Project: Honeymoon!

July 25th, 2009 @ 2:55 pm by Mrs. Sprinkle

Mr. S and I are not telling anyone our honeymoon destination until we return. Part Irish tradition (something about drinking mead in a hidey-hole for a month so our families can’t find us and break us up), part paranoia about people telling us that our trip sounds weird. Friends and family have been guessing for months, and some have come very, very close, but no one has pinpointed the exact location yet! I can say, due to time constraints, we are staying in the continental United States, leaving the day after the wedding, and returning six days later. I would love to take a two week tropical or European or Asian adventure, but when you run a small business or don’t get paid time off, that is virtually impossible.

The places we considered going, in order of consideration:

1. Ireland. When we first started planning, Mr. Sprinkle wanted to go to Ireland; Ireland, and only Ireland. I finally talked him into one week of Ireland followed by a week in Italy, but this was before we realized we only had one week to honeymoon. We don’t want to do any part of Europe in only one week, especially since Mr. S has never traveled overseas.

2. Costa Rica. After the Europe idea was thrown out, we decided on tropical! Costa Rica is not only tropical but super vegan friendly (A vegan resort! A tree house hotel!) and really inexpensive in September. But it’s super cheap for a reason: green season - a fancy, friendly way of saying rain all day. And mudslides, washed out roads, and many closed hotels. While normally I really wouldn’t mind such things, we want to keep our honeymoon a bit more relaxed and easygoing. So we are saving this one for another September.

Hawaii was out since we go there for Thanksgiving. NYC was out because I have been there a hundred times. Mexico and Canada were out for the same reason. Eventually we decided to stay here in the US, but find somewhere we hadn’t visited before. We looked for three main things: vegan friendly, good nightlife/good outdoorsy stuff, and to be as environmentally responsible as possible.

At midnight the day after our wedding, we will be trekking to LAX (The horror! But Burbank didn’t have any flights to our destination). We will arrive in a state neither of us have set foot in before. Two states, three different cities, one bed and breakfast, one farm, one hotel, a short road trip in between destinations. Perfect!

While part of me still yearns for a month in Thailand or two weeks in Austria (ohhh dream vacations…), I know we will get to all of those places eventually. For now, I would just like to find a rental car for less than $1000.00 a week.

Are you taking your dream honeymoon, or saving some time and cash by traveling off the beaten path?

We’re traveling off the beaten path… but it just so happens to be our dream honeymoon! We’re doing a week-long microbrew, good food, and geology tour of Oregon - it’s perfect for us!

A tip for getting a good rental car price: try naming your own price on priceline.com! We ended up getting our rental car out of Portland for $20 per day. We started by putting in a request for $10/day, which got shot down right away, then tried $15, $18, and finally got a car from Avis for $20/day. You don’t get a say in which rental company you end up with, but you do get a really discounted price. Good luck!

We won’t be going on our dream honeymoon — hopefully we’ll save it for an anniversary. =) But the timing of our wedding will most likely mean that we’ll have literally no time for a honeymoon (barely enough for a minimoon to a national park, if we’re lucky), so we’ll be saving the much-needed money and waiting.

my hubby and i went to costa rica on our honeymoon in early august last year. i was weary of going during green season too but it mostly just rained at nighttime when we were already in our bungalow. we stayed in a popular part of costa rica, manuel antonio, which we loved. the good part of staying there was that nothing closed during the green season. when you have more time, i highly recommend going to costa rica!

i love to travel…and i love to hear of other people’s travels….i so want to know where you’re going. i don’t want to think right now…..lol.

FI and i always travel, so even though we’re not married yet, we’ve taken lots of honeymoons already…lol.

we are thinking of doing south africa/botswana/seychelles if time permits (that’s about a 3 week trip). if we only have 10 days, then we’ll be headed to the maldives.

sounds like it will be a great honeymoon. we’re still hoping to go away somewhere nice for our honeymoon next year but with all of our weddings we need to go to next year, 9 (all out of town) it seems like a mini-moon is much more likely & then a longer honeymoon in 2011.

For rental cars that are inexpensive try priceline, you can name your own really low price, which will probably get rejected, but then a few weeks later they will send you a “special last minute offer” with the deal that you wanted, or one that is close. And if you get the chance GO TO THAILAND! DO IT! I spent a month there and I can honestly say it changed my life for the better, and no I am not exaggerating. Right now http://www.friendlyplanet.com/ is offering a 9 day trip for $899. Yea, that includes flight, lodging, and tours. INSANE! I spent more than $1500 on my flight there two summers ago. Your trip you have planned sounds so exciting, I cannot wait to hear about it!

good idea! keeping it a secret, that is. when we considered hawaii people wouldnt stop suggesting things to do and people to meet there. we ended up travelling through colorado which was heaven, and noone had told us what to expect or things to do. it was ALL OURS. Have fun! (oh, and yeah the rental cars are a lot)

Ok car rental issue- had the very same one recently! Go to http://www.sidestep.com and put in your details…like EVERY day…and eventually you’ll get a great deal. I did this for an upcoming trip and the rentals were $600 for a week. I used sidestep to track the prices and ended up getting the car for $300- the kicker was, that deal was only good for one day. I still look to see if we can get an even cheaper deal, but haven’t seen one yet.
Congrats on your secret honeymoon! I think it’s a fantastic idea! shhhhh

We aren’t going on our dream-moon either, darn flights to Europe being so expensive!

We plan to head south to the US - and found a rental car via Expedia.com for somewhere around $600 for a week (we lucked out on our drop location not having a major drop-fee).
