I’m not talking about the Penelope Cruz movie, even though I really like it and wish I could cook like she can. I’m talking about cake toppers!
Mr. Poodle is a very good climber and I love to go climbing with him every chance we get. (Notice how I didn’t mention I was good at it!
I’m not… yet!)
So after I told him that I thought it would be cool to have climbers on our cake, the first thing he said was, “Ohh, can I be climbing the cake and can you be at the top helping me out?” I said, “Of course!”
I searched for the perfect climber’s pose. The girl will be on top of the cake holding a rope, and the boy will be climbing his way up. (Go Mr. Poodle! You can make it!)
During my first attempt, I used normal, cheap clay—not the same kind I’m using for the flowers.
{The first attempt at climbers}
Can you see the huge head Mr. Poodle had? Well it was supposed to be a helmet… LOL. But after I baked the figurines, I didn’t like what I saw, as they were all full of small cracks.
What a bummer. So, I rescued the wire body and started all over again from scratch.
The end result of the first attempt was NOT GOOD - the figurines ended up self destructing.
In my second attempt, I wanted a harder material that didn’t need the drying process. I went back to my college years and used good old masilla magica - this “magic” wonder is used to fix cars here. It’s really light and hard once it’s dry, but it gives you enough time to mold or carve it.
I kept the old figurine structures and started to play with them again. I haven’t had much time to finish, but this is what I have so far. Of course, there are a bunch of details I have to finish before I move on to the fun painting part.

{ Come on Mr. Poodle, keep climbing! }
I’m having trouble with the faces because I want something more real looking. Kind of like this, but of Miss and Mr. Poodle, instead.

Or something like these kinds of faces:

But I’m having such a hard time because I’m not good at recreating our faces really well. If I’m not happy with the way the faces are turning out, it will be better to go with something similar to this faceless option.

I’m really pleased with the way the bodies look and I don’t want to start all over again for the 3rd time! This story will be continued!
