Mrs. Poodle's Picture
Mrs. Poodle, Santiago, Chile/San Bernardino, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Industrial & Web Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Firefighter & Mountain Patrol Engagement Date: February 25, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Mr. P's Grandparents’ Ranch About Me: I’m a Chilean girl who's crazy about nature and swimming. I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.
About Mrs. Poodle

Last December we made a trip to one of the more wonderful places in my country, PATAGONIA!! (woo hoo!)

It was an amazing trip. We hiked as much as we could during the time we spent in the park. And on our way back from the highest point to see the “Torres del Paine”, we found this very old tree - dead and laying on the ground with small pieces all around. I thought to myself, “Yeahh! Carving material!” (I really like to make figures out of wood.) So I picked up two small pieces while thinking about carving something special, so that Mr. Poodle and I could each have one and remember how awesome this trip was.

Here I am with a piece of wood I had just picked up. The other one was inside my jacket. You can see on my face that I was all sore, thanks to a twisted ankle… I’m using my love’s clothes because mine were wet.

Recently Mr. Poodle talked to me about having different kind of rings for our wedding.  Once he said “wood”, bang! - the forgotten pieces of wood under my bed popped into my mind and an idea was born

My very best friend and MOH, who happens to be an industrial designer too, has her own lil handmade jewelry lineI told her about the idea of designing and making a ring (she’s here in Chile and we’re only making Mr. Poodle’s ring not mine :P).  Even though she has never worked with wood before, she was excited about making it!

My MOH and Mr. Poodle have been e-mailing back and forth and neither of them have let me know anything about their plan, but it’s ok!

For Mr. Poodle, I started looking for ideas that mixed wood and metal for wedding bands. Here are the two I liked the most:

But I was thinking that I would like it better if the wood were only on the exterior, so that my MOH can engrave the ring without any problems. I also want to eliminate the “dots” on the sides (that’s how the ring holds the wood in this kind of ring).

What you think? Should I go with the softer edges or the hard edges for the ring? I don’t know if the first one looks too girly? Which would you like if you were a male Poodle?

I like the first one for Mr Poodle, but either seems manly to me. That’s so sweet you’ll be able to incorporate that piece of wood!

That is such a cool idea — what a neat way to incorporate an amazing memory for you two. I actually like the second one, but they’re both awesome!

I like the second option in looks, and I also think that the rounded edges might be more comfortable to wear.

I think the wood only on the exterior would be a good idea. It will be nice for engraving, but also it might help the wood last longer? I know there are a lot of oils in your skin and it might prevent the wood from absorbing them.

I love this idea, though. It so meaningful! I’ve seen some similar rings on Etsy and I’ve always liked how they looked but I don’t think FI would like them very much : (

i lean towards the hard edges…. both rings are beautiful with the wood though!

What a beautiful way to incorporate it into your ring! I think the 2nd one showcases the wood best.

I like the softer edges…I tink it might be more comfortable for him also.

I *love* this idea! My FI first revealed the 4-year long crush he had on me in Patagonia (the day after we hiked up to see the sunrise on the Torres). That park will obviously always have special meaning for us too…it’s so great that you will be able to incorporate it into his ring!!!

I like the one with soft edges. And it doesn’t look girly at all!

As a side note, that is such an awesome idea, and your rings are going to be so beyond special to you both. =)

Stupid me. I always thought Patagonia was just a clothing line. How cool. Great pics!

@Jennarationnext: he doesn’t like wood? or is it because it looks different?
@fizicsGirl: Oh my!! that’s so sweet!! We loved that trip and everyone asked me if that’s where he proposed, so lame I have to answer “Nop, over the phone a month after that” lol but he wants to make up for that with the “real ring” on his hand once we are together again :)
@Jenniphyr: that’s what I hope for :)
@jungus: your too funny!! :P

I bought my honey a solid wood one from Etsy as an engagement ring and we’ll probably use it as a wedding ring also. He loves it. It has three stripes of wood in it, no metal, and is beautifully polished. The Etsy seller (stoutwoodworks) also provided a small bottle of oil to treat it with occasionally if it gets dry looking. The warm wood blends with his skin and looks so natural and comfortable on him.

Wow, love how unique this idea is! Just wondering/worrying if the wood on the outside will “erode” or show its age quicker than if metal were “protecting” it.

Are we going to be able to see some of your carvings? :-)
