About Mrs. Sprinkle

On the Iron Bridge We Kissed

July 23rd, 2009 @ 11:47 am by Mrs. Sprinkle

The story of our proposal still makes me shiver with excitement. Reliving it every time I tell someone (or write about it) makes me more and more ready for the actual wedding.

Mr. Sprinkle and I had been talking about the possibility of marriage for a long time. We had read the marriage books, taking the time to go slowly through each chapter and answer all of the questions (even the really ridiculous ones). We had talked to all of our parents about the idea of it happening soon. Little did I know, the proposal plan, which was a total surprise to me, wasn’t a secret to anyone else! Meaning: everyone in my life knew about the proposal before it happened, and NO ONE told me! My mom knew (and so did all her coworkers, apparently), my friends knew, our hairstylist knew, my boss knew! It’s hard to imagine that no one ruined the surprise.

The lowdown: it was a freezing, cloudy, early, early (EARLY!) morning. We had just arrived in the Bay Area the night before to celebrate the holidays with my family and Mr. Sprinkle convinced me to get up early for some “sightseeing”. How he got me to agree to this, I will never know. I grew up in the Bay Area, have lived there most of my life in fact, so there are very few sights left that I haven’t already seen many times. I think I felt bad that he had never walked across the Golden Gate and said, “Let’s go!”

We arrived. It was drizzling, no one was around, and we started walking.

We pointed out everything (including crisis hot line plaques) to each other and laughed. Mr. Sprinkle seemed nervous, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. We got halfway across the bridge, and took pictures the whole time. Then he got down on one knee and popped the question. I think my initial reaction was, “Why didn’t you tell me!” followed by “Yes!” This was immediately followed by tears and a guy riding slowly by on his bike, turning around, and riding back again. Mysterious. Then it snowed (well, flurried). It was wonderful! And amazing! And freezing! We walked back to the gift shop and bought a tiny bridge pin as a souvenir. Then Mr. S told me that I had to call our good friend G, as she was expecting a call. This is how I found out that everyone already knew. What if i had said no?! He would have had a lot of explaining to do.

A few minutes after the actual proposal, giddy and windswept and slightly wet from sprinkles (!) and flurries.

Was anyone else completely surprised by their proposal? Or maybe you were the one doing the surprising?!

Mine began with my guy saying it was “Your Day”. He took me to Belmont Shores for a gondola ride, then we went to eat and he proposed on the beach at sunset and managed to get our best friends there for it as well. He had also told everyone as they were supposed to meet us at a sports bar afterwards.

What a wonderful story and a great proposal location! My proposal was sort of a surprise–I didn’t think he’d do it exactly when/where he did. However, I suspected it would happen while on that vacation, especially after my sister (World’s Worst Secret-Keeper) said “Next time I see you, you’ll be engaged!” as we were leaving. ;) Oops. Anyway, thanks for sharing your special story.

Yay! Love the story; glad to hear when other girls are surprised, as I was too, and no one seems to believe that it could’ve actually been a “surprise” !!! =D

I’m always amazed at surprise proposals. I’m terrible with surprises. I had an idea, but I also had an idea about 20 other tiems he didn’t propose, so even with my inklings, I was a bit surprised.

I know what you mean about everyone else knowing about your impending engagement. Two entire weddings knew about mine–I’m pretty sure my doctor even knew. I still don’t know how no one let it slip.

Haha! That’s great! I wasn’t 100% surprised because of the way my FI was acting, but once we got home from our vacation I also found out that everyone knew…even our bankers and some cashiers the the grocery store. lol.

your ring looks just like mine! haha I was totally surprised too. my fiance told me he couldn’t afford a ring for a long while (we were still in college) and so I tried to put it out of my mind.

but on our two year anniversary, we were going out to dinner and my roomie at the time told me she bet he would propose that night without actually knowing anything about it. I was soo surprised!

So cute with it snowing afterwards!

My husband’s proposal was a total surprise. He planned a surprise prom-themed birthday party for me because I never went to my prom in high school. All of our friends showed up in suits/tuxes and prom dresses. He had this huge backdrop of shooting stars to take pictures in front of. He had the photo from my 9th grade school ID blown up on a cake. I was given a tiara, septer, corsage, and a Prom Queen sash when I finally came in with him. He changed into a tux when we got there too.

It was amazing, and our friends thought he did it just for my birthday, but then he proposed on the dance floor in front of all of our friends!

It’s funny too because I always told him that I didn’t want him to propose on my birthday or Christmas and that I didn’t want it to be in front of people. I guess he figured if he ignored both of those requests that I would definitely be surprised!

I love the Golden Gate Bridge! Your proposal was so sweet! :) We got engaged on a sail cruise just as we went under the bridge. Now every time I see it on tv or ads, it reminds me of that moment! I’m glad there’s someone else out there that will look at it the same way. :)

There was no one around when my fiance popped the question,k but right after I said yes and we were walking back holding hands, a guy on a bike rode by us and said,”hey you two love birds.” We must have both been glowing.

I am amazed that no one told you if that many people knew. Your friends are good with secrets. I am terrible.
