Veil Va-Va-Voom: Part Two

July 30th, 2009 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Star

You might remember my post about the first part of my veil saga where I told you all how I made my own birdcage veil. If you don’t, that’s okay. It was so long ago! It took me a bit longer than anticipated to finish my second veil, so you’ll have to excuse the gap between parts one and two of this story!

Anyways, I promised I’d show you a picture of me wearing the birdcage that I made:

I’m still working on the placement, which makes a shockingly big difference in how the veil looks. I’m thinking I might need to bobby pin it to my head in a place or two, as well.

I also showed you the vintage French lace that I bought from Etsy in my post about my somethings. As it turns out, hand stitching that lace to the bottom of my veil took several weeks of painstaking effort. But I’m very pleased with the end result!

I wanted a shoulder-length veil because the detail on the back of my dress is too beautiful to cover up (I know, I know…). It was surprisingly difficult to find a shoulder-length veil! I guess they’re really out of vogue. That was what prompted me to make my own veils in the first place.

I’m really glad I made them, though, because now they’re both so very much my own.

The trick now is just to figure out how and when to wear each of my veils. I know it’s become acceptable to wear a traditional veil during the ceremony and throw on a birdcage for the reception, but the birdcage I made covers my whole face, which isn’t exactly ideal for eating/talking/kissing/dancing/etc.

I had thought that maybe I would just wear the shoulder-length veil and use the birdcage solely for pictures, but I kind’ve feel like I worked too hard on the birdcage to sell it short like that.

Momma Star suggested that I actually reverse things and wear the birdcage for the ceremony and have Mr. Star do a cute “lift the veil” thing before the kiss, which I think would be really fun. Then I could wear the other veil for the reception. The only thing that bothers me about that plan is that wearing a veil that falls behind me really makes me feel like a bride. Like, I cried in the salon when I put on a veil for the first time. So, I’m torn.

What do you think? How should I plan to use both veils? Do you have two; and if so, how are you wearing them?

Wowza! Both of your veils are stunning!!! Great job!

This is a tough conundrum. On the one hand, the birdcage is so fabulous, but you really can’t deny the tears.

I would say, wear the longer veil the whole time. Use the birdcage for a trash the dress shoot, or something. Because (from experience) a birdcage can be kind of awkward to peel off your face for the first kiss. Especially if you’ve bobby-pinned it down. And you have a FULL ON birdcage. The other veil is so sweet, and the tears and all- you can’t not wear it! :)

The birdcage is insanely beautiful on you! I’d say use the birdcage for your reception and the longer veil for the actual ceremony. That way, you’ll get photos of both veils on the big day. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

That is tough, because they are both so pretty, but I’m with powder puff on this one, go with the longer. I was watching whose wedding is it anyway (because I just can’t get enough haha) and they did the turn back with the birdcage and it just seemed akward and not very easy. Either way at least you know you will look great!

I LOVE your birdcage veil! I love that it actually covers your whole face and not just the forehead. It’s so mysterious!

Uh, I LOVE both of the veils you made! I wore only a birdcage (which I won on Weddingbee!) to the ceremony only (then I rocked a ever-cliched Etsy hair flower at the reception). I longed for a more bride-y veil–ala the fifties “poufy” veil, but it just didn’t go with my 40’s vintage-inspired gown. I like your mom’s idea, but it is nice to feel bride-y, especially when you are young!

They’re both great. I think my suggestion would be to go with wearing the birdcage for photos and then do the long veil for the ceremony. Is there a way to alter the birdcage quickly (maybe with some pins) so that it covers your face in the photos and then you could pin it back and put it back on for the reception? That way you could wear it, but it wouldn’t be covering your face all day?

birdcage for ceremony. short shoulder veil for everything else because then it will be out of your way and you can dance, eat, and kiss easily!

Maybe try on both with your dress and see how you feel?

Or, would you be up for altering the birdcage so you could wear both? If the cage netting stopped around your nose line, your husband could still kiss you during the ceremony, and you could easily eat and drink at the reception?

Sorry, I meant - would you be up for altering the birdcage so you could wear both together?

I think I am with Mrs. Powder Puff. I think you should wear the birdcage veil for your photos that day and if you do a trash the dress shoot and wear the long one for the ceremony and reception. They are both beautiful and whatever you decide will be pefect fo ryou!

Wow, beautiful work! If I was smart enough to have had two veils, I would have worn the longer one for our ceremony and some photos afterward. Then, I would also wear the birdcage for some photos and for the reception, or at least part of it. :)

Oh wait, the birdcage covers your whole face? If so I wouldn’t wear it for the reception, maybe for just some photos. Can’t have a veil covering your face when it’s time for delish food and cake! :)

Oh, that is a hard decision. I am a really big fan of birdcage veils, but your shoulder length veil is very pretty as well! You worked so hard on both of them, they should have equal play time at your wedding!

ditto PP’s advice. The birdcage is so sassy, it would be really fun for a bridal shoot or a TTD

Everyone is 100% right BOTH of these veils that you MADE (OMG) are gorgeous!!!

I read in a previous post of yours that you were doing kind of a “parade” to your reception venue - are you still doing that?

If so, I think it’d be nice to wear the shoulder length veil to the ceremony, take pictures with it & the bird cage (although I’m not sure of your day of timeline) and wear the bird cage in the parade! I love the parade idea and I think the birdcage veil would really ‘go’ with a parade. Then you either wear the shoulder length or nothing for the reception (I don’t know if ppl typically wear veils to the reception, but I think it’d drive me nuts).

Either way, I’m just excited about your veils!

@sweetpeaj: Wow, I really love that idea! I might just steal it! Shoulder length veil for ceremony, birdcage for parade, pretty hairpiece that I didn’t previously know what to do with for reception…this could work! You rock!

Wow, at first I thought the picture of the birdcage was just a stock model shot!

Yes, wear two! I was originally very drawn to shoulder-length veils…I think they’re retro and spunky :-)

My vote is for the shoulder length veil. Maybe it’s just because the birdcage veil is a new concept to me, but it just doesn’t seem as “bridey” to me.

Oh gosh, they are both so pretty, I see why it is hard for you to decide! I looooove the birdcage…you have to wear it at some point for sure!!!! I hope you figure it out!

Both of your veils are freaking adorable! I think the birdcage for the ceremony could work. But how is Mr. Star going to lift it? I’m afraid the veil might pop off or something when he tries to lift it. Maybe if you placed it differently, it wouldn’t have to cover your whole face and you could wear the birdcage for the reception.
