ones! If you go far enough, you’ll hit Breton State Park which is an awesome little beach where you can park and hop around on the rocks and check out the tidepools for critters. If you don’t mind a small drive, you can pick up a whale watch off of Cape Cod or somewhere closer and see some amazing wildlife. I went on a whale watch around this time last year, and we saw tons of whales and dolphins breaching and doing all sorts of other neat stuff. Lastly, if you feel like getting out of Newport for the day I totally recommend Providence. WaterFire is amazing, and I’ve gotten the best mexican food of my life at Tortilla Flats by Brown University.

I hope I helped! Enjoy the RI sun and make sure you get plenty of chowdah!
