House About Me: I’m a self-proclaimed grammar geek who loves singing (like, really belting it) in the car. My mister and I are planning a vibrant summer soiree celebrating our passions – including food and Philly – and when we make it official, we’ll have been together for eight years! About Mrs. Bruschetta

Letterpressed and Stressed

July 31st, 2009 @ 3:59 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

I won’t mince words: Our invitation design process was aggravating. For this reason, I won’t be sharing the name of the designer we worked with to create and print our letterpress suite. (Feel free, though, to PM me with specific questions; I do think it’s important not to sugarcoat the situation.)

Creating this design was stressful — it took close to 20 very different versions before ours resembled the ideas I had shared with the designer over eight weeks earlier, at the start of our collaboration. (For example, recommending consistency in the number of dots accenting the invitation and reception card and asking our designer to fix the kerning between Mr. Bruschetta’s first, middle and last names on the invitation.)

Once Etsy led me to our awesome calligrapher, and I fell for one of her styles, I knew I’d found the perfect element to weave throughout our wedding. We featured Fran’s gorgeous “Cocktail” lettering throughout our suite — she even dreamed up what I’ll call “Cocktail 2.0″, incorporating some extra swirls and twirls, so our names on the invitation would stand apart slightly from the rest of the script-y words and phrases.

Truly, Fran’s contributions are my absolute favorite part of our invitations. Her lettering practically pops off the page, and coordinates perfectly with the “Cocktail” addresses adorning the envelopes.

And, while like I mentioned above, our invitations came with more drama than a soap opera, I won’t go into any more of that here — because aren’t you just so curious to see what they look like?!

(Please note: The suite I photographed includes pieces the mister and I handpicked so we would have a keepsake that is as close to perfect as possible. You’ll see rich coloring — because my new camera is great! — that I enhanced with some very basic photo editing. I’ve also [rather poorly] covered up information I’d prefer remain private. Most of the other pieces we received had much more inconsistent coloring, and a number also arrived with damaged corners after being shipped with inadequate packaging/padding.)

This is the whole suite together. Fran indulged me with a faux address on an outer envelope bearing our Weddingbee monikers so I could show off her beautiful lettering as much as possible. All the letterpressed text is a very deep purple, as is the envelope liner.

The actual invitation, which reveals another part of my oft-mispronounced name. (Since I’m keeping my maiden name, I opted to include all three!) I hate that I had to cover up our last names — they include some of my favorite “Cocktail 2.0″ lettering!

The reception card, which is slightly smaller than the invitation, includes specifics about our two evening venues, and directs guests to our wedding blog for additional information.

Although I’d been admiring creatively-worded RSVP cards, we opted for a more simply-phrased one — we wanted the focus to be on the entree selection (big surprise, huh?). Trust me, all three are incredibly delicious, and come with much longer descriptions than we were able to fit on the response card!

And here’s how everything looked before sealing the outer envelope.

In addition to our family and friends, we included several VIPs on our mailing list. (I took the next two pictures inside the post office, after explaining to the postal worker that I needed these shots for a wedding blog.)

The moral of the story? Well, I guess it’s that you get what you pay for. Deliciously deep impressions and consistent coloring comes with a hefty price tag we couldn’t justify. (The picture below shows the variation in the orange ink — which is more pronounced in person than in photographs — that was an issue throughout the suite. We were hoping the orange ink would match the shade of our return envelopes, but on some pieces, it’s much lighter — almost a honey-ish yellow.)

We weren’t totally pleased with the quality of the pieces, yet we continue to hear wonderful compliments from our guests.

I’ll be working with another stationer to design and print the other paper products for our wedding, including menus, program covers and thank you notes. I can’t wait until these are completed, and look forward to sharing them with the hive!

Anyone else so smitten with letterpress that you couldn’t resist it for your wedding invitations?

Ed’s note: Please note that this invitation suite was inspired by Smock’s Rhon design.  Bella Figura/Smock asked us to clarify that the printing here was not done by Smock, but by a separate and outside letterpress company with which they have no affiliation.

I, personally, adore letterpress. The texture of it is just… delicious! But it’s not in our budget, so - no letter press for me.

I love your calligraphy! it is so fun and so elegant. Your names really stand out on the invites.

Sorry to hear about your invite issues - but the end results are beautiful.

Beautiful! I love them and the colors really pop. We’re doing the same thing with making guests choose their entree choices–how are you then going to let the caterer know what guests chose? Stickers? I was going to post this q to the board, actually but figured i’d start here. Thanks!

I had to have letterpress too! I was so excited when our friendor was about to get it for a great deal :) We were lucky that we didn’t have to pay for his services too, b/c if we did it certainly would have been out of our budget!
I’m sorry you experience was so stressful, but the end result is lovely (no matter how off colored) and the Calligraphy is GORGEOUS! I love that you incorporated her Calligraphy in your letterpressed invites :)

I think that your invitations are lovely. I love letterpress, but couldn’t justify the price. We’re having our invitations printed by the same printer that Ms. Sunshine used (Bree at Sanskripts) and having a custom painting across as the heading (provided our friends ever finish it, ahem.)

But most importantly, I love the name Margot.

They’re lovely. I’m sorry that you had issues with your vendor. We’re actually using the same people, PM me if you would like to talk about it, and from our STD’s everything has turned out so far so good.

These are absolutely GORGEOUS. You did an amazing job of coordinating everything - they are really like nothing I have ever seen - and I extensively researched invites! I think it was worth it in the end for such a wonderful end product!!

They look vibrant and pretty, Miss B. I don’t think anyone will notice, especially since the flourishes of the font and calligraphy are so impressive. However, I’m sorry you had such a tough time with that vendor! Grr!

I adore letterpress! I invested about $240 in a letterpress class and will be pressing my own suite of invitations, just as soon as I get myself competent enough on adobe illustrator to pull together a design! I’m not sure how complex it will be though… perhaps just one color. We’ll see!

In other news, I LOVE your envelope liners! Did you do those yourself or did they come as part of your invitations? everything looks awesome.

Oooh love them! And even though you know about all the stress that went into them and are critical of little mistakes, I’m sure your guests have no clue!

Where did you get the inspiration for those flowers from? I could swear I’ve seen them in another invite I’ve come across on the web, but I don’t remember where! Any other readers see them or know where I could find a similar flower?

@JJ: We’ll be using color coding — and a fun DIY surprise I’ll blog about soon!

@suzanne1880: Not that I know of, but you could always work with Fran (of Little Flower Calligraphy on Etsy) for a few words to add to a card or project.

@guest: Oh wow. I didn’t even notice that until you said something. I was so focused on the END of the word that I didn’t notice the small error at the front of it — oh well!

@kathleen: Since I couldn’t find a purple patterned paper that matched what I had in mind, our designer created them following my specifications.

@Ellie: I honestly don’t remember — I think it’s actually a peony image, if that helps in your search. Ironic, because we’re not having a single peony in the wedding!

Whoa. Those are fantastic. Your guests must feel so special!

We also got letterpressed invites, but they are only a one-color press, and that one color is grey, so ours aren’t as eye-catching as yours. :-) I like the liners. And that calligraphy is amazing.

FWIW, we used Studio on Fire and I couldn’t be happier. I also made a small mistake, which is on the reception card. My bad. I am hoping no one will really notice.

wow. these are so gorgeous. I am totally inspired by these! Sorry that you’ve had some trouble with the designers but think of it this way - guests won’t be comparing their invites with each other, so they will never know about the shading of the colors!

I am in love with that calligraphy! And I really love your color combination. The lettering used for your names on the invitation is To Die For! Honestly, if I received this invitation suite, I’d be so smitten with it, I don’t think I’d notice the shading differences.

Yeah, I had no idea about the shading differences. And don’t worry about the spelling - seriously, I didn’t even notice and I know French! I really doubt whether any of the guests noticed, and like you said, YOU keep the response cards, not them!

I’ve been reading your posts and am so glad you posted these invites, because now I feel like I minor stalker because I realize that either you (or your future hubby, or both!!) are probably fellow Wildcats (or maybe just from the Nova area?) Either way - congrats!! I’ll be at a wedding at the same place the morning of the 22nd, based on your response date I’m sure yours is in the general vicinity, so what a small internet world we live in! Best of luck, can’t wait to see the photos of the big day - every wedding I’ve been to there has been amazing!
