The Other Ring

July 24th, 2009 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Beagle

I’m not talking about my wedding ring, nor am I talking about Mr. Beagle’s ring (both of which I will blog about soon!). And no, I have never been engaged or married before.

I’m talking about the other ring… my stunt double ring, if you will.

Let me explain. My engagement ring and wedding ring are more or less a set. Even though they weren’t sold as a set, they match nicely and look great together. The problem I have is that, although I love them, there are certain places and situations where I don’t want to where them. As beautiful as they are, I would hate to hurt them, or worse, endanger their lives. While I work in an office most days, there are times when I am required to be “in the field”. The “field” is not a place where I want my precious jewelry going, so I decided to invest in another ring.

Now, I know it may sound ridiculous and even frivolous to have three rings, but I am certain they will equally get the love and attention they deserve. I suppose that I could just remove my rings when I know I’ll be in situations where my hands might get dirty. However, I am horrible with losing things and I’m scared that continually taking my rings off might lead to that. I have also gotten so used to wearing my engagement ring over the past year (which is really weird because I never wore rings at all before our engagement), that I feel really odd when I don’t have it on. If I’m missing it, I often look at my left hand and freak out for a second until I remember not putting it on.

So, for all the above reasons, I purchased this:

The Other Ring : wedding rings Img 25101 The Other Ring : wedding rings Img 25102 It’s a 2mm, white gold band and it was a relatively inexpensive (like under $50) purchase. It fits all my requirements: simple, cheap, comfortable, and it won’t get in the way of doing things. I love it! And as an added bonus, it sentimentally reminds me of the rings my grandmothers wear/wore.

Am I the only crazy person that bought a ring specifically for work?

I didn’t purchase a ring specifically as a “third.” But I have an band I bought for myself years ago because I loved it, and now I use it as my stand-in when I’m doing things like cleaning, working out, at the beach, etc — so my actual engagement ring doesn’t get lost/messed up. I think it’s an excellent idea!!

I am an ecologist. I spend weeks outside digging soil and collecting plants. I am definitely getting a simple work ring.

I’m a firefighter, I’ve had a “stunt double” (love it) ring since my engagement. Because prongs and diamonds do not do well in warm places, dirty places, or most often=under latex gloves (very annoying, and tears the gloves). I love my stunt double.

We even got it engraved with a phrase that we couldn’t get put on our engagement ring because it didn’t fit, so it’s extra special.

I bought backup rings too. I have a 3 ct engagement ring, 2 matching eternity bands, and a 3 stone CZ ring. Depending on the situation I mix and match. Most days I just wear the eternity bands to work so nothing gets nickied, when I travel I wear the CZ (I have butter fingers), and on social occasions I wear the engagement ring and eternity bands. It’s fun to have options.

I thought about it for work since I work in a manufacturing facility, but they recently changed the policy to no jewelry at all on the shop floor. I was really paranoid about losing it if I kept taking it off whenever I needed to go out on the floor, so now I don’t wear my ring to work at all.

I thought about it this past weekend when I went to the beach! I didn’t want to wear the engagement ring to the beach, but I didn’t want my hand to be “naked.” I am like you, I never wore rings before our engagement, and now it feels strange without it.

I bought a little band like that too, when my e-ring was getting sautered to my wedding bands. I still wear it every now and then though.

I plan on doing the exact same thing. My thought is more so traveling or camping where I don’t want my bling to go rather than work, but still all the same concept.

your SO not crazy! I think is really cool that you actually have a “back up” ring, great idea. I might end up stealing that and design “another” ring for Mr. Poodle, he’s so worried about getting his ring dirty when he’s at work, we thought about a necklace to hang it but this could be a way better idea.

Not yet, but I will. Would you mind telling us where you found it? I’ve been looking for the same thing (for the same reason) and I haven’t found one under $150 yet.

I totally have a spare ring - for work (I do divorce law for poor people, so flashing the rock around is a little insensitive), and also for play while I train for my triathlon so I don’t have to worry about losing my ring in the water.

I too will have one as a back up. I don’t want to wear my e-ring or sentimental wedding band (both include either diamonds or the actual band from his grandmother) and I don’t want to damage or lose them. When I’m in the garden, cooking or camping I will not be wearing my lovlies, I’ll wear a simple one just as you have picked out.

i had a back-up ring too! my “in the field” means less-than-safe urban neighborhoods, sometimes late at night, and i felt it was too much risk to take. and, i felt it created a weird dynamic with clients (like ellie mentioned) who are not in the same economic circumstances.
mine was from claire’s though!

My future SIL and MIL wear their (plain) bands on the weekends when they are working around the house/yard, but my band has diamonds, so I think I will buy a simple plain band as well, great idea!

I never thought I would need a stunt double ring, until one day when I was working at a library in a particularly bad neighborhood. I am a librarian and I work as a sub, so I skip from branch to branch within our library system. A person at this one branch told to make sure no one cuts my finger off to get my ring. Yikes!

My wedding ring will be “specifically for work” in that it will be completely plain (I’m in nursing, so we’re grudgingly allowed a single flat-surfaced band).
