Pretty Fonts with Glyphs

July 30th, 2009 @ 11:35 am by Mrs. Penguin

The glyph discussion is not new on Weddingbee. I was personally first introduced to them by Mrs. Licorice here, and ever since, have been smitten. But I thought I’d bring it up again now that I’m fresh off of finishing my friend Robin’s invites!

If you’re unfamiliar with the glyph palette, then here’s a quick layman’s rundown. There are certain fonts out there that allow you to “manipulate” certain (or all) of the letters in the alphabet, to create a customized look for your words. The result is a really custom look for any set of letter combinations, that can be switched up to create a variety of different looks for the same word. A better definition of the glyph palette is here. So, for instance, using the font Burgues Script and the word “Penguin”, you can get the word to look different, tens of times over if you’d like:

There are a bunch of fonts out there that have glyphs, but here are a few of my favorites:

Affair

Candy Script

Ministry Script

Burgues Script

Buffet Script

Bickham Script

To access a font’s glyphs (if it has them), you’ll need Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or QuarkXPress 7.0. I think all these design products have limited trial access, so if you don’t own them, you can still get anywhere from a 30-90 day trial of them for free, and get your invites done in that time period! The fonts are unfortunately ridiculously expensive though, but I’ve used the ones I have a lot, and find it hard to use any others because these are so cool. :)

Which is your favorite? Candy Script makes me instantly happy any time I use it!

Does anyone know where to get these free fonts? Also, can you use Coral Draw for glyphs?

I’m a font junkie! I love, love fonts! I have about 20+ that I’ve invested in. Burgues & Feel script are one of my favorites.

I always wondered how to access those glyphs. Is there a free program where I can access them? Or only the above will let me?

Timely post! I recently purchased the Burgues font but couldn’t figure out how to access the glyphs. Is it possible to access them in Publisher? If so, how?

Those are some expensive fonts! But Sudtipos has some very talented designers. Adios Script is just goooooorgeous, I wish I could justify purchasing it.
