Alternative Groom’s Cake

July 30th, 2009 @ 3:14 pm by Mrs. Beagle

We’ve decided on our wedding cake (yes… there will be a post on this soon), but in the South, the groom usually has a cake, too. From my experience, the groom’s cake is usually chocolate… but Mr. Beagle hates chocolate.

In some cases, the groom’s cake also represents his hobbies/likes/interests.

While the idea of representing Mr. Beagle through a cake is nice, I have no idea what type of cake I would get for him. He doesn’t have a sport he follows regularly, he’s not a “gamer”, he doesn’t have a favorite team and frankly, he doesn’t really like sweets anyways (weird, I know). So I think in lieu of a typical groom’s cake, I’m going to set up a platter of these:

Bunuelos. They are a thinly fried “bread” that is topped with sugar and sometimes honey. Although Mr. Beagle is not big on sweets, he loves these. He will often recall the bunuelos his grandmother made, which were very delicious. Although these may not compare to hers, I think he’ll like the gesture.

Are you having a groom’s cake? What traditions are you putting your own spin on?

This, I think, is a much better alternative to the “typical” grooms cake. You both get to honor his heritage :)

While my FI does like a lot of things we could have a cake shaped in he hates cake. I told him he could have a tower of Krispy Kreme donuts and that made him fairly happy :)

Mr. St. Patrick would love your Krispy Kreme idea, DesignerBee! He is getting a giant lego, though! It’s a surprise.

Those bunuelos look awesome! I think your hubby AND guests will love those. We didn’t do a groom’s cake, but if we had, I think it probably would have ended up being the shape of Michigan Stadium. :)

My groom hates chocolate cake too! The only sweet he likes is lemon pound cake, so our baker is trying out some recipes to find something really delicious.

they look super yummy but I’ve never had them, or even heard of them before. Where could I find some?

@LatteLove: I know they can definately be found in Mexican bakeries (Austin has many bakeries like this… so they’re fairly easy to come by), but sometimes Mexican restaurants sell them as desserts too.
@sunsail: They are crunchier than funnel cakes and thinner,, but they are very good!

YUM! I love bunuelos!

We’re doing Ice Cream, Blue Bell has a new flavor, Groom’s Cake, so I jumped right on it and ordered it in bulk to serve at the wedding since my fiance loves Ice Cream!

@LatteLove: I’d never heard of them either until last fall when we were in Austin to visit some of the hubby’s college buddies who still live there. They are really yummy!

I think that’s a wonderful option for a “groom’s cake”. We had a cake buffet so we didn’t have a bride or groom’s cake per-se but we did each pick out our 3 faves for the buffet

I feel the same way…my guy wasn’t into anything particularly transferable to a cake, & I couldn’t bear the thought of translating one of his nerdy hobbies into a cake for all the world to see. I was planning on having one at the rehearsal dinner, but they provided us with a host of yummy desserts. We probably could have used one at the wedding–our cake was such a hit, everyone wanted seconds, but we ran out! I think the yummy bunuelos are the way to go.

Mr. Politico’s groom cake is a red velvet decorated like a pilsner glass from the bar we met in DC. However, our “wedding cake” is actually five tiers (think cupcake tower) of chocoate dipped mini cannolis! :)

My fiance is one of those rare people who doesn’t like chocolate too. He keeps saying he wants a poppy seed cake, which I think is kind of odd for a wedding. But given our families poppy seed will go well with our heritage & I’m starting to think is suits us.

Mr Sunbeam is also not very into cake. For his birthday he often request a birthday pizza! I guess I could stack some pizza’s for him, but we might just stick with our wedding cake. I think the Bunuelos will be great as a grooms cake, they look like they stack well too if you want to mimic the cake look!

What a great idea! I’m sure he will love that :)
I wanted to do a groom’s cake but Mr Frenchie told me he didn’t want one b/c the wedding cake was our cake and he thought it was weird to have his own. While I was a little bummed it made things easier for me :)

Mr. Riley LOVES red velvet cake so I think I’m going use that as his groom cake.

But I have a large concentration of family in PA and one food item that EVERYONE loves are Whoopie Pies (which are two small round chocolate cakes sandwiching a sweat creamy frosting -think cross of icing and whipped cream- ) that we are going to try to incorporate… maybe in the OOT bags??
