Chugging the Crazy Juice…

July 31st, 2009 @ 5:39 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

I saw this earlier, and thought, ‘WOW…

source

… BEAUTIFUL!’

Maybe it just looks like a bunch of yarn to you, but to me, that looks like soft, supple, delectably cozy wedding-wear to me! So, I did what any bride drunk off the crazy juice does. I spent time thinking about it.

Bad idea. I like it. It’s pretty. Here, this might help you visualize -

is.aspx

source

Yup. Still cute. Still like it. Crap. Well… I’m going to be cold on the September evening, aren’t I? I’ll need some sort of… SHRUG or WRAP, won’t I? Of course I will. Don’t be silly, little Bear Cub.

I couldn’t stop with just one pattern. Oh NOOO… I had to check out my usual free-pattern fix - Knitty. And OF COURSE there are some pretties on there I started drooling over…

Seascape

“Muir”

and then I fell into the rabbit hole of lace. Ohhh I love lace. Lace so prettyyyy…. (remember, I’m still boozed up on the crazy juice).

I have the yarn. I guess you know by now I’m a knitter. I used to knit a lot. With knitting, comes yarn hoarding. I have a LOT of yarn. So much beautiful yarn, begging to be donned as a wedding day arm-warmer.

In particular, I have about 7 shades of this yarn:

source

No joke. I have 7 shades, and 10 skeins (balls) of each color. 70% merino wool & 30% silk? Yes, please! It feels so good, I just want to rub it on my cheeks. Mmm… yarn..

RIGHT. WEDDINGS. Gotta sober up here a bit.

This looks wedding-y to me.

“River” by Rowan

I started knitting this particular pattern a few years ago, but that’s a lot of lace, and I ended up not having the time.

Hmm… this is sounding like a wacko idea. Knit a lace shawl/scarf/shrug, with less than 2 months before the wedding? Am I crazy?

Knitters in the hive - how much effort/time do you think it would be to knit a lace wrap thing? Is it worth it?
All you lovely buzzing members of the hive - are these shrugs/wraps really beautiful, or am I off my rocker? Should I save my time, or invest in a beautiful hand-knit wrap?

I love the idea of a beautiful knitted wrap — but maybe you could outsource this one? Just to drive yourself a little less crazy!

I’m not a knitter so I have NO CLUE how long that would take someone - for me 12 yrs ;-)
But it is beautiful!

You have the same idea I have! My wedding is in May next year, but in Wyoming, the weather is SO unpredictable! It could SNOW, for crying out loud! It has happened! And since the whole shebang is outside, I started looking into wraps as well! I’m loving the chunky knit shawls! With a cute stick pin… Yum! I knit a little, but nothing as detailed as I’d like on my big day. So I may outsource.

it’s a beautiful idea, but as a fellow knitter, i’d say no to making your own. u know it’s a lot of work, and unless you have time to knit a difficult pattern (counting stitches!!) it’s just gonna be stressful.

I saw a beautiful (round) lace wrap used as a veil on Ravelry! I always thought it would be cool to take it off and use as a wrap at the reception.

As far as time goes, some people like having the excuse to stop doing everything else and force themselves to sit down and focus on something - afterall, it is for the wedding. But at this point it really just depends on you - how much you have left to do and how fast you will (realistically) knit.

Good luck!

i’ve never been able to knit lace simply because I apparently can’t count when i knit…. but if you’re a proficient counter I say go for it!

you’re not crazy,–I say do it! Knitting is a wonderfully relaxing thing to do, and it’s easy to multi-task while watching tv!

The inspiration you found is lovely!

Ah yes, I also drank a lot of crazy juice! ;) I don’t have any knitting experience, so I will let the others in the hive advise you.

As a fellow knitter I completely understand wanting to have something you’ve made for the day, I’m trying to decide what kind of shawl to make myself for my wedding next August. In Texas. I must be drinking some of your crazy juice to think I’ll need a shawl in the hundred degree heat!

I find knitting very calming it really helps me destress at the end of a rough day, and if you’re like me in that regard I would say to go for it. If you don’t finish it in time you’ll have something to work on during the fall, no big deal.

Just to share, I did this lace pattern for my mother recently and turned it into a shawl pattern by casting on 95 stitches and doing the repeat seven times instead of five. It only took me fifteen days to finish and it turned out beautifully. It’s very repetitive and so easy to memorize the pattern. You should take a look, it might be a bit simpler than the ones you posted above.

Good luck!

As a knitter, I’m gonna vote for outsourcing it. I love knitting, and I find it very relaxing, but…if you didn’t have time for that pattern before, I kinda think you don’t have time for it now.

Of course, you could always start the project, and enjoy working on it, without really putting the pressure on yourself to finish it…we knitters love halfway done projects!

Do you think you have time? Have you knit lace before? I find lace goes really fast for me (especially with non lace weight yarn!). DO IT!! BUT don’t be upset if it doesn’t happen or come together in the end - but you’ll never know unless you give it a try!

Muir gets my vote.

They are beautiful! I’m a junior knitter, so I know that this would take me a long time. Still, I undertook some crazy projects with weeks to go before the wedding and somehow managed to get all/most of them done! You can do it!

Do it! I am lucky as my mom is a knitter and has already knitted for the entire wedding party and is now working on my shawl. I just love the idea of the cozy texture in the wedding photos. Maybe you could do an open pattern on large needles? Lace is HARD, but there are many beautiful, simpler things you can do.

Knitter here! Check out ravelry.com for some patterns, I personally like it better than knitty. Lace goes quickly I think as long as you maybe try something out that ISN’T laceweight. For me, knitting is a huuuuge stress reliever so I think it’ll help!

I plan on doing something like this.. with three months left I should try and figure that out, huh? :)

I agree that knitting can be relaxing, but I don’t consider even two months enough time to finish it. Not for me personally. However, I do not knit I crochet, but I’ve never finished a project in less than two months except for some drawer sachets. My grandmother however could do something like that in no time at all. I guess it depends on your level of skill?

I adore knitting and find it relaxing and if you are the same way, I’d give it a shot. I would recommend taking a look at one of hte patterns and picking something which is either easy or the pattern is pretty loose. I don’t know if I could do the first or second with just two months, but the third and fourth don’t seem so bad!

I knitted my own wedding shawl (seen here: http://knittinggoddess.typepad.com/nicole_the_knitting_godde/2009/03/fo-friday-swallowtail-shawl.html). It’s very lacy and took me about 3 weeks on and off. I’m not sure if I’m going to wear it yet, maybe just for the get away?

You can still make a very delicate shawl but in fingering weight yarn. I bet you could pull off a nice stole in a month if you could knit on it an hour each day. I really want to knit something for my wedding but until I figure out the dress I won’t know if I can. Oh! You could knit yourself a garter :) That shouldn’t take more than a week!

I love it, go ahead & try to finish the one you started, especially if it’s in that red shade! If you start to get stressed & can’t finish-no biggie-You don’t NEED it. You can always wear it later. I love the sweater/shawl/shrug look for weddings. Plus anything you can re-wear is a big plus! I got a fab deal on ebay on a light blue sweater that looks remarkably similar to “seascape,” but hello, I got married 6/27 in Chicago–so yeah, inferno-it was one of my something blues. (I considered wearing it over my boob-a-licious dress in the church, but I wanted everyone to see my gorgeous gown. Note: Do not gain 20#s before your wedding, & you won’t have to worry about “church cleavage”!) My mother was the knitter–it is one of the things I miss most about her being gone. I know she would have knitted a garter or shawl for my big day.

OH! I am so happy to see a Bee who is a knitter. At any rate- as a super obsessed knitter myself, I would say you have to really know yourself for this. Are you comfortable with lace already? Have you ever knitted a shawl or shrug in 2 months time before? If the answer is yes… then do it. You’ll have the adrenaline to get you through, and it’ll be fine.

But if you haven’t… spare yourself some pain. Don’t set yourself a goal that you can’t finish, it would just upset you for no good reason. Knit a little garter instead, and call it a day.

This comes from the girl who decided that pshaw, knitting three shawls for her bridesmaids between mid-July and mid-November would be a piece of cake. I’m actually on track so far (almost done with shawl 1), but still. I know I’m setting myself up for a little heartache and shoulder-ache from knitting that fast… but I’m super confident in my lace knitting, so not too worried.

Are you on Ravelry? Checking those patterns out on Rav can be a great way to see how much time they really have been taking other knitters. It’s a good guide as to how hard they really are!

Make you’re own, since you’re clearly a knitter. Just don’t choose an overly complicated pattern. I think the first version is adorable, would keep you the warmest, and maybe is simpler than the very lacy ones?

depends on how much of a perfectionist you are! i’m not an advanced knitter, but i know lace patterns are tricky. either risk ripping back mistakes (time’s ticking!) or just keep going! :P

i bet you’re a much better knitter than i am!

Honestly? In time for September?
I think I’d kill myself to exhaustion if I tried knitting something that large scale in such a short amount of time.
And I love to knit lace, but unless you have every night free until the wedding without a lot of activities planned - since lace is definitely not a crowd project, I’d say nope.
That sounds like such a downer, because they ARE gorgeous, but I think that might be too much to bite off in these last few weeks before your big day.

Any chance that a local shop might have something on display that you love that you could ‘rent’ for the wedding?

One of my bridesmaids made me this shawl (http://www.oneplanetyarnandfiber.com/Hanami_Pattern_Download_9p/plt-pat-hanamidl.htm ) as a wedding gift for me (out of a silk/cashmere blend yarn). It’s an incredibly complex pattern, and she’s been knitting for around 15 years now; it took her one month to do, mostly because any mistake she made, she’d have to go back to fix it. So if you chose a simpler pattern, or one that would hide your mistakes at the very least, then you would have time. At least the shawls you are looking at have a repeating pattern to them! :-D And don’t forget, when choosing which one to do, that you’ll have much more on your plate than just the shawl as you get closer to the wedding! Pick a pattern that you love that you can get done sooner rather than later, and you should be all set! Good luck! :-D

I vote to outsource. I’m a novice knitter, but I guarantee that I would not be able to knock out something like that with 2 months to go (along with doing all the necessary things like eating and sleeping). :)

I love the idea, but I’m not a knitter so I have no clue how long/arduous it would be as a task. =) Good luck either way!
