Miss Poodle's Picture
Miss Poodle, Santiago, Chile/San Bernardino, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Industrial & Web Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Firefighter & Mountain Patrol Engagement Date: February 25, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Mr. P's Grandparents’ Ranch About Me: I’m a Chilean girl who's crazy about nature and swimming. I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.

How Cute is This?

July 29th, 2009 @ 11:08 am by Miss Poodle

I found these paper cut illustrations from Designer Yulia Brodskaya on the SeeSaw blog, and I think they are awesome!

{ Image Source (Link) }

Just imagine how cute the Save the Dates could look! (If you have a very limited number of guests.)

Because I have some recycled purple and green paper left over, I decided to make a sign! Well, not exactly a sign, but a heart with our names on it like a monogram. I thought it could look cute on our guest book table. After the wedding we could hang it in the house and I think it could look really cute!

I couldn’t wait and I started drawing minutes after I saw the pictures. This is my first attempt at the sign. I can’t wait until I have my camera back so I can take real pictures instead of the ones I’ve been uploading from my phone.

After drawing the outside, I started playing with the lines that I’ll be using as guides for the real thing. As you can see, this is just the guide for my first attempt, so stay tuned to see how this next project ends up!

Have you ever quilled paper? Any tips?

I love the look of quilled paper. It’s actually not that complicated, it just takes a lot of time. Sukura (the gelly pen folks) make a glue pen that works great for these types of projects. It writes like a pen, but applies just a thin line of glue. I would definitely look into one.

In high school I did a month-long independent study on quilling. It was insanely fun! Just be warned that it is super time intensive.

One of my projects was a photo frame. I painted a wooden frame and then quilled at the bottom right edge. If you had an ephoto to display you could do your heart at the top of a frame then swap out for a wedding photo after the wedding. Then if you get sick of looking at your wedding photo in 10 years you could stick in a mirror!

As for tips, you’ll probably want to make all of your pieces before you glue them down on your card stock/background. That way you can see how the colors look together and the swirls work together before committing to a final design.

Good luck! I can’t wait to see the final goods!

My mom quilled paper in the late 70s, but always flowers, never anything else. I remember her sitting in my music lessons with a piece of styrofoam on her lap, with a puddle of white glue and bristling with pins.

Beautiful. My sister’s friend made her a get well card using this technique.

(But Darwin was so right.)

While the quilting is amazing, I am disturbed by one of the illustrations. “Darwin was wrong” with a picture of a tree is referring to when Darwin first conceived of the idea of evolution. A page in his journal has the words “I think” and a sketch of a little tree. This tree was the beginning of his explanation of the evolutionary relationship between organisms: http://darwin-online.org.uk/life10b.html

Scientists now think the tree of life is just symbolic since life and evolutionary processes are really much more complex. I don’t know if this artist has a political agenda, but a lot of creationists have used this as justification for removing the teaching of evolution from classrooms. Just thought I should point this out. End of soapbox.

@usflilbull: That could be really helpful!!

@runningbee: Thank you so much for sharing that! and the tips ;)

@Mrs. Emerald, @Miss Cloud, @marylizbeth: I have no idea how did I miss Pengy’s table numbers! thank you so much for the link!!! :)

@charia, @Kelly: I do know she did that quilting for the cover of the “NewScientist” magazine, but I have no idea what her view about the issue is or the information that’s inside the magazine. I am a fan of her work as an I illustrator and the awesome quilting technique showed in all of her work.

The effect of the quilting is gorgeous! (Though I, like several others am a bit confused by the “Darwin is wrong” piece.)
