This Made Me Cry

July 27th, 2009 @ 6:10 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

This question came up during my BeeTV segment on Saturday night: What wedding blogs do you read? To be honest, I’ve shied away from them. I felt like they were extremely beneficial when it came to figuring out what our overall theme would be and then using the blogs to find details we could incorporate. But once you start incorporating those details, you have to turn a blind eye or you’ll get overwhelmed. You’ll get confused. You’ll start re-doing or renovating your plans.

That’s how I felt. Until I saw this on Style Me Pretty and cried:

Ashley & Jamie’s Same Day Edit from Anguilla from Julie Hill on Vimeo.

I never really considered the idea of a videographer. We can’t afford one. I doubt we’d watch it very much. But, now, I’ve decided I may need to include this detail into our day.

Using Ms. Joey’s advice once again, I posted on Craigslist in the Denver area looking for someone to shoot and edit a video of our wedding. What I want doesn’t need to be genius, but I love how they play with speed in the video above—quick movement of the clouds followed by slow motion images of the bride and her dress.

While surfing the black hole of wedding blogs, I saw this vintage-y gem on Once Wed.

Myriah + Christopher from joel serrato on Vimeo.

Marry the two ideas—elements of speed and super 8 film (can you put those two together?)—and we’d have a winner.

We’re hoping we come across a film student with some raw talent looking to further his or her portfolio. I’ll let you know if we discover something good.

Did you hire a videographer? What wedding videos were your inspiration?

Oh. My. God.

That first video really made me want to cry, too. Now I really want a videographer and just have very little budget wiggle room. Darn you, Miss CB! Maybe I’ll be hitting the CL ads soon…

I’ve been dreaming of a video like this ever since Mrs. Kitten posted hers….sadly, I don’t even know if our budget could afford a student. Good luck Miss CB!

Oh no, now it looks I’ll have to budget for a videographer too! sigh. I was excited about being able to nix something, especially since I’m a bit camera shy, but that video is just heartbreakingly beautiful. Love the idea of using Craigslist!

I, too, fell in love with videography after seeing a joel serrato video on a wedding blog. :) Will be very interested to see what you come up with using craigslist - I am afraid to do so as wedding videos are SO hit or miss.

I just chatted about this the other day with my aunt and she brought up a good point. You’re kids will think it’s great, and your grandkids. She showed her video (she was sad she didn’t hire someone, but had a friend do it) to her 6 year old and her daughter loved it and loved seeing all the family members a bit younger. And then I remembered seeing my grandparents super 8 film at their 60th wedding anniversary and realized how great it was to see that. It had me tearing up.

I wanted one too but thought it was so out of our price range. Then I read the posts by Miss Joey about how she found the photographer off craigslist. She wrote a post about how to just go for it…expect to get a few “hater emails”..but you never know.
So I posted an add telling people that we only could afford $300. I knew that was pocket change and asked people to please not write to tell me this. I said that I was looking for a student or someone looking to build thier portfolio
Well wouldn’t you know…..I got atleast 4 emails from people saying they could do it.
I finally booked a couplle. They are shooting with TWO cameras and they are giving me 6hours of coverage for only $300!! They have it maked on their website as the $999 package.
Thanks to Miss Joey…I get to have my dream of a wedding video.
So go for it! I this economy…people are often willing to make deals. Good for it…and good luck!!!

Hey Mis CB ~ I’ve been doing some research around the Denver area as well… Let me know if you want some names of affordable videophs….I haven’t met with any of them yet - since our wedding is not until next summer. But I do have prices, etc.

I ended up calling some random people - like my college best friend’s sister’s boyfriend who I know occasionally makes spoofy (yet oddly professional looking) YouTube videos. He was busy that weekend, but had a suggestion of someone else who was available and did the whole thing for $600. I honestly watch the highlight reel (like what you posted above) about once a month.

I didn’t think we wanted a videographer until my sister told me it was her favorite thing from her wedding and that my nieces love to watch it all the time. I don’t know if I can budget it in though.

I originally did not want a videographer because the only ones I’ve ever seen are too cheesy. That was until I came across:

http://www.stillmotion.ca/site.html

WOW, I urge you all to see their first video under ‘Cinema’ as this was what changed my opinion. Unfortunately they are waaay above our budget so we’ll just have to keep looking.

we didn’t want a videographer either. it was the first thing we both said we didn’t care about and could completely do without.
then the dreaded wedding blogs took over and i kept seeing this one name all over the place for a couple of months. so i checked it out and every clip on his site made me cry… i really loved what he did and it was nothing like any “wedding video” i’d ever seen. needless to say i showed it to my fiance and he loved the style too… we knew they’d be well above what we’d be willing to pay (ocnsidering we hadn’t budgeted for one) but we contacted them anyway. it ended up being the first vendor we booked and it’s the one i’m still the MOST excited about! i CAN NOT wait to see the final outcome of his work for our wedding!

Do it! Not having a pro videographer (even a student would have done better than my uncle) is one of my biggest regrets from the wedding.

If you want some video but don’t want to shell out $ on a pro, maybe consider hiring a high school or college kid to do it? You could contact local schools and ask if they have job listings of some sort or could point you to students that might be interested in this sort of thing.

Wow, what an amazing video! We’ve cut a videographer from our budget, but this makes me want to look for a way to get it back in the budget!

That first video was absolutely beautiful! Wow! We are having a videographer - actually, ours was the first vendor we booked after we got our venue. I’d been admiring her work ever since I helped my sister with her planning in 2005, and we really wanted to make sure that our budget allowed for her! You can check out her work here: http://www.wilsonfontaine.com.

It took my breath away!

Breathtaking! We are lucky with this ONE element: my FI has a friend who makes small scale movies and he and his team have offered to give us their videographer services as a wedding gift. I really had no idea what to look for but these are GREAT inspiration. Thank you Miss CB!!!

Yup, we hired the same videographer Sister and BIL Bruschetta used! Nothing really fancy, but we’re excited to see it — maybe once a year or so? — especially the 10-ish minute full synopsis that goes from first look to last dance!

No matter what I will have one. I would rather cut some money from invitations, limos and flowers just to have one

We splurged and booked stillmotion for our wedding - best money I spent on the entire wedding. period. Motion film is so captivating if done properly - for me, it has even more emotional impact than photography. We had to skimp on some other aspects of the wedding to have them, but it was all worth it.

Wow, all of the videos posted here are amazing! We have a friend (who is a media arts student) taking video of our day, and then I plan to send it to a professional editing company to make it look artsy and interesting. I would LOVE to spend whatever it takes to have the best videographer around, but this will have to do. I just keep thinking about how special it would be if I could see a video of my grandparents’ wedding, and hoping that my grandchildren will appreciate it as I would.

This is my only regret from our wedding day. I didn’t think we needed one either. That was before the crazy speeches and the million other details big and small I want to hold dear until I die. And I will, but oh how wonderful would a video be. Do it. Even if its nothing fancy. The day goes by so quick and there is too much to take in. Do it.

great, so now I’m sitting at work with crocodile tears!

Both of the videos are gorgeous…and a marrying of the two would be equally as tear worthy :)

Oh my! Yes, I am in the same boat as many. I was totally indifferent about videos, bordering on “no” because my man and I are both a bit camera shy. BUT, I came across the work of MindCastle Studios and have been swooning ever since. I’m still not sure if we’ll do a video because my man is very, very, very uneasy about it. But, I am trying to convince him. I want the video more for our children and our children’s children than for us. The only problem with MindCastle is their price, so I’m really interested to see how your CL experience goes!! Maybe I’ll follow your lead!

Here are my three favorite videos:

Wow, I haven’t viewed these videos yet but I’m scared to!! I’ve never thought I wanted a video, I am willing to spend a lot on photography and figured I would have someone put together a professional-looking slide show of all the photos set to music, without actual video. (Saw a friend’s like this, and loved it). But reading these comments, seems like I need to reconsider?? Back to the budget!

@ Elizabeth - you like our SDE yay! I still watching it several times a week. I can personally vouch for Casey from Mindcastle. He’s such an awesome guy - very enthusiastic about his work and really fun to be around. Great choice :)

Ladies, I am currently the MOH for my best friend’s wedding and I LOVE these type of videos as well. So as a gift to her I will be recording us all through out the day and having others record as well. I plan on taking the videos and creating one video like the ones shown above using Windows Movie Maker. I’ve been practicing by using videos of my son and playing with the different techniques. It’s very easy to do and can be a great gift to someone or for your own wedding. I’m obsessed with DIY things and love ways to save money. So this is my tip to save you money!

Oh wow. That first video definitely made me cry as well. Thank you for posting it…but darn you for making me want a videographer as well now! I think you should do it…if you can find some wiggle room in your budget, it could be such a wonderful keepsake. I keep telling myself that I don’t need one, but then I see videos like this, and yeah…enough said.
