A White Dress to Rehearse In

July 29th, 2009 @ 4:24 pm by Mrs. Mascara

I have been searching for a dress for our rehearsal dinner for a few months now. I originally wanted to take advantage of the fact that, as the bride, it is perfectly acceptable for me to wear a white dress. Alas, I don’t think that is in the cards for me. I have searched and searched and searched and cannot find a white dress that is semi-casual (since our rehearsal dinner is being held outside at Mr. M’s parents’ home) and that you cannot see through. I don’t think those two criteria are very stringent, but apparently they are.

Exhibit #1.

A White Dress to Rehearse In : wedding dress Blank Oh yeah, I can’t even show it to you. I fell in love with this cute strapless white and metallic silver BCBG dress at Lord & Taylor months ago, but they didn’t have my size. Anywhere in the US. I looked all over the internet for it as well and couldn’t find so much as a picture of it. Sad.

Exhibit #2. This dress made me swoon from the second I laid eyes on it.

I waited for it to go on sale online and ran (okay, drove) to the nearest Banana Republic to try it on. In the store it was only $39.99, and I grabbed the last one in my size. I tried in on and it fit perfectly. It was flowy and silky and wonderful. Imagine my disappointment when I looked in the fitting room mirror and could see everything I was wearing underneath it. I felt like I was wearing an invisible sheath. Again, sad.

Exhibit #3-23. I’m too lazy to find the pictures. I have tried on at least 20 dresses at various department stores and all of them are either not flattering or completely see-through. Sad, sad, sad…

I did try on a very cute dress from Anthropologie today that I have been eyeing for awhile now. One thing it is not? The bridal white I was going for in a rehearsal dress. But it is pretty, light-colored, semi-casual, and you can’t see through it! It’s also a dress I can wear again! Needless to say, I gave up on my dream white dress and bought this one instead.

So it’s not white. But metallic linen is close to white, right? Okay, no it’s not, but I like it anyway!

Did anyone else want a white rehearsal dinner dress? Where did you find one?

Oooooooooooo I love that Anthro dress. I don’t think it has to be white…metallic linen is close enough! :)

I tried on that one from banana republic. I also couldn’t believe how see-through it was!

I must have tried on 10 various white dresses. I agree, half were see-through. Two made me look pregant. and the rest were just blah. Maybe I’ll wear pink. or red. or any color other than white!

I guess a slip would be in order for the banana republic dress!

Quick question. Pleats like that make me look preggers…any issues with that in this dress? It’s super cute!

@April.H: I thought about a slip, but honestly I don’t know if a slip would do enough. You would have to wear 2 slips at least! And then I think you’d be able to see the difference between where the slip covered and where it didn’t!

@Miss Sapphire: I don’t think it makes me look pregnant?? lol I am very self conscious about front pleating too and I didn’t feel like there were issues with this dress.

that banana repbulic dress is cute-you could get one of those body slipcover things from victoria secret in a nude color-you can’t see anything through them. I will swear by them.

I Love Athropologie- that dress is adorable!

Nordstrom has a bunch of cute, casual white dresses. I am currently crushing on this beauty:

Adorable and can’t wait to see you in it! I always wonder that, too, why don’t people make white things that you can’t see through?

that dress is really cute!!! I wanted white too, but tried on this amazing lilac colored one that faded to white, and fell in love.. so the plain white I’m saving for the wedding day!

The dress you decided on is beautiful! I love the back of it. I never thought of wearing a white dress to the rehearsal. I’m hoping to find an adorable dress in my green color (chartreuse/apple/kiwi,etc) to wear the night before.

I love the Anthro dress, even more than the BR one. Great choice! BTW, if you wear a pair of spanx under white dresses, you can mitigate the see-throughness. Either the spanx boyshorts or the spanx slip will do.

Love that dress (so much in fact that I bought the same one last week to wear to a couple of weddings coming up!)!

Anthro came through for me with a white dress that I wore to my rehearsal dinner, and loved… but because it’s white I haven’t been able to wear it much since (seems like all I ever dress up for lately are wedding-related events!). You’ll get a lot of use out of the metallic one!

I bought mine online at target.com. Isaac Mizrahi was making bridesmaid dresses for target online for awhile. I snatched mine up when they all went on clearance online for like 10 bucks!

I think it is fine to wear a darker white color. A lot of brides wear ivory and even light gold on their wedding day now! So I don’t see why a light metallic color wouldn’t be acceptable for the rehearsal too.
