A Modern Blessing

Wouldn’t it be a sign of the times if the reader at your ceremony got up there with his or her Kindle in hand? While I don’t anticipate that happening at our wedding, it would definitely make me chuckle. And, it would most definitely put a modern twist on the proceedings… don’t worry, we’re not going to take things quite that far!

In any event, Mr. S and I finally asked one of my good friends - and college roommate of two years - to read during the ceremony. I had wanted to ask her for a while, but we don’t see each other very often and I didn’t want to do it over email. I instead chose to ask her toward the end of my bachelorette party… to which she said she’d love to, but if I would ask her again when I was sober. I assured her I was completely serious with my question, but did follow up with an email the next day.

I came across the most beautiful reading that I believe we are going to use…

“Blessing for a Marriage”, James Dillet Freeman

May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a marriage should bring, and may life grant you also patience, tolerance, and understanding.

May you always need one another - not so much to fill your emptiness as to help you to know your fullness. A mountain needs a valley to be complete; the valley does not make the mountain less, but more; and the valley is more a valley because it has a mountain towering over it. So let it be with you and you.

May you need one another, but not out of weakness.

May you want one another, but not out of lack.

May you entice one another, but not compel one another.

May you embrace one another, but not out encircle one another.

May you succeed in all important ways with one another, and not fail in the little graces.

May you look for things to praise, often say, “I love you!” and take no notice of small faults. If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope to have good sense enough to take the first step back.

May you enter into the mystery which is the awareness of one another’s presence - no more physical than spiritual, warm and near when you are side by side, and warm and near when you are in separate rooms or even distant cities.

May you have happiness, and may you find it making one another happy.

May you have love, and may you find it loving one another.

I absolutely love it. It’s a little more modern than other readings I’ve seen and since we’re having a ceremony that we’d categorize as more spiritual than religious, this reading, to me, is a perfect fit.

Have you chosen something special for your reader(s) during the ceremony?

We really wanted something fun for our wedding reading. We finally settled on A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton. It had everyone laughing.

My very good friend will be doing a reading at our wedding, but I have left it completely up to her. (Gulp) She said she will probably do a combination of something she finds and her own words. I love that it will be new to us as well as our guests.

This is a great reading! We haven’t decided yet, but were thinking of maybe having a reading from Kahlil Gibran.

At my cousin’s wedding a friend did a reading and read it from his iphone haha. He seemed to have some problems keeping his place during it. It was funny but also kind of awkward!

My sister-in-law, who was my husband’s honor attendant aka our “Best Girl” used her iPhone for reference notes during her toast at our reception. It was cute, funny, and totally her.

Beautiful reading choice.

I use those final lines (May you have happiness - and may you finding it making one another happy - may you have love - and may you find it loving one another) as the final remark in 95% of my wedding ceremonies. I just LOVE it, and think it is so appropriate and so loving.

I also am a fan of my Kindle, and have considering uploading my ceremonies on to it, but I think a nice leather binder comes out better in pictures than my Kindle (plus, I’d be so nervous about it dying!).

I love the iphone or kindle idea and might actually do it! Thanks for the idea! I think it would be so funny and modern. I can just imagine how many people are going to go home and say, “I was at this wedding this past week and they did the readings from their iphones!”

Great pick! We HAD to pick Bible passages for my Catholic wedding, but there were plenty I liked, so it worked. It was my “heathen” spouse that insisted on certain readings and their wording! Go figure.

Our minister always uses his iPhone. Weddings, baptisms, sermons. He’s so great :)

We’re using a selection from Khalil Gibran and a poem entitled “Love” by Roy Croft for our junior bridesmaid to read. :)
