About Mrs. Sunbeam

Hey Mista’ DJ!

July 30th, 2009 @ 5:07 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

Well, a few weekends ago we got our DJ!

(source)

Hello, Macbook Pro. For those of you who keep up on these things, you might know the new faster CHEAPER Macbook Pros came out a little while ago. To be exact, they came out two days after we bought ours. Boo. Luckily, Apple lets you make an exchange if a new version of your suddenly old and decrepit laptop comes out within two weeks of your purchase. Macbook, we loved you but we love your updated twin more! Our new computer will be acting as our DJ for the wedding, and it came with a free backup singer!

Mr. Sunbeam has had a second gen iPod forever, therefore the backup singer, who I got for free since I am a student, is his. You’re welcome! So this is our DJ team. We had been making music lists on Seeqpod.com, but it looks like that site isn’t coming back any time soon, so we’ll have to pick up and rebuild. So many playlists - lost! For those of you that don’t know, the site lets you listen to music that it found playing in various spots on the internet. No downloading occurred to my knowledge. I suggest using Playlist.com if you are looking for a replacement site.

We were fans of an iPod wedding from the start. An iPod wedding will not only save money, it will also prevent a strange DJ from taking over our wedding and harassing our guests, which we have witnessed before. We realize DJs also make useful announcements and you DO need someone who can be in charge of music so everyone, including Mr. Sunbeam and I, isn’t running to the laptop every 5 minutes. For that task, we have a Mr. DJ!

I had no idea his Facebook picture was so crazy. Very DJ appropriate. Mr. D, one of Mr. Sunbeam’s good friends from college, has agreed to take on the position of emcee with enthusiasm! Thanks to him we’ll have someone to make much needed announcements during the beginning of the reception, from there we hope our playlists will take everyone onto the dance floor and into the evening! Hopefully Mr. D will leave his furs at home.

We’ve also rented sound equipment, and let me tell you, it pays to shop around! We got quotes from several sound rental places ranging from $275 to $675! Needless to say, we went for $275 from Hubbard Music. They will give us all the sound equipment, laptop hookups, and two sound tech guys for the evening, mics, all that good stuff. And the price included setup and tear down! Sweeeet. I’m not going to include the cost of the laptop under music costs for our wedding, since we would have purchased that either way, so $275 for music is a huge budget savings over hiring a DJ!

How many iPod weddings are out there? Do you have any song suggestions that would get you bustin’ a move on the dance floor that we should consider?

We plan to do an IPOD reception as well…would much rather put the money towards a great photographer than a potentially annoying DJ!

We did an iTunes wedding. Email me, I will share a Google doc with all or our songs on it. People said they enjoyed the music… for what that is worth.

Our best friends are doing an ipod wedding in Costa Rica this fall & then an ipod reception back in Denver as well. I think it’s a great idea and am happy they will be guinea pigs … because it does make me a little nervous to try this for our wedding.

Thanks for the tip about shopping around for the sound system. Our venue does not offer one, so that could potentially big a significant expense! Looking forward to hear how it goes with Mr D’s DJ ability… & his wardrobe!

iPod wedding here! We honestly couldn’t justify spending $500 plus on a DJ, especially when we didn’t even want him/her making any announcements and such. Well be using our trust MacBook as well, and having our wedding coordinator make sure that our special music cues (i.e. first dance) run smoothly.

I think it’s a great idea! I have been thinking about doing one, and am still on the fence, but we’ll probably end up doing the ipod wedding. Good song? Lady Gaga - Just Dance

But that song is a little obvious, right? ;)

Yes, I totally recommend the iPod DJ, especially if you and your fiance know what kind of music you and your guests would like at your wedding. The DJ and the music totally sets the tone, which can be good or bad! If you know what you want, there is no reason to pay ungodly sums to some random DJ who doesn’t know your taste at all just because he’s “professional”.

We are also having an ipod wedding!! FI is a musician and used to even have his own DJ business, so we have free access to the best equipment…and lots of music! It just makes perfect sense!!

Where do you find the info about exchanging your mac for a new one? The same thing happened to us, and I’d love to have the faster, new and improved version! Thanks! And fabulous idea!

We are doing the same exact thing as you - and I bought the same MacBook Pro and got the iPod Touch! My previous Mac laptop, the iBook G4, needed replacing anyway, so it was a perfect expense in my budget!

We are having a small wedding, without a bridal party…so we are going to switch between playlists ourselves and not have an emcee! Best of luck :)

Gosh, what awesomeness! I wish I had a friend who could emcee the event, because that would be a total seller for me! I’m still nervous that I’ll have a creepy dj taking over…eeeeek!
