Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

For a variety of reasons I’m just getting around to having my initial hair trials. My hairstylist and I call this the “rough draft”, in part because my hair is in a bit of a state. It’s about time for me to get my hair did, and so there is a lot of growth at the roots. I’ll explain this at some point, but just know that you really can’t get the full effect of my hair when it’s in its “frizzy/needs to be attended to” stage.

After lots of thought regarding logistics, I decided I wanted to not curl my hair, but to instead keep it straight and wear it up. As I mentioned before, my hair takes about two to three hours to just to do the basics. If I were to have it curled, it would definitely add an hour. Since we’re having a late morning wedding and hoping to do some pictures beforehand, I’m not waking up at 3 AM. Heck to nah, y’all! Plus we’ve for our welcome drinks that I mentioned before, so Friday night is out in terms of getting a hair appointment then. Right now the plan is to split things up by getting my hair washed and re-twisted the day before and then getting my hair pinned up in the morning bright and early.

So, shall we begin? After looking at some of my inspiration photos again I narrowed it down to couple that I thought would work best.

Here’s contestant #1

I love Sanaa Lathan (and so does Mr. Swan… ahem!). My stylist said that she could recreate styles with straightened hair, which she did. So here’s the rough draft:

Not a bad replica, I think. You can see the frizzies, huh? I liked it but was not sure. I then added the veil…

Before I show you, I should let you know that I have not become one with my veil. Yes, it’s a Kasia Fink original (thanks, Mrs. Sea Breeze) and while lovely, I’m definitely trying to make sure that I’m putting it on correctly in part because my hair doesn’t necessarily take to most hairpieces. There’s a reason why I don’t wear many things in my hair. I love my veil (thanks again), but in general I find things that can actually be inserted in my hair can be hard to find, and I had to be careful about choosing things with certain types of clips. I always emailed any hairpiece seller beforehand to ask what kind of clip was attached to the piece.

Anyway, here’s the first style with the veil.

That little fascinator looking thing on the top is actually a headpiece from Portobello. My stylist kinda just stuck it in there. I had not intended to wear the veil and the fascinator/headpiece together, but maybe I will. What do you think?

Here’s contestant #2:

Let me say that this is the style that has captured my attention since I first saw it.

I’m pleased with the result, and I am leaning towards this. Here’s the real life trial version:

Hopefully the right side will look a little better the second time around.

I didn’t do a very good job with the veil this time around. Here’s this style with the veil:

The fascinator/headpiece is in a funky place too. Hmm… I’ll need to work on that. I plan on becoming one with the veil if it kills me. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the placement, and I think it’s going to require me to play around with it.

I went home and put on the headpiece on without the veil to see how that looked. I liked it. I was thinking about just wearing the headpiece during the reception. I think I’ll be veil-less for that part of the wedding.

I think that the clip on the headpiece works pretty well with my hair. It’s an alligator clip.

Anyway, that’s it. Like I said, it’s a good beginning. I will be going back for a full run through that will include actually washing and re-twisting my hair. I think some of you are probably wondering how that all works, so maybe I will show you how.

Did you have multiple hair trials? What was the hair trial process like for you?

I only had one hair trial with two different styles. You are too cute! I love number 2!

Yup, three trials to get it right for me!

I love the details of the first style in the first picture — you can’t go wrong with either look!

omg miss swan, your hair is so beautiful!
I also really like how #2 looks from the front. Is it possible to make the bun part a little higher on your head, like in #1?

I like the first one! The veil works with it better - the way it sits! Beautiful, Miss S!

I like the first birdcage veil picture. You look so classic in it! I think you pull it off really well.

Both styles looks great !! And the veil looks fantastic with both too…tough choice…I definitely like the fascinator on the side better though :)
Good luck!

You can’t go wrong with either style–and I’m so jealous you have so much hair! But I really love the second one, it looks so ornate and special for the day—very bridal! :) The little veil with the hair piece is a beautiful addition.

Hmmm.. ok, as a fellow ‘lockie’ myself, here are my thoughts: for a wedding, I’m not feelin’ the first hairstyle. It looks a little too ‘Erica-Badu-ish’ for a wedding, you know what I mean? It’s a little too strong, and not enough woman/bridey. Plus, it seems to me as if I see that style on a regular (perhaps it’s most locked people’s go to style to get away from the summer heat).

I’m definitely feeling the second style better, although I would make the bun slightly lower, closer to your nape. I would also move the fascinator back a little to where the bun meets your head. Regarding the birdcage veil… I’m still on the fence about that.

I feel you on retwisting your hair. I have Sisterlocks. There are five sections in my head, which, when I retighten myself, takes me roughly four hours per section. YIKES!!!

Wow, I really love both! I personally like the first style just a little better because the higher bun placement makes you look more regal. I also think it works better with the birdcage veil. Since most commenters agree that both styles look amazing, the more important question is, which style makes you FEEL better?

I think I prefer the simplicity of the first style, but both look great, so go with the one that feels more ‘you’.

I agree with sunsail though that a really low bun might look lovely - I say go for high or low, not in the middle.

The veil and headpiece look like they could work if you played around with them a bit more - maybe try putting the flower (the one with the veil) at the side of your head rather that on top?

I like the look of the first style without the birdcage veil, but I definitely love the second style with the birdcage veil, and as a wedding hairstyle!

I agree with sunsail - while you look GREAT with both, the 2nd style is definitely more “bridey.” Maybe a little lower?

I just looked at them again, and I really like the second style, especially with just the fascinator. I wish I had that much hair. :)

I like the first style. Have you tried the flower lower on the hair, like tucked right below/behind the ear? It might balance the style a bit more and look more casual, improvisational?

I vote the second style, with the birdcage placed a little farther back on the head (or maybe just the fascinator placed further back to achieve the look of the first few photos).

Either way, very cute! I plan on going a birdcage w/ fascinator for the ceremony and only the fascinator for the reception myself.
