We’re Adopting

July 24th, 2009 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

Not one of these.

Or one of these.

And we’re definitely nowhere near ready for one of these.

Figure it out yet? Need a hint? Early in our planning, Mr. Bruschetta and I agreed that we’d make a charity donation, in honor of our wedding, to the Wetlands Institute — and in so doing, “adopt” one of these.

We’re thrilled that our small gift will support valuable research and contribute to projects that help protect nesting diamondback terrapins and hatchlings. And making this commitment is all the more special since we’ve been closely connected to this cause for a number of years.

The mister and I agreed, though, that our guests should receive some token of our appreciation in addition to the small note that will explain about our donation and connection to the Wetlands Institute.

I’ll reveal further details in a future post — yup, I’m teasing this one out — but for now, I’d love to hear your opinions on charity donations as favors.

Love ’em? Hate ’em? Should they always be accompanied by some tangible item, or is a note expressing your gratitude — and explaining the reason for selecting the organization benefiting from your money — all that’s necessary?

I think it’s a great idea, and “donation” favors don’t have to have a tangible item to go along with them, but it’s certainly nice. My sister and her husband donated money to the ASPCA for their wedding favors, and simply put a note at each seat explaining the charity and their reasons.

Love ‘em. I think a note of appreciation is a good idea. But I don’t necessarily think they always have to be accompanied by some item. Unless it is somehow tied into the charity like Ms. Stiletto and her granola. :)

I went to the wedding of a couple who had rescued a bulldog. Their reception favor was a donation to the foundation they had adopted through. I thought it was really nice.

I love them! I do think a note will be helpful, but having something tangible is not necessary. However, adding a tangible item will give you another DIY opportunity!

Hi, i’m getting married next weekend and we decided to donate as well. We adopted a puppy a few months ago and a kitten a few months before that (yes we live in a petting zoo now). So we decided to donate what we would have spent on favors to the shelter. They have a fund appropriatly called The Love Fund that provides free emergancy vet care to low income families. The few hundred dollars from us meant a lot to them. We got a nice card signed by the volunteers and a letter from the ex director thanking us. We’re framing both and displaying at the wedding along with a card the explains what we did. We originally thought of tieing little cards to organic dog biscutts to give our guests. but we decided that we didnt want to give out a tangible favor.

great donate! i research sea turtles and the wetlands institute is a great organization.

That’s a great idea! I agree that you don’t necessarily need a tangible item, and that a note is perfectly acceptable. At my cousin’s wedding recently, the couple DIY’ed cute little note cards explaining that as they both had family members afflicted with the disease, they were donating to Alzheimer’s research. It was very touching, and truthfully, I think that gesture is sometimes more memorable than a take-home favor.

I love donation favors! Next to that, there’s favors you can eat. I appreciate the thought that everyone puts into their favors. Think of it this way: it’s better to give [a donation] than to receive [a niknak].

Love em! We’re doing donation favors to our two favorite nonprofits. I designed a card to put on everyone’s seat with our monogram at Vistaprint (love all the free stuff at that site). Honestly I have thrown away every single wedding favor I’ve received, so I think that this is the way to go. Actually, the only one I’ve kept is a matchbook because it’s actually useful. We have those too but they’re so small and they were so cheap that I don’t really count them.

I love this idea and love that it’s so fitting for you both and your family considering the tradition. I hope to do this myself, now which charity I don’t know, but I like that idea better than giving people stuff with our wedding date plastered on it.

i love them! mister and i seriously considered doing a donation favor but ultimately went with something else. i would be more than happy to be a guest at a wedding where the ‘favor’ was a donation.
a little different, my aunt and her fiance (who are both in their late 30s) asked that in lieu of any wedding gifts, donations be made to the american cancer society since they have both lost parents to cancer and have pretty much set up a home together already. i think its great!!

@Miss Poodle: No name for her (yup, we’ll get a girl, so we can know we’re helping her survive and be able to lay her eggs!) yet, since we haven’t actually MADE the donation yet — but we’ll do it before the wedding for sure.

I think it’s a great idea. I think it’s a nice way to give back and spread the word about a charity that matters to you. FWIW, I LOVE turtles, so I’m happy you’re helping them out.

We gave our guests a choice of three different charities to choose from, one honoring each of our families and a third one that we chose to represent us - an idea I got from weddingbee! Our guests really loved being able to choose their charity.

I think the meaing behind it makes it so special, and people would appreciate a nice small card that explains the contribution. I don’t think that something other than that is necessary

Ummm I love that St. Bernard! But I suppose what you’re “adopting” is cute too, and you’re doing something good…cute favor idea!
