Project: Venue Search

July 24th, 2009 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Sprinkle

For many long months before our actual engagement, Mr. Sprinkle and I talked about marriage. What it means to us, how it would change our relationship, and if it was something we wanted to tackle. Obviously we came to a decision on that one! But for all of those days and weeks I had many hours to daydream about OPW, aka, OUR PERFECT WEDDING. Being a preschool teacher, I have a lot of time to daydream at work while the kids are napping!

Early in the fall, my pilates partner mentioned she had attended an amazing wedding in downtown LA. It was a unique loft space with an indoor/outdoor feel. I looked up the venue, bookmarked it, showed it to Mr. S and tried not to think about it too much, as it seemed a tad on the way-too-expensive side.

All this boils down to is that, when the engagement happened, I was prepared. I had read the blogs, the message boards, the journals. And I knew what I wanted! Basically: a local venue (very important), that would let us bring in our own food/drinks (not budging on this one), that had space for a ceremony and reception (I wouldn’t want to drive in between the two), and that had an indoor space and an outdoor area. As much as I love woodsy places, I really wanted to go as local as possible, and east LA isn’t exactly known for its woods (or IS it?).

The Marvimon House met all of these requirements! And it has a show kitchen! I did spend some time researching other venues, but the places that let you bring your own food didn’t have any green things growing, and the pretty hotels downtown made you use their in-house catering (in-house catering never specializes in vegan cuisine…) and I am not a big beach person and I want a late night party, so running into the forest is out… and on, and on, and on. One by one, all other potential venues were eliminated.

We made an appointment, met with the owners, picked a date, and now it’s really happening. I feel blessed to be able to work with completely local vendors (All vegan food sourced within 400 miles? Score!), and we can have an outdoor ceremony and a rocking party inside.

Was your venue choice an easy one or did it take a while to make any solid decisions?

My reception venue choice was a cinch. Every other place we looked at afterwards, we kept saying, well it doesn’t have [blank] like our favorite reception venue had.

Ceremony venue has been a battle. We wanted to get married in a church and we’ve just hit brick walls everywhere (masses during our desired ceremony time, have to be a member, construction and on and on and on) So now the ceremony is outdoors in a town park, it’s beautiful, and I could not be happier.

And of course, awesome find on your reception venue! It looks awesome and it’s great that you get to bring in everything yourself.

Wow, this is beautiful! I can’t wait to see what you do with this space. For us, it came down to the almighty dollar. So we hunted for the best setting at the most affordable price.

I started looking, reading blogs, posting on boards, etc just like you before I was engaged and knew what I did and didn’t want. I also realized how HARD it was going to be to find something we wanted. We finally found something and it meets all the requirements :) Congrats on your find and I think it’s very cool! Can’t wait to hear more!

Just went to look at the website and OMG this place is awesome. If I could I would get married in LA. Little too far a drive for all the guests though :) Awesome find and such a soothing place!

Your venue is beautiful! =) I’m glad you found one so perfect for you guys!

Our venue decision is a bit difficult. We want an outdoor venue, but with weather protection, one that will let us bring in our own food, and won’t seem too pretentious for our really simple picnic wedding. And it has to be local, and work for ceremony and reception. And cheap!

It is…hard. There are almost NO outdoor venues where we live, and the ones that are outdoors are JUST for the ceremony. Sigh. The only choices we have are campgrounds (the local ones are a bit…iffy) and local parks, but neither include weather protection.

I am dying over picking a venue. A lot of my criteria is the same as your, don’t want to drive between ceremony and reception, want inside and outside and want somewhere close to hotels and attractions for out of town guests. We don’t live where we are getting married, so I am hoping that we will be able to find the perfect place on our next visit in two weeks.

Wow, what a beautiful spot! I feel exactly the way your post started, my fiance and I talked about marriage for almost a year before he actually popped the question (I have a planner overstuffed with ideas and I’m only going on a few weeks of actually being engaged) — and yet I have NO IDEA where we’re going to actually be married!! My wish list is exactly like yours, sub vegetarian for vegan, and I’m finding it surprisingly very hard to find something in our style and our budget close to home. Congrats on your beautiful venue and looking forward to seeing more posts about it!!

I quickly googled your venue…and I am in LOVE w/your venue. In LOVE. The architectural details are awesome.
We are having THE hardest time right now finding a venue. Not for lack of trying….just issues all around. Doesn’t help that it’s 300 miles away. Sigh.

I’m so jealous that you guys get to have your wedding there! My fiance vetoed the Marvimon because he didn’t like that the kitchen was out in the open. How are you guys going to deal with it? Are you caterers going to set up there or in that back room instead?
