About Mrs. Bear Cub

MRBRCUB & MSBRCUB

July 27th, 2009 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Bear Cub

Sometimes I think I’m crazy. What was I thinking when I decided it’d be “great” to sign up for a marathon? While planning a wedding??

Oh right. I wanted to look like this.

Last weekend our long run was 14 miles. Let me tell you, that’s a lot of running. So. Much. Running. Every day - running. Get home from work - running. Plan some wedding on Saturday? Running. It really feels like I’m planning two marathons. Or running two weddings. I can’t remember.

The good news, though, is that we’re still chugging away!

The 14 miles didn’t kill me, and Mr. Bear Cub is the sweetest coach ever. I wouldn’t be able to run like this if it weren’t for him. He keeps me motivated and he’s always positive when we run. No sour sports here! I know it’s corny, but I love how my running partner is such a fantastic life partner. :)

We’ve got a little over 2 months before the “big day” (after our Big Day), and it’s time to start thinking about what we’ll wear on that other big day! Since we’re running the marathon (together! no personal records this time) right after we get back from our honeymoon, I thought it only appropriate we dress the part of the newlyweds.

As dorky as it may sound, we thought it would be ridiculously cute to dress up like a bride & groom for the marathon! We have to be smart about this, though. You can’t wear cotton when you run. You will chafe, and your nipples might bleed (seriously). For long runs, it’s best to wear sweat-wicking fabric. I personally love wool, but polyester (Nike’s “dry-fit”, for example) works perfectly fine. The problem is, they don’t really make much in the way of “bridal” running clothes. ;)

After a little searching, I found a cycling jersey (above) that’s a tuxedo! Perfect! A little buy-it-now action, eBay style, & Mr. Bear Cub is in like Flynn. Our bib “names” are a check - we’ll officially be MR & MSBRCUB by then. We’ve even been practicing a kiss at the “finish line” of every run! I don’t really know what I should wear, though! Should I wear a little mini-veil on top of my ponytail? Should I don some crazy tutu-esque white dress? Or should I be SANE and realistic about my first marathon, and wear what will be most comfortable? Sometimes the safest option for long runs is to wear something you know you’ll be comfortable in.

What do you think would be a good “bridal” running outfit? We’d love for the crowds at the race to know we’re recently married! :)

Maybe you could get typical white running clothes and wear a veil?

What about just white shorts, a white tank top, and a mini veil? It’s probably your safest, most “bridal” outfit. Just be prepared for the veil to fall off, after all you will be running.

Definitely wear what you’ll be comfortable in. I ran my first one a few months ago and honestly feel like even a veil in my ponytail would have driven me crazy the last few miles. You become VERY aware of everything on your body (even my ipod felt heavy). Maybe you could write “Just married” on your shirt or something. I’m not too sure how paint or marker would work on dry-fit, but it’s worth a shot!

That shirt is adorable! But now all I can think about are bleeding nipples :(

i think you should just wear a small piece of french netting around your ponytail. Be comfy!

Can you do special lacey/sparkly shoe laces? And definitely some sort of tiny veil!

So excited for you both! Whatever you run in, test it out. My vote would be to run in some kind of tech shirt that you’re comfortable with and personalize it with iron-on letters. As for the veil, if you’ll have folks cheering you on along the course, see if one of them can meet you about a mile from the finish to hand it to you. That way it’ll look fresh and you’ll be comfortable on the run. :o)

Good luck with the rest of your training!

I love the running skirts they have out now, and my friend wore one for her marathon and said it was very comfortable. A white running skirt, white top and a mini veil would be cute! I also like the “just married” shirt idea.

yeah, i think a white running skirt or shorts, white running tee and a mini veil on your ponytail will be perfect! TIP: try out your outfit on a decent run (longer than 10 miles) to make sure nothing bothers you before the race! Good luck!

OMG I love love the idea or running with a veil and he in a Tux shirt. I totally plan on doing that for a smaller race before I get married. Training for my first marathon last year was so crazy intense that I swore I would wait until AFTER our wedding to do another one. GOOD LUCK MISS BC!! You can do it!

My fiancé and I ran a half marathon last month. I made buttons for us to wear that said “Running Beside My Groom” and “Running Beside My Bride.” We got lots of compliments while running!

I’m working up to a 5k (hopefully a 10k) and now all i can think about is nipple blood. but you and mr. bear cub will look super cute no matter what you do. Is there an all white tech shirt you can wear?

I think that Mrs. Yorkies suggestion is excellent. Any time my husband runs a long race I usually meet him along the course to take his layers or give him more gels etc. so it totally works. I also love the idea of the running skirts and a tiny veil would be awesome! Congrats on doing this! I know how much of a commitment it is. You will be so proud of yourself when you finish!!! Even though I don’t run I always tear up when I’m at the finish line waiting for my husband. GOOD LUCK!!!

I vote white and a running hat with veil attached - http://weddingfortwo.blogspot.com/2009/05/diy-runaway-bride-hat.html
I ran my half wearing a hat and was totally comfortable, plus no face or scalp sunburn and no need to wear sunscreen you sweat off, and honestly, if you really get weighed down, just get rid of it.
Also, highly recommend checking out a running skirt - they’re like wearing spandex/compression shorts (read no chafing) and they’re great for pictures.

I’ve also seen people run races in handmade t-shirts that say their wedding date. I’m planning to do a half on my honeymoon, and I’ll probably do a shirt with my wedding date and married name or something.

You can totally be comfortable and bridal!

@Gilneas: haha sorry about the TMI… distance running isn’t exactly glamorous (there are whole articles in running magazines about how to pop a squat during a race!)

One word: Bodyglide. Put it everywhere! Inner thighs, boobs, shoulders where the bra straps rest. This stuff will save your life. No more yelping in the shower when the water hits the previously unknown chafe-age.

I’m with you about the craziness of wedding running and marathon planning (sic intended ;). We’re opposite you- our marathon is in 2 weeks and our wedding is exactly two months later. Wait til the 20 milers. I started to hallucinate. VERY IMPORTANT- plan your route to avoid passing any backyard pools on the last 8 miles of your long runs. I nearly cussed out some poor teenagers who had the audacity to be lounging in gorgeous cool waters as I rounded mile 18. Not good…

@Miss D’orsay: don’t worry about nipple blood ;) it’s usually a problem just for guys. they wear band-aids over their nipples, we have a bit of protection from chaffing from the sports bra.

@Ellie: @mkat88: great ideas!
@teamzeewagen: haha hallucinate?? seriously?? The only time I’ve ever heard of someone hallucinating on a run was some dude who ran over 100 miles. He said at about mile 80 his running partner looked like a giant taco.
haha that’s a good idea about the pools, too :) omg I didn’t even think of it! I’m already getting cranky above 10 miles when children run in front of me. It’s crazy hard to alter your trajectory!

congrats on your 14 miler! that’s the best part about training for a long distance, every long run is breaking a new personal distance record! The only thing I would be careful of is having tulle anywhere that could potentially be scratchy after a while . . . Good luck with the continued training!

Having run 2 marathons, I’d say stay comfortable, because you will likely be SO UNCOMFORTABLE for other reasons near the end that you want your clothes to feel nice. I like the suggestions to get a white running skort, and wear a white tank top and I think perhaps a little pony-tail holder with a veil attached to it…Or, if you’re wearing a white running cap (I LOVE those things), you could attach tulle to the top of it that you probably wouldn’t notice at all!

Good luck!

Also, I have hallucinated during both of my marathons, although it was more visual distortions/halos/wavering vision than seeing Mr. CP as a taco or something. Any distance longer than 18 miles does not agree with me or my quads. I recommend training over the 21-mile mark, if you can… although that works well for a lot of people. For me, the last 8 miles were always far, far, worse than anything that came before them.

And yes, BODY GLIDE luuuvvv. I also recommend carring water, because if it’s hot you will want it between the stations. :D

love this idea! my mr. is not a runner really but I’m thinking he might do the 8K I always do in the spring, it’ll be the weekend before our wedding, I think it would be awesome to run it together in bride/groom outfits! I love the hat with the tulle idea the best - but I would sew just a little 6-inch-long bit of tulle (or french netting, even better) closer to the top of the head, rather than hanging off the back, so it sticks up and never touches you.
@jello - love that running dress!! unfortunately there are only limited sizes left right now. SIGH.

Super cute idea!

OMG I LOVE IT!! I think doing something white at least on top for you from your favorite brand, maybe what if you found some of those fabric flower pins? Would one of those on a strap be too irritating? (They are selling some cute ones at NY&Co). And then a short but very tulle-y veil, I bet you could attach it to your ponytail hair tie!

Do it up with a veil! It’d be cool if carrying a small bouquet wouldn’t be a pain while running! :)

I ran my ‘only’ marathon the day after my birthday with three friends and we all wore birthday hats and leis (don’t recommend the leis!). Let me tell you - the amount of people wishing me a happy birthday TOTALLY carried me through all 26.2 miles. I don’t think I would have finished otherwise.

I totally vote for bring on the extra attention to help distract you from all the miles :)

(I would make sure it is ‘light’ and practice running with it. The leis sounded fun but they are VERY hot. I think they ended up around our wrists. So you want to make sure whatever you dress up with is not too distracting)

Don’t wear anything you aren’t prepared to ditch. I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon and ditched my tiara by the 1K mark. It was okay because it was cheap.

Anything you wear is magnified by every mile. So a clip or comb from the veil gets pretty annoying my mile 26.

That said, try it out on your practice runs to see if it would work. You can also get a white running T and use iron on decals that say bride or something (Target sells great white dryfit shirts). That way you still feel special but it won’t annoy you.

Final Tip: remember that your bib will take up a lot of the front of your shirt so don’t do too much only to have to cover it later.

I love this idea! How cute! The shirt you got for Mr. BC is just great…I agree with most everyone else…something white would work good! I know you need special fabric, but if you found a white top…could you do a little DIY bedazzling and write Bride…or Mrs. BC on it somehow? Just a thought!
